Their little legs, melodious laughter and innocent natures were enough the melt the heart of even the coldest phony. But today, she sight of the miniature phonies didn't make her heart sing; in fact, it made the normally warm spot in her chest ache in a way that she was becoming all too familiar with. She sighed and moved from the window of her cottage. It was becoming harder and harder to see foals.

After her conversation with Latte, she realized how much she wanted some foals of her own. It had come as a surprise; she had been so busy setting up her shop that she hadn't really thought about love and what came after. But now that she had settled into being grown up, the pangs came closer and closer together.

So the normally cheery mare shut her shop down early, and took the day off to instead wander to the town square, where not only foals, but human children were running around. She took a seat on the edge of the fountain, dipping a front hoof into the water and swirling it around dejectedly.

Her tail, being made of the prettiest yarn, tangled easily. And no one liked a tangled skein. Purl was forever trying to get her tail to grow longer: tying baubles on the end, conditioning treatments... While her bread horn horn was special and her wax flank..unique, it was her tail that she was proud of.

And with that thought, Purl swished her way into the town square. She had a dainty satchel slung over her back; it contained her first ever finished knitting project! It also held her current one, because really, who could just stop with one? She surveyed the other phonies and the few humans. Watching others was quite fun generally, but her eye was drawn to a pale pink filly sitting by the fountain. Something about Candy Dandy seemed off today. Purl sat carefully down on the edge of the fountain.

"Hello," she said primly, tucking her tail carefully around her. "How are you? No work today?" She smiled slightly at the other phony. It was strange to see her not at work.

Candy didn't hear the filly come up, and only when she saw the yarn tail swish into her view did her head rise. She gave the tangerine foal a wane smile that lacked her usual sparkle.

"Oh, no. No work today. It was a little slow, so I closed up early." Her smile flickered, just for a second. Then it came back a little brighter.

"What about you? How is school treating you? The other foals aren't making fun of you are they?" She showed genuine concern about this. Many of the latest foals that had sprung from their blankets had certain....additions to them that left them open to being teased. She didn't want the feel out of place.

Purl swung her feet a little as she sat, looking up at Candy Dandy. Something was off... but she wasn't sure what. He flipped her bangs back out of her face. "School is lovely... for the most part." Miss Glory lets me work on my projects during lunch. I'm going to be just like my mom!" An excited smile lit her face briefly, but faded and Purl kicked her leg out. "I just wish I was better at magic. I guess bread has it's limitations...." She sighed melodramatically, slumping forward for effect.

"But," her head popped back up. "I will perfect it. In fact, I have it in my bag my f-" She trailed off and pursed her lips. The normally perkily pink phony was...not perky. Something was wrong. She inched closer. "Are... are you ok, Miss Candy?"

She listened to Purl talk with only one ear, nodding along with the young one's story. When she asked Candy a question, the mare jolted just a bit, and forced a smile.

"Oh! I'm totally ok, I..." she stumbled with her words, and realized that she was caught red hoofed. Candy sighed.

"Actually, I guess I am just a little down today." she said, resigning herself to accept what she was feeling. "It's rather silly actually, I shouldn't be sad. After all, I haven't even been grown up for a year..." Her voice faded away and she shook her head.

"Honestly, it's a silly reason to be upset anyway. Especially when I have someone to talk to as interesting at you!"

Purl waggled her hoof at the pink mare. "Ah ah ah! No changing the subject! While I'm wonderfully interesting; I want to know what's got you so gloomy." Her golden eyes narrowed and she peered up at Candy, who wasn't so dandy at the moment. (She was rather proud of that rhyme although she couldn't mention it now.)

"You know, there is no silly sadness. If you're sad you're sad. If you want to flop over and siiiiigh, then sigh. If your eyes fill with more tears than a raincloud, that's ok!" Purl exclaimed dramatically. She nudged Candy. If she could get her to tell... maybe she could help... somehow?

From the mouth of babes! Candy stared at Purl with more than a little surprise. She was not going to let the subject go was she?

No, Candy saw the determination in her pretty eyes. So the older mare sighed deeply with a defeated smile.

