[Your nosy poking around has disturbed an angry old mare, who chases you off her land. You escape without incident.]

Normally Teary kept to himself, wandering alone and finding trouble at his own prompting. But today... today he was feeling surprisingly helpful. And since Never Idle was so busy with his project, the other kin wouldn't be hounding Teary's every hoofstep as he searched for the required items. All in all, a simple way to pass some time, maybe even a few days' worth if there was any trouble, not that he expected there to be much.

Though, coming nose to nose with an angry mare--well, that wasn't too pleasant. Strong legs pounded across the swamp's turf to evade her well-aimed horns, and thankfully for him she didn't see fit to chase him too far. Really, it had only been an accident!

Back to his searching, though.

[Oh no! Your digging has unearthed an incredibly angry stoat! Best to scram--and spend the rest of the day nursing your gnawed-on ankles. Try again tomorrow.]

Great--he'd been digging for clay, ever so innocently, at least until his hoofs broke through into a burrow, belonging to a particularly furious little creature--a weasel, a stoat? Whatever it was, it was screaming mad, latching onto his hocks with a surprisingly painful bite that startled a cry from him before he reared, whirling on hind legs and using a harried trot to escaped the little fiend. Well that was a painful way to end the day; he applied some cool mud to his poor ankles, curling up in a soft patch of grass. Tomorrow he could actually get some work done, for sure.

Teary could only blink in befuddlement when he came across the other buck in his odd behavior--picking up small rocks, with cheeks stuffed full to indicate there were already a great number of them hidden in his mouth. Trees That Sing was certainly an odd one alright, and the white buck could only shake his head and sigh, which happened to catch Trees' attention. Finding a spot that he deemed safe for his precious collection, he quickly spat out the pebbles he'd accrued so far and turned to give Teary a friendly snort, tail flicking. "What brings you around here? I just found the nicest pebbles if you want to look at them."

"Doing work for Never Idle," came Teary's curt response, though his eyes did wander to the pile of pebbles. Maybe something he needed would be hiding in that pile? It never hurt to check. Idle chatter from Trees passed in one ear and out the other as Teary busied himself with the pebbles, but it was a disappointment in the end. Shaking his head, the buck left Trees to his pebbles and moved on.

[You hear Never Idle chiding you in a strangely metallic voice: "Work faster! Work faster!" But then you realize it's only a mocking-raven, who must have grown up near the stag's place of business.]

He'd thought Never Idle would stick to his work, not follow him about to scold him for being slow--but as the buck turned to retort in irritation, he found no other kin nearby, yet the voice continued. What the...? Ah--there was the source, a mocking-raven. Snorting loudly, the buck stomped and made to charge at the bird until it flew away, then shook his head and marched on.

[You stumble on a friend and get distracted talking.]

It was like everywhere he turned he kept running into someone--before it had been Trees, and now it was a dainty looking Acha, an unfamiliar face that nevertheless managed to distract him from his pursuits as she shyly asked for directions. The desert cousins to the Kimeti were certainly odd... but she was still kind of cute. So the buck spent a short while helping her out, and when she had clearly found her bearings again he turn to get back to his work, a soft sigh of relief escaping him. Too many distractions, and he still hadn't found a single item for Never Idle...

[A beautiful red bird has met an unfortunate end here. Success!]

Just when he was thinking of taking a nice long break, mostly to regain any sort of hope that he might find the requested items, a flash of crimson on the ground caught his eye--aha! Dead for some time, but there were still plenty of feathers, and the buck quickly gathered them up, returning to Never Idle's workplace to drop off his prize.

[A smooth, sunbleached lynx skull lies in a clearing.]

White like him, the skull caught his eye. A curious sniff told him it had been this way for quite some time, and a small toss of his head was the only indication of his interest in the skull before he continued walking.

[You hear the sound of wings startled up when you enter this clearing, but there is no bird to be seen--only a strange shift in the light, as though a thin cloud had passed over the sun although the sky is clear.]

For a moment he was disappointed by the sound, thinking he had scared off another potential source of feathers--but a glance about showed no bird, even as the fur on his tail prickled at the eerie shifting in light. A spirit? He was no spiritual buck, but it was definitely time to move on.

[You traipse through a patch of leaves you've never seen before, and within minutes you are itchy to the knees. The itching will persist for three days, but for now on the first day it's too intense to allow focus and you feel the need for an immediate plunge into cool water. Try again tomorrow.]

White fur meant sensitive skin, doubly so when he was a fool who forgot to watch his steps. Ow, ow, ow! The buck staggered into the nearest source of water, legs twitching and stomping in itching, painful steps that brought no relief. How was he going to find anything like this? The rest of Never Idle's items would have to wait until tomorrow. Teary was starting to think the swamp had something against his legs--first that nasty little stoat, and now this. Talk about miserable....

[You find a marvelously-intact shed snakeskin.]

It was the first find of the day, and while it was certainly a novelty, it had little use for whatever it was Never Idle was up to. A few quick sniffs that rattled it against the ground, and Teary quickly moved on.

[A wonderfully lovely conch shell is nestled in the grass. It is strange to see this so far inland...]

Oddly large, and even more oddly shaped--was that supposed to be a shell? He could hardly believe it, but there it sat amidst the grass, with nothing to explain its presence or existence in the least. A small shiver went down his spine; best to leave it alone, in case someone had left it there to retrieve later. Teary gave his tail a flick and moved on quickly.

[A smooth, sunbleached lynx skull lies in a clearing.]

He'd been through here before, hadn't he? He recognized that lynx skull, and despite the need to keep moving he paused to sniff at it the same as the first encounter, glancing around in case someone had placed it here on purpose to draw attention. But there were no signs of other kin, and Teary just shook his head as he left the clearing.

[You find an ideal log. Unfortunately, rolling it free of the bracken it's trapped in and getting it back to the construction site will require some assistance! Help required. Success!]

Finally, something of use! The white buck immediately threw himself into trying to get the log out of its resting place, grunting and straining with every inch of muscle. But the damned thing barely moved after all his pushing... what an irritant, knowing he would actually have to find help to get it to Never Idle. A low grumble, and the buck instead began to look for someone who could be bothered to assist him, keeping the log's location in mind.

The help he ended up bringing back was bafflingly enthusiastic about the task at hoof, but then, he was something of an expert at moving ridiculously heavy things with friends for ambiguous reasons. This was just another average day for Wherewithal.

"If we can get a rock under it near where it's snagged, we should be able to heave it out easily," he said, casting about for a rock to satisfy part one of his plan. "Then it's just a matter of rolling it where it's gotta go."

Kitty Sprightt

While the orange buck he'd enlisted to help with the problem was strangely excited to be moving such a heavy, Teary was... not so excited. Honestly, he would've rather moved it himself if it weren't for the position it was stuck in, but as it was he would have to live with having some help for the time being. Stoic as always, the white buck allowed the other to give directions that he followed with reluctance, and the two found an appropriate rock for the maneuver Wherewithal had suggested. It was difficult to do, but with the brute strength of two bucks they got the stone in place, then began the arduous task of moving the log from where it was stuck. The wood gave a long, low groan as the undergrowth finally gave up its prize--Teary looked faintly relieved that the first and more difficult half of their task was handled. Now all they would have to do was roll it to Never Idle's work site.
