Wasp pranced through the swamp cheerfully, on a mission from his sister to see if he could find any fruit for fermenting, and (while he was it) a mission from Ash to find good wood for burning. It was early for fruit, but he acquiesced nonetheless - the morning, after all, was quite pleasant: birdsong filled the air and fresh blossoms covered the trees. Wasp stopped to pick himself some flowers - he thought flowers made the best hats* - when he spied a familiar figure roaming through the swamp. "Heeeeey, Wild Sage!" Wasp called out, hurrying over - with a good deal of poise, because flower hats do not tend to stay in place otherwise - "How are you doing, man?" * or horn accessories, as kin do not wear hats, per se.

Sage was moving a with a little less cheer and pep, but he perked up when he heard his friend hail him. "Hey, Wasp! Not doing too badly," he said with a smile, and that was mostly true. He was only losing a little sleep, after all. "What're you up to today - gathering nectar?" he added with a snort, nodding at the acha's flowery adornments.

Wasp tossed his head, sending flowers flying everywhere. "Well, not exactly, but I am supposed to be finding some fruit or some firewood." He looked down at the scattered flowers and frowned. "Though since you mention it, I bet nectar goes well with fermented fruity drinks, don't you think?" Wasp scooped the flowers back onto his head and stood up cheerfully. "And what are you out here for, huh?"

"Just kinda wandering," Sage said with a gentle head-shake of his own. "Isn't it a little early for fruit?
"I don't know if I've ever had a fermented drink," Sage added thoughtfully, "but nectar makes everything better. You'd have to get a couple really big flowers, though, or else a whole lot of the littler ones." His ears flicked, and he corrected himself, "We'd have to - think I'll tag along with you today, if that's alright?"

"The more the merrier," Wasp said, and laughed. "If you stick around, I'm sure I can rustle up a fermented drink or two when I get home again. If my sister hasn't drank the last of it, anyway. You're in for a treat." He started poking around in bushes and nudging at fallen logs. The winter rains had rendered most of the wood unusable. "How are all those little animals doing?"

As he cast around for anything useful, Sage nodded slightly and said, "Sounds promising," even though he didn't really know that much about the drink in question. It was apparently pretty popular though, and he'd heard a few interesting accounts.
Sage's ear twitched. "Well, the little mouse was too little," he said somberly, "but the other two are fine. Songbird's sleeping back home, but the mouse -"
Sage's ear twitched again, and a tiny face peeked out from his small, but dense tuft of hair, and then proceeded to step carefully down onto his nose.
"- likes to ride on my head," he said, slowly, carefully, afraid to dislodge his tiny passenger. "I think when it gets warmer, I might be able to get it to stay on my shoulders."

Wasp peered up at the mouse and giggled. "Good to hear that two of them made it." He nibbled at some berries on a bush and frowned. "It's far too early for any good fermenting, methinks. Perhaps we should focus on finding some dry wood instead." He gestured towards a thick copse of trees. "Over there looks pretty good!"

"Alright," Sage said, and carefully tilted his head back to encourage the mouse back into his hair. That done, he followed Wasp's lead to the stand of trees and bent to the task before him. He shuffled through the underbrush with his hooves low, turning over leaf litter and gently tapping any likely bits of timber.
After a fair bit of scraping, but only a few branches collected, he thought he heard a different tone in the ubiquitous birdsong. He swung his head towards it, ears forward, earning a squeak of protest from his mouse. He'd half convinced himself he'd just imagined it when he heard it again - the sound of a bird in distress.
"Wasp, do you hear that?"

Wasp tilted his head and swiveled his ears. "Hear what?" Then he heard it, too--a distinct, urgent chirping. He laughed. "I hope you've got room for another bird, Sage. Let's see here." Wasp crept towards the sound, finally arriving at the crown of a downed tree. He peered into its tangled branches. "It sounds like it might be stuck in here somewhere, but damned if I know where."

Sage made a face as he walked beside Wasp. "Hey now, I can't adopt every wayward bird and mouse we find! Assuming we can find it," he grumbled, peering into the tangle of branches, "which isn't looking too easy a task. Don't think we can just wade in and start breaking branches off, might accidentally hurt it." He scratched his nose on his knee. "We should probably take opposite ends, meet in the middle."

"Sounds good to me!" Wasp wandered around to the other side of the tree and started pulling at branches. "And if you find any good firewood, don't forget I need that too!"
---
After a good thirty minutes of tugging at, breaking, and bending branches, Wasp gave a shout of surprise. "Hey, Wild Sage! I think I've found it!" In front of him was a bird's nest firmly nestled in the crook of two big tree limbs. He nudged it with a hoof and an agitated squeak issued forth. "Better be careful getting that out of there."

By the time Wasp called him, he and Sage were very close to the middle of the tree, so Sage gently weaved around the intervening branches to join him. "I see what you mean," he said quietly as he examined the nest. Slowly, gently, he pulled the nest and bird out onto what was now the top side of one of the branches, and leaned back to get a better look at it. It didn't look good.
"One of its wings are broken," Sage told his friend. "Do you think Never Idle could set it?"

Wasp considered. He wasn't terribly acquainted with Never Idle, but what he had seen of the old kin's work quite impressed him; his very mother had a fine example in the form of a mask made out of a skull. He nodded. "Never Idle would have a better chance of setting it than we do, at any rate. I doubt it will ever fly, though. I'll go find some stuff to bring him." Wasp gathered up some straight-looking sticks, leaves, and vines, and kicked at the pile of firewood he had collected. They'd have to come back for it.

Sage nodded and helped load up Wasp. When he couldn't put it off any longer, he gingerly lifted the bird's nest. Predictably, the bird started freaking out about being picked up by some large, strange animal, but it subsided quickly - it just didn't have the energy for those kinds of antics. Sage lead the way at as brisk a pace as he could without dislodging the poor thing - the less time the bird spent being carried, the better off it'd be.
