It had all started with Twitter.
Quote: Hanna Nowicki @hannawicki Must hit something. Who's in for a trip to the training ground? #theworldisalie
Quote: Camixi Ryland @ninespride @hannawicki You're welcome to try and hit me. Do us both good to feel terrafirma under our butts. (Gonna put you on yours, haha!)
Quote: Hanna Nowicki @hannawicki @ninespride Cool -- I'll be the girl with facial tattoos smacking dummies with a twin blade. Hopefully that is specific enough. Hopefully.
Hanna made good on her promise. When the freshly hatched Sun trainee arrived to the training grounds, the redheaded Death Hunter was whacking and thwacking away with her twin blade, charging and diffusing the Lady like it was her job.
Which, well, it was.
Being away for 2.5 years had been tough, but coming back was not exactly easy. Less than 48 hours breathing non-regulated air. And the Island was already messing with her. She felt embarrassed as she sorted out her real experiences from the fake ones Alice had forced upon her. There was a creeping paranoia that none of this was really over. She found herself second guessing every single thing that happened to her, and it was not exactly healthy for a girl who already had a tendency to over think things.
So what was any girl to do but beat the s**t out of things?
Sure, the girls had exchanged pleasantries. Hi, I'm Hanna. Oh, I'm Cami. You're a Sun? Yep -- Death? Sure am. Cool. Cool. Then the hitting of things had commenced.
Normally, Hanna would have made nice a lot more, attempted to uncover this new girl's "story" or something. But since everything felt like a lie, she didn't feel like investing time into a memory that might not even be true. The girls traded off side by side strikes on the dummies littered in front of them.
After maybe half an hour of work, Hanna stopped and turned to face the other girl. "Do you want to make this more interesting?" she said quickly, her voice filled with more intensity than it normally was.
It was maybe not the best first impression.

Connections. That's what Camixi needed and she needed them relatively quickly. The fact that there seemed to be an omniscient voice in her head, reading her thoughts, knowing the reasons she did the things she did before finding fault with them? It was perhaps worse than being in a dark, crowded room. Dark was bad but crowded was alright, lots of bodies to keep the Bad Things that Went Bump (BTWB) away. Having been directed to the dank, dark, horrifying place she was expected to live? Kidana wasn't so bad.
Nonetheless it would be nice to have living, breathing, relatively human connections as well. Maybe one that knew how to get out of the dungeon that they considered a basement, away from the odd noises and darkness of those awful rooms. Mixi wasn't usually the sort of woman that enjoyed beating the crap out of things. Responding to the Tweet had been a characteristic impulse; she'd been expecting to meet Peyton by now. It seemed that things on the island weren't quite...right at the moment.
There was a very real possibility the island wasn't real at all. Strange dreams had chased the redhead since she'd emerged from the strange pod. Bix, who'd been an amazing person to have at her side when coming into this odd world, hadn't been found again yet either. Being out in the afternoon sun, beating something (or someone) up? Better than nothing.
Unlike Hanna, who seemed rather nice and normal (a huge relief), Cami was standing back as far as she thought she could manage. Arrow after arrow was fired towards the dummies and only a few stuck. Screwing up her nose a bit the historian was not all that pleased. Hanna's suggestion incurred a bit of trepidation yet how else to make friends? Reason said that if she got beat up and sent to whatever this place considered a nurse or doctor she might make yet another friend!
It wasn't great reasoning. Someone else had gotten all of that gift in her bloodline. "You mean something more like you chasing me around the yard while I try to get a shot off?"

Now that she had said it aloud, Hanna had her heart set on it. She had been sparring with dummies and conditioning all this time (not that it was much time). She had yet to actually wield The lady at a moving, breathing target. She hardly counted the cobwebs that trapped her in Alice's dreamspace. The calluses on her palms had softened during stasis. What better way to earn them back than with an actual battle?
"You can do better than that, I'm sure," Hanna said, dislodging the Lady from the neck of the training dummy. Splinters of wood fluttered free. "The day I woke up -- well, minutes actually after I woke up -- the whole group of us was taken immediately on a mission. No time like the present to up the ante, you know?"
Or to get her fire back, whatever that meant. She missed the Hanna who had walked out of the pod after the Island Trials. That girl had a purpose. That girl knew how to exist in this place. No more shaky knees. She was a goddamn Death Hunter.
Hanna knew Cami was a fairly new hunter. She hadn't bothered to find out how new. If she had, she probably wouldn't be so gung-ho about this idea. OH WELL. She could decide whether or not to feel bad about it later.
Giving a few more feet of space between them, Hanna tossed the Lady to her other hand. It wasn't as smooth as she saw it in her mind. Her thumb hit the handle grips hard. Whoops. Cami wasn't the only rusty one here. "Any space out here is fair game. We'll just agree to stop short on strikes," she said, nodding along with her words.

