Click to show.Imperial Ink stood at the door of the lighthouse as the rain ran down his hair like tiny waterfalls and his fur became soaked down to the skin. He lifted his hoof and banged it against the door again, starting to fear that whoever was inside the building might be mistaking his knocking for thunder.

He sighed and continued to knock, Eventually, the lighthouse keeper should be able to hear him beating at the door. Maybe, hopefully.

User Image "What the dickens is that noise?" Cast Aweigh said to herself, hurrying down with a hurricane lantern in tow. It was a terrible spring storm, one that surely no one in their right mind should be out in!

She looked down the steps to see a shadow at the door's porthole.

"Good heavens!" she exclaimed and ran down to open it.

Ink stared down at the small seafoam and white unicorn that had, thankfully, opened up the door. He was taken aback, he had expected, well, an adult at any length.

A crack of lightning and a rumble of thunder reminded Ink of his environment.

"Ahh excusez-moi," he yelled over the noise of the storm. "I uh..I got caught in ze ztorm and ze lightening iz making it too hazardis to get back into ze town. Can I.." he jumped from another bolt of sky electricity. "Can I juzt ztand inzide until it pazzez?"

"Nonsense, I'm not going to let you stand out here and catch your death," Cast shook her head. "I insist you come up to the top, dry off, and have something hot."

Cast Aweigh opened the door and stepped aside to let him in.

"I don't have anything like a weather radar," she said. "But you can tell just by looking this is going to be a rough storm. High tide sometimes comes all the way up to the door around here, I wouldn't want you washed away!"

Ink scooped up a small brown item from under him and dashed into the door as quickly as he could. Standing just inside the door, he sighed, glad to be out of the weather.

"Merci beaucoup petite princesse." he said, setting the item, which now looks to be a brown book, on a nearby surface. He is so saturated with water, the hair tie he had been wearing slicked off ages ago and his long hair hung in purple and custard curtains around his face and shoulders. His purple fur sagged with water. "I uh..apologize for dripping on ze floor. When I get drier I zhall mop it up."

"Don't be silly, of course you're going to be dripping," Cast laughed at him, pulling open a foot locker and handing him an enormous Turkish towel. "And to think I've finally got a use for these! I just use one towel for myself and fill a large wooden wash tub for a soak. Would you like a soak, Mister uh... Where are my manners? I'm Cast Aweigh! This is my lighthouse!"

Ink took the towel, thanking the filly again and wrapped himself up in it as he started to wring out his hair. "Oh, I'm Imperial Ink, but juzt call me Ink." he said, gathering his mane into a large clump and twisting out small showers of water.

"Ah no, I zink I 'ave 'ad enough of a zoaking for now.." he chuckled, slowly starting to feel better. "Ze ztorm came in zo fazt, I mean, I 'ad 'eard zat zey can do zat but to zee it iz another zing all together."

Looking around for the first time, Ink was captivated. He'd never been inside a lighthouse before. "Yourz? Wiz your parentz?" Oh, right parents. Ink peeked at Cast Aweigh from under the towel as he dried his mane. "Are you zure zey won't mind if I ztay 'ere till ze weathzer clearz?"

"If my mom were here, she'd do the same thing and insist you stay until all was safe. One swift wave can come, out this far, and just drag you out to sea! My mom captains a cargo vessel and I captain this lighthouse to make sure ships come in safely. Every night, I light the lamp and make sure it stays running."

She bolted the door behind them to make sure the wind didn't push it open again.

"It's my job to help the lost," Cast explained. "I'm the last light in the fog and the rain. Which reminds me..."

She pulled down a large lever and the light that was placed above the door came on with a buzz.

"I don't usually turn on the door light because most people don't come out this far in weather like this. Once I figure out how to do some proper wiring, though, I'm going to set this light on a timer. I can't do it right now, though, I'm trying to finish my schooling."

"Your 'ere by yourzelf?" it was a mix of admiration and concern. "No one comez to zee you? What about your mothzer? How do you zchool out 'ere??" The spot was fairly vacant, Ink himself only found the lighthouse because he'd passed by it as he was out sightseeing.