"Alright, you win. " she said, sinking down into a laying position on her stomach on the fountain. "Now don't you laugh." She warned, though without malice.

"I guess I am just feeling lonely. " she went on to say. "I wish I had a special somephony and foals of my own. I mean, I love all the town kiddos. I just wish I had some that were mine. " she felt embarrassed telling this little filly her woes.

i wasn't sure if purl should offer the scarf here or in the next post, what d'ya think?

A flippant reply died on her lips as Candy finished speaking. Suddenly, Purl felt lucky. After all, she had siblings, parents. She flopped down too, mimicking Candy's position.

"You know," she said pensively. "In a way, you're like a mother of sorts to all the foals who come visit your shop. You care about everyphony who visits and it shows! But.... I'm guessing it's not enough." She paused. For Purl, the idea of having kids was something far off and intangible. She supposed that when a phony got older they thought about such things. She wished for a moment that she could be Candy's own foal. Blinking her eyes rapidly, she spoke again.

"You are one of the nicest mares I know! So one day, one day soon- I bet somephony will come along who cannot live without you!" Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "......Maybe they're already nearby and are just shy. Should we go check?"

Next one works!

Candy sighed, rolling her head back and forth on her chin. "Don't get me wrong; I love all of the foals that I have come to known! I'm always so happy to see them grow up and such. But when they reach that particular milestone before me.." she trailed off again, feeling melancholy.

She smiled with Purl's insistence, and lifted her head. "Maybe they are!" she said, a smile on her lips. "And here I am being all gloomy! How ridiculous!" Candy brought her hooves underneath her and lifted her body.

"Haha maybe a walk will do me good!

Purl bounced up and looked around, wide-eyed. Love was in the air.... somewhere. "I read somewhere that moving your body makes you happier too. Though sometimes I prefer to stay still; lounging is my natural state." Purl took a deep breath. "Helllllooooo? Looovveeeee? You there?'

She poked her head under a bush expectantly. It was too small for a grown up, but Candy wanted babies too.... She looked over at the pink mare. "I like you best smiling, but its okay to be sad! And... until you find somephony special to get foals with, you.." She trailed off and lifted out a scarf from her bag. It was beige, had one small hole from a dropped stitch, and had a tiny pony knitted into the end, above the fringe. (The fringe was perfectly done, however). Her horn glowed and the scarf clumsily looped itself around Candy.

"You can have this. It's got a tiny foal on it - I made, the first... for until you can have tiny foals of your own!" Purl had lost count of how many rows she had ripped out and redone. That scarf was the first thing she had finished, but in this moment, she could think of no other phony she wanted to have it, even if that one dropped stitch bothered her so much.

Candy followed little Purl around as she searched under the bush, and giggled. "Hellloooooo, love? I'm right here!"

Her smiled widened. She was about to say something to the foal when a bit of magic levitated a scarf around her neck. She lifted the edge of the scarf, staring out it with an open mouth. It was lovely! There was even a little pony near the fringe!

"I....I don't know what to say!" Candy finally managed to choke out. Her eyes welled up with unshed tears. "I...thank you!" She rushed to pick up Purl, giving her a bear hug.

Blue Eyed Melloon
hmm hmm do you want to end here-ish or continue?

Purl squeaked as she was suddenly hugged, then giggled. To be honest, she hadn't liked the idea of giving something out that wasn't absolutely perfect, but... Candy's expression was worth it. She peeked up at the pink mare.

"Y-you like it? Purl coughed quickly to cover her stutter and tucked the ends of that scarf tighter around Candy. "No time to dawdle! We've got to find you some love! And afterwards, stallion found or not, let's go to my house for some cookies!" Purl grinned cheekily.

We can end it here if you'd like. Then it can count towards her growing!

"I love it!" She insisted, letting Purl go and wiping her eye with a hoof. She once again gazed at the scarf around her neck, and smiled widely.

"Let's go!" she said, following Purl into the wild blue yonder. "Who knows, maybe this scarf will be lucky and I'll meet the stallion of my dreams!" She laughed, happy and cheerful once again.
