Lemure paced back and forth on her porch, waiting for Mooncake to arrive. She was nervous. The filly had never been on a date before, she'd only read about them in books. Although, to be fair, the characters in the books she read didn't so much go on dates as they just had a lot of sex. They did other things too... mostly solve supernatural crimes, and get into huge magical fights. There really wasn't much time to date when you had to prevent a legion of evil vampires who have teamed up with a dark necromancer from destroying the city and the world!

Boring girls like her though, they had time for dates.

Since Mooncake confessed his feelings for her, Lemure was an emotional wreck. She barely ate; she couldn't sleep. It had been a long several days while she anticipated their first date.

Wanting to look her best, she "borrowed" a fancy shawl out of Taquita's closet. It was dark and had an Old World feel. It made her feel like a dramatic heroine. If Mooncake liked it, her mom was never going to get it back, and she was probably going to have to raid Taquita's clothing to see what else she could commandeer.

Unaware of Lemure's suffering, the purple flutter was a mess in his own way. The past few days had been spent agonizing over what to say. It'd gotten to the point where the stallion had just flat out made himself a pack of flash cards. Of course, given just who it was coming up with all this, all of the topics of conversation beyond the usual small talk of "what's your favorite color? And tell me about your family." were mythology related, as playing to Mooncake's strengths.

Of course, the thought hadn't even crossed his mind that when he finally arrived at her home to pick her up he would forget all of the things he had memorized. As the flutter arrived at his date's porch he could only stare at her in awe for a few moments before he began frantically searching for the right words to say.

"Hello... It's a beautiful day?" The first few things out of his mouth were far from impressive and he winced internally. Oh god, talking about the weather... She probably already thought he was boring. His panicked eyes bounced from place to place, trying to pick out something he could use as a conversation piece. "Your scarf is quite cute. It goes nicely with your eyes. It makes them pop, like... Like shimmering lakes under the moonlight." Oh god that sounded awful. Was that even a scarf? Was there a difference between draped pieces of fabric? Did she already think he was an idiot now?! He was a man of myth! Not of fashion! The stallion chuckled nervously, unaware of the fate he was dooming Lemure's mother to.

"Are you ready to go?"

When she saw Mooncake, Lemure almost melted on the spot. Her eyes sparkled as she gazed at him. Sooooooo dreamy!

His speech was jumpy, and he sounded more nervous than she was by far, but Mooncake's words themselves were suave. He was really really good at complimenting her, and she liked a stallion that was well versed in the verbiage of love.

She ignored the small talk part. The weather was a fine subject for the customers she talked to daily, but she was more interested in more important matters with Mooncake. Like the part where he admiring her. "Oh, this old thing?" Lemure said, playing it cool, "It was just something I found." In the back of my mom's closet. "I'm really glad you like it though!"

It was time for her to try use all of her charms. Lemure really was more booksmart when it came to love, but she had a lot practice flirting as a foal. She moved up closer to him, they were side by side for a moment. She could almost feel his tension. Then, she sashayed down the porch steps, emphasizing each step and sway. "I'm ready. Are you?"

It wasn't likely she could keep her composure all night, and chances were good that she would burst out screeching at some point, but for now Lemure was trying her best to be a perfect picture of class.

It was all Mooncake could do to keep his jaw from dropping as Lemure walked by. The fact that she was able to speak so cooly was no surprise to him however. He certainly didn't expect a radiant mare like herself to be the least. She was simply the most beautiful woman in phony land who had decided to give him a chance. He was the one he needed to worry about blowing it.

"Of- Of course." How at that moment he wished his whole life had been spent preparing for a situation like this rather than reading books. Learning how to romance a woman probably would have been more useful.

The stallion tossed his head, trying to shake off the nerves before he glided after the mare. Arriving at her side he looked ahead. Perhaps avoiding staring directly at her beauty would help him keep his composure. At least that was his hope. "I hope i didn't keep you waiting long or prevent you from running some important errand." Ok, that sounded good so far. There couldn't possibly be a downside to being polite. But what else to talk about?!

