User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Sea Whip could not in all honesty say she was getting the hang of being a mom. It wasn't that she was afraid of taking responsibility, Whip's sense of duty was unquestionable. It wasn't that she disliked babbens, she didn't mind them mostly. And it wasn't as if they were getting into all sorts of trouble, at least not trouble trouble, more of a mischief, silly trouble, which was all well and good and what young colts and fillies should get into in Whip's opinion.

It was just that, well, there seemed to be a whole new set of rules and standards when said colts and fillies were yours. And apparently all of them were self-imposed. She had taken a distinct interest in the well beings of her four babbens, and tried to have alone time with each of them. Except she didn't know the first thing to do or say.

"So. Cutie. Um..." Nerves and Inexperience were having so much fun tangling Whip's tongue.

User ImageSince bursting forth from her blister pack Cutie Roll had been a bundle of energy. Exploring the house was her first priority, then exploring the kitchen for food. Food seemed to be her natural calling, having already enjoyed eating everything she could get into her mouth. Sometimes that didn't end well if she found something spicy or sour but it didn't stop her. The spices proved to be an interesting day when she tasted each one, resulting in an upset tummy and a few rushes to the fridge for a glass of milk.

The small green earth filly looked up at her similarly colored mother. The mare seemed uncomfortable, which her mother usually did whenever she or her siblings were getting into mischief. But at the moment all Cutie was doing was mixing some batter for fried fish in a bowl. "Mama.." she looked at her as she stirred.

Cooking. Why did it have to be cooking? Whip's kitchen had been mostly for storage and had only seen use thanks to Latte. And now it looks like one of her fillies was naturally predisposed to it. Was Sea Whip allowed to learn from her own babbens!? She hoped she was.

Okay, so far, so good, Whip told herself, Cutie hasn't shown any signs of wanting you or her to leave. That's... good right? The unicorn coughed a little nervously, then straightened up as if she was acting silly. "Is there anything I can help with?" she offered, her horn glowing as a nearby wooden spoon came floating beside her.

Cutie watched her mother continue to watch her and her cooking. She knew Sea Whip wasn't a cook, she remembered her Mama Latte telling her how she cleaned up the kitchen from being a storage room. Of course her Mama Latte was more of a drink maker, rather than a cook. So Cutie had gone to the library to read up on all sorts of recipes. She leaned towards sea food, perhaps that was where her Mama Whip's genes came into effect.

As she watched the spoon levitate by the unicorn she smiled a bit, "Sure Mama. You stir this while I get the fish!" she giggled and went to the fridge. Of course with Mama Whip there she could use to frying pan! She wanted to make some fried catfish with a splash of lemon. She still needed to add the spices to the batter.

It was nothing short of remarkable, watching the little filly bustle about the kitchen like she owned the place. Whip would have given Cutie the deed to the kitchen if such a thing were possible, it was obvious Whip wasn't making much use of it. What was she supposed to do?

Oh! Right! Stir! Yes, she could do that! "Did you catch the fish yourself?" she asked, genuinely curious and rather pleased at the aquatic ingredients Cutie tended to favor. There was a smile on the unicorn's muzzle as the wooden spoon got a quick wash from the sink before setting about with stirring. Then paused to add, "Err, do I stir fast or slow?"

Cutie smiled as she got out the fish from the fridge. Proudly she placed it next to the bowl where her mother was stirring, "Uh huh! I found a neat little pond near by with the biggest fish EVER!" she held out her hooves as if to show how big the fish were. Her own fish was rather small, most likely a young juvenile but it was big enough for Cutie to handle.

"Just stir it slowly Mama, the batter is kinda chunky so you gotta stir it a long time before you put the fish in it," she smiled before taking a small knife. She wasn't allowed to use really sharp knives unless her mama and mother were there. Cutting the fish into the proper shape for the pan she smiled and made sure the save the scraps for the homeless kitties that lived near by. Then she took some spice jar and began adding a dash of this and a dash of that to the batter Whip was stirring. "Gonna make it taste really good when we fry it."

