User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Kaiju Blue was on an excursion; a long patrol, if you would. The little pegasus was getting bigger, and by his estimation he was big enough to take on solo patrols on the hunt for the monsters which he just knew lurked in the ocean. He had his Pan Phonyland Defense Corps saddlebags stuffed with towels, goggles, granola bars, and all the things a phony would need for a long trip on foot and wing. He was going all the way out to the lighthouse, which was at least a whole day's trip, and you never knew what you could find out there. It would be the perfect place for a monster attack- and well, you never knew when a radioactive reptile would rear its head. But he had to be ready until he could come up with a predictive model for kaiju attacks, and so today he'd go out and survey the lighthouse. He had to admit the point was pretty nice. Lots of rocks and sand- and quite quiet. It was much further away than the regular public beach, and the roar of the ocean was peaceful. It was lulling him into a false sense of security- why, at any moment, those waves could bring forth a bioluminescent behemoth with an appetite for phonies. Adjusting his saddlebags, the dark purple colt lifted off, salty spray in his face and mist in his wings. He scanned the waves, making sure everything was safe, and listened for the telltale sounds of a monster attack. Sounds like roars... or screams.

User Image Cast Aweigh was out along the shore while there was still daylight enough to see the sparkling shells and fresh driftwood being pushed in by the waves. She smelled of coconut and pineapples, her sunscreen of choice, decked with a glob of it over her nose and a large sun hat completely littered in colorful hibiscus print. She would have worn flip flops if she thought they'd stay on her hooves.

Wicker basket in hand, she had collected quite a few driftwood pieces already when she spied on that looked for all the world like a sea serpent covered in green slime!

Her curiosity got the best of her, for she set down her hat and basket to swim out towards it. It didn't take long for her to become entangled and calling for help!

The shouts pierced the air, ringing in his ears. Something horrible was in the water- he knew there might be an attack here! And from the sound of it, there was a victim still alive! He had to get to them as soon as possible. He sloughed off his saddlebags and climbed through the air as high as he could get- not quite as high as an adult, but from his perception, high enough.

Let's see now. Serpentine form, pretty big. Big enough that I can take it myself? Gonna have to try. Looks like an attack of opportunity- I don't see drag marks, so they were probably swimming and it surfaced. He flew out over the water in what he'd dubbed the falcon formation; pulling his wings in tight, he went in for the dive. He didn't want to hit the unicorn filly, so he aimed for the water near what he figured was probably the thing's head. Surfacing, he shook his head to get the water out of his eyes. "Ma'am! Shout if you can hear me! I'm with the Pan Phonyland Defense Corps, and I'm here to help!"

"Yes, help!! I can swim, but..." She slapped the water hard to keep herself afloat, but the sand was rolling the driftwood slowly sidelong and pulling her foot down as it was entangled in seaweed. "Help, quick!"

Had she known it was going to be his dangerous, she'd've thought to have packed her travel knife... or scuba gear!

"Don't worry, ma'am!" the pegasus shouted as he paddled around the monster. "My name is Kaiju Blue, and the first thing we have to do is extricate you from the monster. Take a deep breath and keep your head above the water! I'll do the rest!" His wings were clamped tightly to his back as he dove down at the monster's head, kicking at its body while jabbing it with his forehooves. A one and a two...

The sea monster's body was thin- and slippery! He mentally classified it as an eel-type... possibly a krait-type or some other kind of snake. Either way, it was much better than a cephalopod. Not so many arms to deal with- and fewer teeth than a reptile or shark-type, too!

"I'm..." Cast Aweigh took a few gulps of air. "I'm trying!"

Of all the things going in on Cast's mind it was first and foremost on the idea that if he mom ever found out, she'd kill her. Though, that was most likely an exaggeration. Mostly.

Great, the first time in a while she'd had time to gather things for her art pieces and she was stuck. But at least she had help! Handsome and brave, too. She'd be making doe eyes at him if they weren't being drowned in salt water.