"I was wondering, since you're such a well-read mare, if you could suggest any good books? If i'm remembering correctly, you enjoy the supernatural as much as i do." The purple flutter smiled, hoping that she wouldn't find the question boring. "Or maybe i should ask what your favorite type of creature is instead?"

Lemure stopped dead in her tracks.

Don't tell him you read monster porn. Don't tell him you read monster porn. Don't tell him you read monster porn. Don't tell him you read monster porn.

"I read paranormal romance novels..." she admitted shyly. "They're kind of like urban fantasy books but with more... um, romance." They originally bonded by talking about different preternatural species, but she was sure that the sources he got his information from were a lot more credible than hers.

Maybe she could flirt her way out of the embarrassment, and change the subject slightly, "If you asked me what my favorite creature was, I'd say he's royal purple, with rusty orange hair. He has dark eyes that you can fall into for ages, and little wings that flutter into your heart. His magical super power is sweeping fair maidens off of their hooves."

Lemure smiled. "I don't suppose you've done any research about that one, have you?"

Lemure is so great. I can't even

"Paranormal romance novels?" The stallion's head tilted inquisitively. There were plenty of love stories out of all the myths. Someone was always falling in love with someone else and then getting smited by some jealous god. Although it was debatable how many of them were actually romantic. Given he hadn't read any actual romance novels, his closest guess to what one was like would be one of the many tales of Zeus seducing some woman only for Hera to find out and exact revenge.

Of course, the next few words out of her mouth made even less sense. Was- was she talking about him? He certainly didn't know any other flutters of the same color combinations. What made it confusing was he was absolutely certain he was terrible at flirting and completely undesirable.

Mooncake stared at Lemure in confusion, face steadily growing more and more crimson. "What?" Dumbfounded he gestured to himself with a hoof. "You couldn't be talking about... Me?"

It seemed she stumped him. She could either continue, and press the advantage, or she could wait and let him recover.

"I like the books I read because all the girls in them are always a bit different. They're either vampires, or witches, or werewolves who on top of dealing with paranormal problems, also have to just deal with life. It makes me feel better about being a...." Lemure looked down at her hooves, and consequently also the ground through them. "...ghost."

"These supernatural girls always end up with super dreamy guys, and I think you fit the bill. You're a little bit different too; not everyone in Phonyland is a flutter." Her confidence seemed to waver from where it was a moment ago. Lemure was good at flirting and being fun, but she wasn't the greatest at dealing with real emotions, and her insecurities were showing. "I just thought that I'd end up with an unrequited love interest forever."

And she waited now for him to change his mind and reject her for being to weird. Lemure didn't know when to keep her mouth shut.

The stallion was still in a daze when he received yet another shock. Lemure didn't like her ghostly attributes? "What?!" He spluttered, mouth agape. "But it's amazing that you're like that! I wish there were more people like you! It'd make phony land more interesting!" Of course, it would also be great for his studies if everyone was a freakish monster. But, he figured that was something best left out. "Did someone say something mean to you? I met a little colt with a leg made out of bread some time ago. He wasn't very confident about his appearance either! I thought it was fascinating though. I didn't even know there were pastry based beings in the first place." And he'd been working to document it pretty thoroughly since then.

"Super dreamy?" He blinked, gesturing to himself again. "I think your supernatural attributes just make you even better. I'm sure everyone else must be very jealous of you too. Doesn't every phony want to be something like a superhero at some point in their life?" Smiling shyly, the flutter flitted about her. "The only way someone as beautiful and amazing as you could end up as an old maid would be because no one else can match you."

That should cheer her up. Right?

"I never thought of it that way!" Lemure said, going back to being more upbeat again. "You're my superhero, Mooncake. You're rescuing me from my doubt." This stallion was a true wordsmith, and she hanged on every word he said. He was amazing at flattery. She could listen to him talk about how amazing she was all day.

"I only thought guys like you existed in books..."

She put her face close to his, and then paused for a moment. She knew what she wanted to do, but was she going too fast? After what felt like forever, she chickened out, and just gave him a small peck on the cheek.

The idea was to leave him wanting more, but really, it was just her making herself want more. This being coy thing was backfiring on her.

