User Image Cast Aweigh had been hard at work with latex gloves (on horse feet), a sponge, a squeegee, and a bucket of soapy water. It had taken her several days to clean the glass on the light house's storm panes.

Wearing an old bucket hat and a canvas smock, she scrubbed away at the last two panes before she could work her way down to the port holes.

It had taken him all day to find the spot. Searching high and low, near and far, for what might be the perfect hiding place had led him here. It wasn't too bad, May Day thought to himself, walking along the shoreline and looking up at the lighthouse. In fact, for an abandoned lighthouse, it sure looked well taken care of. Really well taken care of.

And so did that little green filly with the white hair, scrubbing the storm panes with what looked to be a heroic amount of elbow grease.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't so abandoned.

Well, it wouldn't do to be rude. She didn't look like she had any pole-like object to smack him with. And he didn't want to be a creeper...

"Hello there!" called May Day, lifting up a hoof in greeting.

Cast looked downward to see May Day, with that her bucket hat sailed down towards May Day.

"Lookout below!" she called after it, stopping what she was doing to go down towards him. "It's just my hat, don't worry!"

She set the gloves and water bucket aside to go down and greet company. COMPANY! She hadn't had any visitors in weeks, it seemed, other than the very brief visit from the postman.

She opened the door below. When she was older, she thought, she'd build a proper house attached to the base of the lighthouse.

"Hm?" replied May Day, before something silver went hurtling down toward him. With a yelp, he hoofed it to the side, watching the bucket clatter and bounce as it hit the ground. He grabbed it on its second bounce before it went into the ocean, his heart pounding, his mouth suddenly dry. He turned it over -- it didn't look too damaged, just a minor dent.

Wait, did she say it was a hat?

"A-ahaha, all clear, nothing catastrophic happen down here, miss. I have your... hat..." he called as she came nearer. On closer inspection, she was as young as he was! Was she all alone out here? "My name is May Day, Miss...?"

(( Ah ha ha!! A bucket hat is one of these! But I can work with an actual bucket. XDDD!! ))

"Ahoy, there!" Cast Aweigh took off her smock for company. "I'm Cadet Cast Aweigh of the S.S. Actually A Lighthouse!" she laughed. "I haven't had company in ages! But... what're you doing out all this way? Did you get lost?"

((OMFG I am so sorry! XD;;; I am such an idiot, I even know what those are called, it just totally slipped my mind! Do you want me to go back and change it?))

May Day smiled, feeling like he should straighten his hair or his ... hooves... or something while the filly spoke. He laughed as she gave her rank.

"She's a fine actually-lighthouse, she is. And I hope you don't mind me barging in. It's nice to make your acquaintance!" he said. His smile faded a bit then, and he wet his lips, unsure of how to proceed. "Actually, I was all the way out here because I'm looking for a place to lay low. I, uhm... well, Cinco de Mayo is coming up, and that's sure to be a bad day for a guy like me, so ..." He trailed off, rubbing the back of his head with a faint laugh.

(( Nah, that was funny! XDD Cast would probably wear a bucket if she had no other option. ))

"Oh, I've got spare hammocks and a wood stove and a ton of dry goods my mom has shipped in from all over the world! I do all my schoolwork in the evening, mail it to my professors, and then light the top of the lighthouse before bed. You're welcome to hang around however long you need," Cast nodded cordially. "I haven't seen anyone my age before come here."

Cast Aweigh stopped for a moment to translate in her head. "What's so scary about the fifth of May?"

"Wow!" said May Day, his eyes rounding in surprise. "That is... really quite intense. It seems like you have a lot on your plate for being, well, a foal. Do you get lonely out here?"

He nearly bit his tongue as he finished the sentence. That wasn't polite! He'd just met this girl, and he was prying into her life and situation. Hopefully she didn't take offense!

He tried to regroup as she asked her own question.