Eyebrows raised a bit at the idea of stopping short with a bow and arrow. Kidana had jagged edges that could be used to fend off Hanna's weapon, whatever his or her name was, if she accidentally got too close. Hanna would be defenseless if somehow Cami didn't miss. It seemed chancy. Blue eyes lingered on the training dummy as she counted the arrows sticking out. Two. She was making less than ten percent of her shots which was...< Sloppy? Shameful? > Yes, all of that. Though who expected her to be able to be a crack shot on day one?
Kidana.
Putting her bow down for a moment the redhead coiled her hair up into a nest atop her skull, viciously snapping the band around to hold it in place. Slapping her partner in the face with all that heavy hair was going to be worse than if she actually punched her in the face. Nobody liked eating hair especially if it wasn't their own.
Looking at the distance between the two of them had Mixi moving back a bit further. Ten large paces separated the two of them, dummies forgotten. Eyes narrowed between them waiting to see who would make the first move, who would flinch. Each breath she drew in was deep, focused, lips moving but no words coming out as facts and dates streamed through her mind. As far as concentration tactics went they were a little odd but very effective.
Unfortunately too effective. Drawing her bow in a smooth motion that felt more the effect of the spirit housed inside of it Camixi loosed an arrow that, had it really connected, would have buried itself deeply into Hanna's shoulder. Considering she'd been aiming for a spot two inches away? Disastrous. Instead, a light the same color as the runes on Hanna's weapon deflected it off like...like a ********>

Hanna tested the balance in her twinblade. It was currently locked as one long weapon. She fingered the locking mechanism that could separate it, but opted to start out unified. It was her preferred way to fight, more leverage that way. She had been so busy surveying The Lady that she didn't pay attention to what Cami was doing. Her eyes widened -- first, in surprise, and then, frustration.
She had asked for this duel, and now she was on the receiving end of the first blow. Not cool. Hanna, dear, I know I said that we would do great things together three years ago... but could you please remind me why I thought that was a good idea? A derision etched Adelphe's voice in Hanna's mind. The same derision that she was full of ever since Hanna woke back up.
Narrowing her eyes, Hanna drew The Lady behind her and charged for Cami, swinging the hooked blade in a sharp uppercut across the other girl's torso. She quickly banked to her left side, readying herself for another blow. "Like riding a bike," she murmured, sort of to Cami? Who knew.

Camixi wasn't the kind of person who stammered yet there she was, watching as Hanna's eyes narrowed in an expression that was 110% serious, words refusing to make any sense of themselves. That part of her brain that had long been prey, afraid of everything around her, was telling the young woman to run. But it was drowned out by the part of her brain where Kidana had apparently taken up residence, shouting at her. < Block the attack! Don't you DARE run. You're Sun Division now and you best act like it. Deflect the attack and slash back. I'm sharp enough at the point. Stab. Shoot. Do not RUN. >
Luckily for the revenant, Mixi had always responded rather faithfully to her inner voices. Without even thinking she tried to stand her ground, tried to deflect, but was clumsy with both her earlier stammering mishap. A blade raked across the shield that covered her, pain radiating across her chest as if it she'd actually been slashed. Thankful that her innards were not suddenly her outards the redhead sprang into action.
Hanna's guard was up but that didn't mean her legs were steady, the bow sweeping out in an arc to try and put the Death trainee onto her a**.

The success of a good blow brought a wash of relief over Hanna. Her stance was rusty, her swings not nearly as precise as they had been before, but she was feeling good about herself. So, there was that.
Keep moving, she has to aim that thing, the Lady barked.
As she moved around Cami's left side, Hanna took a stiff step back to avoid the swipe of the bow. It barely touched her. In response, Hanna tried to shove out the bar of her weapon to knock the other girl backward, but her footing was wrong and she stumbled, quickly twirling out of swiping distance.
Well... that was certainly less impressive.
"It's slippery there," she said, with a laugh.