The stallion couldn't help but chuckle. It was good that she was cheerful again. "Oh no. I'm nothing like a super hero." He raised his dainty legs to show her. "These are more like wiggly noodles than strong monster fighting tools." A smile tugged at his muzzle and he closed his eyes happily. It was good she thought he was something like a charming prince at least. Way better than being thought of as some gross nerd. "I'm glad you're happy again though."

Mooncake's eyes peeked open only to find that suddenly their snouts were closer than before. Oh god, what was happening? She couldn't be, right? The stallion's body tensed as he stared at Lemure's face.

"Oh." A blush flooded the flutter's cheeks as he awkwardly stood there with a huge grin on his face. His hair might have stood on end too if he didn't keep it tied up. "Thank you?" Ok, he really wasn't sure what he was supposed to do in any situation involving kisses, on the cheek or otherwise. Thanking her probably wasn't it and the stallion tried not to panic as he fumbled for words.

"So- so that's what it's like to be blessed by a goddess." What was he supposed to do? Was he supposed to kiss her on the cheek in return or just brush it off and keep walking? The stallion bit his lip and tried to summon up courage. "Um, may i?" He leaned towards her cheek, planting a small kiss of his own.

"I like your noodle legs just as much as I like everything else about you. Some monsters are beat with brains instead of brawn too, you know."

Unsure of how to follow up Mooncake's 'thank you', Lemure simply replied, "You're welcome!" It didn't feel like the correct thing to say, but it would do for now. She'd never get tired of being compared to a goddess.

Lemure, being a tricky and clever girl, turned her head at the last moment when Mooncake went in to kiss her, and their lips touched briefly. She wanted to faint on the spot. Her little heart was so happy that she felt like she could explode.

Mooncake's eyes widened as their lips touched and he stumbled backwards. The stallion was pretty sure his face had never been more red in his life and wow, her lips were so soft and.... Nope! Stop thinking about it! A kiss on the lips was definitely too arrogant of him. Undoubtedly it'd be the act of hubris which would lead to his downfall with her. "I am so sorry. I didn't mean to overstep my bounds. I'm really just a lowly mortal who has no right to even stand near someone like you." Oh god he could feel the rambling about the acts of overconfidence which led for one to be smites by the gods.

The flutter bowed apologetically, afraid to look at her as he struggled to regain his composure. "I'd understand if you wanted to cancel our date and never talk to me again." He peeked up nervously, trying to gauge the mare's reaction. She looked... Well he wasn't quite sure if it was elation or horror, as much as he would love for her to be happy about that sort of thing. His fear that she'd hate him was currently fighting it out with his joy. He could only imagine that his apology must look insincere with the grin which was undoubtedly upon his face.

Was he smiling? But he was apologizing at the same time. Did she do something wrong? This dating thing was way more confusing than she thought it would be.

"No, no! Don't be sorry... it really was my fault. I just thought...." Now she was backpedaling too. His body language didn't match his words, so maybe it was okay?

"I liked it though." the mare said with a snarky smile, "We should do it again sometime." And by 'sometime' Lemure meant 'all day, every day, forever and ever'. "There's no way you're canceling our date that easily! What happened to you wanting to bask in the glow of your goddess?" she teased. Not only was he handsome, but he flattered her in every sentence, and liked all of the strange things about her; there was no way she was going to let him get away.

The end. <3

"You thought...?" Ohh, she liked it? Mooncake was practically beaming and couldn't help but making a small wiggle of excitement. "I- I liked it too." He rubbed his hooves together nervously. "I would like that... To kiss again sometime, i mean."

He could only imagine what his mother and brother would say if they'd found out. Undoubtedly his mother would bring up foals already and his brother would simply tease him. That was, until he brought up his brother's crush. But, with his family being such gossips they'd probably spread the news around all of phonyland!

"Oh, uh. That's good. I think i might have roamed the earth pining after you if you'd decided you hate me." An awkward chuckle escaped him and he glanced at the sky. "We should probably get back to walking though if we actually want to make it there," he chortled, wings abuzz as they walked again.