"You're doing great! Just concentrate on you- I'll get this beast!" Kaiju yelled, diving below the waves again. He was aware of the filly's presence in the water; her warmth and vitality, compared to the clamminess of the monster- and her fighting against the waves. The monster moved with them- and that was what he must do to defeat it! Twisting and turning under the water, the pegasus lashed out, trying to gather the monster around him. If he caught it on his terms, he could drag it to shallower water without risking the girl. This would work! It had to! He deftly wrapped a bit of its length around a forehoof and shuddered at its touch. This monster was incredibly thin- and incredibly slimy! As he tugged, piece of it popped off in his hooves. So it can be hurt... Hm. If it was as fragile as all this, it might be best to head for shallow water sooner rather than later. He didn't want it splitting and taking the girl with it, pulling her down to the depths! Slowly but surely, he pulled both of them- monster and maiden- into shallower water.

"What b-b..?" Honestly, what beast? Was something else here, she wondered? She could only sink and rise over and over like a fishing bob as Kaiju worked to free her.

She was slowly losing strength. Realizing it'd be best to hold her breath and do a float, she stopped paddling so hard and went up for air. She let her eyes adjust and she looked to see where Kaiju was.

Wow, could he swim! Even with wings!

As Kaiju floated them to a sandbar, he managed to get a better chokehold on the monster. The girl was floating now, which was great- the less she struggled, the more he could work on getting her free and slaying the monster, which was... spooling... really well... into his hooves. He bit at it, afraid that once again he'd taste the salty, oh-so-familiar... yup.

Not again.

Seaweed.

This was seaweed.

He'd just rescued a girl from a monster and it was seaweed.

How embarrassing! Kaiju wanted to go under the water and just stay there forever. Instead, he stood there, seaweed in his hair and mouth, head sticking out of the water, feet planted firmly on the sandbar.

The moment she felt her foot get free, she pulled her head upwards for air. She paddled towards the shore and shook off before looking around for Kaiju.

"Oh, thank you! I thought I was going to have to wait until it was-"

Cast looked at the expression on his face, and the seaweed he was decked in.

"Wow, you look just like Jenny Greenteeth," she laughed. "You wanna come out and have some hotdogs with me? My treat! I've go a spot ready made for a fire outdoors."

Kaiju blushed and stared down at the water, brushing the seaweed from his mane with a sodden hoof. "I... Ma'am, I am so sorry for alarming you without due cause. I apologize for the confusion; in my haste, I misidentified the water plant for a sea monster. But I am glad you're ok! And..." he smiled a little. "Hot dogs do sound pretty good."

"You call someone's mom 'ma'am'," Cast laughed, pulling on her sun hat and gathering up her basket. "You can call me Cast Aweigh. I live out here! There's no harm in thinking it was a sea monster, I mean... it did seem hungry for my foot!"

Cast wrung water from her hair for a moment.

"The closest I've ever seen to anything that looked like a sea monster was an oarfish that died and washed ashore. It must've been eight feet long or more and it had looooong whiskers or something that looked like whiskers. It's no wonder people mistake things for other things when they're from the ocean. Besides, I'm certain there are really sea monsters, just not around here lately."

"Cast Aweigh it is, then!" he said with a laugh, trying to force himself into a better mood. "I was just on sea monster patrol out here- this stretch of beach is so far away from everything, I was worried that it would be a strategic location for an attack. So I thought I'd check up on everything- but it seems that this area's secure! Except from dead oarfish, which sound really amazing to see in person." It was really nice that she was being so nice. It certainly made this situation less embarrassing! "So you live out here? By yourself?" It was certainly an odd place for a little foal to live alone, if she was really alone.

She gestured for him to follow her and pointed towards a little fire pit further in from the shore line.

"I took a rubbing of it! Well, sort of a rubbing. There's this way to record fish by rolling ink on them and then pressing them against paper! I have rolls and rolls of butcher paper from a print maker. I taped some together, rolled the whole darn thing in different colors of poster paint, and slapped it onto the sheets!" she clapped her hooves together like she was catching an invisible fly.

"My mom tells me stories of things unseen beneath the waves. She sends me mail via a postman who travels by air on a plane with floating feet. I have to stay and mind the lighthouse. It must be lit every night or if it's too foggy to see."

"So you help keep the oceans safe, too!" Kaiju said, rubbing his hooves together to dry them. "That's admirable! Lighthouses are important for maritime safety. Is your mother a sailor, then? If she's not here with you? It must be tough, keeping a lighthouse by yourself. But it's such an important job- you're so brave to do it!" He slid a hotdog onto the end of a stick and held it over the fire. "So does that mean you don't go to school? Is it lonely out here on the coast by yourself?"