Fairly dry now but looking rather ragged and crinkled due to being soaked in rain and salt water, Ink hung the towel up on a coat hook so it could dry and looked down at the tiny lake he'd created on her floor. "Really, I inzizt you get me ze mop and I can clean zis up in ze very leazt.." His stomach growled loudly and Ink looked away a bit embarrassed. "Or 'ow ever elze I can 'elp you while I intrude, it waz good of you to let me in in ze firzt plaze."

"Well, don't bother trying to mop anything until the storm stops," Cast laughed. "Water will come seeping uder the door, anyway. There's a drain in this lower floor for a reason. Everything on this floor is in a tight box or up on freight palettes. I've got all manner of canned, dried, and herb food upstairs. Why don't we have some tea and I'll put a stew on!"

Cast motioned for him to follow her up the stairs to where her "room" was. She had a hammock placed next to a wrought iron wood stove.

Looking at the puddle at his feet and frowning a little, Ink picked up his book and shrugged a bit. If she wasn't concerned, he wasn't going to press the matter. Following her up, Ink craned his neck this way and that, looking at everything, after all it wasn't every day you were inside a lighthouse.

In her "room", Ink sort of settled into a corner near the stove. He hadn't realized how cold he was until the heat hit him. He put the book also near the stove, setting up up and opening it so it stood the spine and cover edges. Ink felt a little silly, this filly taking care of his like his mother would when HE was the adult in the room.

"Are you by yourzelf a lot? Don't you get lonely?" he asked, watching her busy herself on his behalf.

"Yeah, it gets lonely, but what choice have you got sometimes?" Cast shrugged. "Someone has to control the lighthouse! It's a time honored duty, when my mom arrived here no one was working it. So she refurbished and refit it so she could ensure that everyone who comes to port will have safe passage."

Cast put more wood in the stove before putting on a copper kettle of water.

"I've got all manner of dry goods," Cast opened the door that led into a pantry. "What would you like to eat?"

"Oh, nothzing fanzy. Uh, juzt whatever you would make for yourzelf. You've already gone zrough so much trouble." He gazed around himself. "Your mothzer did all zis? Zhe zeemz like a very ztrong mare, I zee where you get it from."

Ink winced as thunder boombed and it seemed to make the whole building shake. "Well..anyone who iz zaved by you iz lucky..out on ze zea or out in ze rain." The stallion knocked his book over next it him, it was a little warm from drying out and stood up. "Iz there anyzing I can do to azzizt you?"

"You can help us both and get warmed up!" Cast laughed. "You just brought a book out all this way? No hat, no satchel, no light? I'll have to remedy that, I think."

Cast Aweigh sat by the stove and watched the kettle slowly spit out wisps of steam. She already had two ceramic mugs, some loose green tea, evaporated milk, and sugar.

"Yes, my momma refurbished a lot if it. She didn't build the whole thing, but it was in pretty bad neglect when she found it. When I was old enough, my mother Knots taught me how to run the lighthouse. She asked me if I wanted to attend a boarding school or work here and I picked here! Anyone can go to boarding school and live a regular old life, but not everyone can live in a grand old lighthouse with the sea and the stars as your family."

Ink flushed a little at being admonished by Cast Aweigh. "Well I didn't zink I'd nee a 'at or light becauze I didn't plan on bezing 'ere when it waz dark. And I 'ad a bag but it got wazhed out wiz ze firzt big wave zat hit ze beach. Zis book waz only ze real valuable zing I 'ad zo zat iz what I zaved."

As Ink flicked through the pages of his book, drawings could be seen inside. Shells, waves, anchors, boats, even the lighthouse all stylized with empty scrolls and ribbons or decorated with elaborate scrolling. Touching around his ear, he finds the pencil he'd tucked back there before the rain came down somehow still there. As Cast talked about her life, Ink began to block out a new sketch in his book.

"I zupozze zo. I could not do it, I like ze company myzelf, zo I too never went to boarding zchool, juzt regular zchool wiz Mizz Glory.."