Whip gave her daughter a quick glance at the mention of the fish being fried. She was certain Cutie wasn't allowed to use a lit stove without Old Enough supervi- oh. "And I'm doing the frying, yes." Her tone indicated there was no arguing with that statement. Not that Cutie was suggesting the sort but, well, Whip was just being careful.

"But maybe when you make dishes that need less oil, I could let you handle the pan next time." It was Whip's concession to the knowledge Cutie would have to learn eventually, while ensuring that the little filly wouldn't be at too much risk.

"Yeeeeeeah, I knoooooow," she lamented a bit before smiling softly. "Mama Latte said I couldn't use to stove top by myself. I didn't think I'd be able to cook today if you hadn't offered to help." She smiled at her other mother as she continued to stir the batter. Finally she decided it was ready for dipping! Taking her cut fish she dipped it in the batter then rolled it in some prepared bread crumbs. Finally she placed them in the pan then looked to the unicorn.

"Ok! It's ready to fry. Don't make it too hot or we will burn the batter!" she grinned brightly.

Whip brightened that she had done something to help the little filly. Maternal instincts might be at work here, after all you looked after your own. "Well, when you're Old Enough, or almost Old Enough, I'm sure Latte will be more lenient with stove rules."

And here was the problem. While Whip was allowed to use the stove, she... hardly used it apart from boiling water for her drinks. Warily, she eyed the pan, her horn aglow as her magic carefully set it on the heated surface.

"Let's do this!" Whip declared with purpose, adjusting her stance as if she were bracing herself for impact. Clearly, this was a unicorn who spent hardly any time in the kitchen.

Cutie giggled as she watched her Mama take more of a fighting stance than a relaxed one as she prepared to cook. Granted flying grease snaps could make a phony dance but still. "Just relax Mama, it only gets exciting the first time you put the fish on," she said with a smile as she pointed to the oil as it began to pop. She squeeked when one popped a bit close and hide behind her mama. She blushed a bit and looked up with a sheepish smile, "Though it can surprise you sometimes."

Cutie helped Wisp learn how to move the pan and flip the fish so it cooked evenly on each side. She had to let the unicorn do this as she was still to young but in the end they had two delicious smelling fish fillets on plates. She quickly chopped some nice carrot and veggies to put with it then presented her creation to her mother. "Look Mama! Lunch!"

The unicorn was seemingly glowing with pride at the finished result. Not bad for her first time actually cooking, although in fact it was more like she was the apprentice and her little filly was the expert. But so what? A pony could always learn something new.

She beamed at her babben and nodded, "Lunch is served!" With her magic, she lifted the plates of food onto the table. "I must say, you're becoming quite proficient with your skills." The praise was earnest in its delivery as Whip tied a napkin around Cutie's neck before doing the same with her own. "It definitely makes up for the, err, lack of it in my department."

Whip's own sense of "when to flip the fish" was basically if she smelled something burning, it was time to flip the fish. Having Cutie actually instruct her was most welcomed.

Cutie smiled happily as her mother praised her performance and settled them down to eat. If nothing else Cutie loved to hear praise from her Momma Sea, as the stoic mare usually reserved her compliments for much grander things. The little filly was filled with joy and a sense of loyalty to her parent for helping in an en devour to which she was not accustomed no skilled at. "Thanks Momma, I'm glad you like it! I want to be a great chef one day and open my own restaurant. And you and Mama and my brothers and sister can all come eat for free!"

Getting a glass of milk for herself and whatever drink her mother wanted she munched on the delicious fish. "And don't worry Momma," she said between gulps, "You can always learn new things. It's fun! And I'll always try to help!"

Having no siblings, Whip had always been self-reliant. It was unusual but not exactly unwelcomed to have other phonies in her life and the warm sense of acceptance and support was lovely. She could get used to this.

"I am certain you shall be successful in your endeavor. You know you will have both mine and Latte's support in whatever you seek to accomplish." Naturally any activity that might possibly be detrimental to the filly and all of phony-kind in general would be dissuaded but the older phony thought that went without saying.

"After we eat, I believe you deserve some rest. Or a nap. I'll handle clean up, that much I'm proficient in handling on my own," she laughed lightly.