"Cinco de Mayo..." May Day narrowed his eyes. "It is the worst of days. From sunup to sundown, children deck themselves out in bright colors and develop a lust for candy. They're supposed to be celebrating Hispanic heritage, but instead they carry around bats and mop handles and branches and beat the stuffing out of pinatas until candy comes out of them. And pinatas, well... they're phony-shaped, and they're made out of paper-pieces. Like this."

He lifted a hoof and shook it. His fetlocks waved prettily in the air.

His mouth went a little wry, smiling. "Well, if I'm honest... for everyone ELSE it's fun. But I get random smacks from kids who think I'm an extra-large candy-carrier."

"Oh, yeah, it's pretty lonesome," Cast nodded, not offended in the slightest. "I keep myself busy as best I can. I do all my homework through correspondence. It's so slow, I suppose I won't ever graduate," she laughed.

Cast thought about poor May Day's predicament for a time before piping up with an idea.

"You should wear a disguise!"

"Well, that's awful..." said May Day, his ears dropping slightly. "What about penpals? Do you have any of those?"

She didn't seem sad, but the thought of this new acquaintance being lonely still bothered May Day. She seemed like a good, hard-working, friendly filly! While she didn't seem to need any cheering up, he still wanted to put a smile on her face.

With a laugh, he picked up the nearly-forgotten bucket. "A disguise! That's a great idea. Maybe I'll use this?" He plunked the bucket over his head, all but his snout disappearing within. When he talked, there was a metallic echo.

"I could use some seaweed to cover up my mane and tail, too!"

"I've only got Professor Sandhoof, who works at a museum, to teach me schoolwork," Cast admitted. "She makes me a textbook and a stack of worksheets that I need to fill out and mail back by the end of each month."

She stopped to watch him put seaweed on his head. Caught unaware, she snorted a laugh. "All you'd do is look like old Jenny Greenteeth! People will come after you with iron frying pans and fire pokers if you wore that!"

Cast Aweigh remembered about a trunk of old sailor's clothes and costumes from all over the world her mother had sent her.

"I've got oodles of things that would work as a disguise, would you like to see them?"

"Is that it?" said May Day, shuffling a wet piece of seaweed out from between his eyes. It slid slimy-slimy down the side of his face and plopped onto the ground. Which took a bit of the gravitas away form his next offer. "Well, could I write you now and then? Only if you'd like some extra mail!"

Of course, because who didn't love extra mail?

He laughed, shaking off the rest of his seaweed disguise. "Great! I don't know who Jenny Greenteeth is, but I assume people'd still poke her with a stick on Cinco de Mayo, and that's a no-go. Let's see what you've got!"

"Nah," Cast laughed, motioning for May to come inside. "Jenny Greenteeth is a river monster. She likes to drown people who get too close to deep water. But I think she's weak to wrought iron. I imagine that would hurt way worse than any old broomstick!"

Cast led him into the lighthouse and up to the second floor where she hauled open a large costume trunk. It looked like something out of an old Vaudeville theatre with stamps from various locations and a huge, broken lock that left the box permanently unlocked.

"Every sort of costume clothing my mom sends me, I put in here! I bet it'd be fun on Halloween, but there's no where to really go trick-or-treating."

Well, she hadn't really answered whether she'd like extra letters or not, which got May Day wondering -- was she being polite in her refusal, or had she simply gotten distracted by their conversation? M-maybe he would ask again as he left...

"Wrought iron! Heaven forbid..." the colt said, shuddering, as he entered the light house. It was nicer than expected, warmer, and Cast Aweigh seemed to have some nice things! He grinned when he saw her trunk.

"Well, wow, look at that! I'm sure there'll be something great in there... You should come into town for Halloween sometime!" he exclaimed.

Cast had simply forgotten, there were so many things she wanted to show her new friend that it slipped her mind. Company was priority, in her mind.

"Oh, I can't," Cast shook her head. "Not unless I can find someone to mind the baby," she joked. "Are you familiar with theatre? Vaudeville or Hollywood?"

Cast pulled a smaller kit looking box from within the trunk. It was a wooden box decked in fading blue and white stars.
