Willow Wisp was a very young babben, still learning about the ways of the world. She did not really know any phonies outside of her immediate family; all of her unique characteristics seemed perfectly normal to her. Her brother and sister were just as odd as she was, with their own unique physical attributes, so it never really occurred to her than other phonies did not share some of those traits. That was until she was out and about on her own.

Looking around, saw all many different kinds of phonies; there were unicorns, pegasus, and earth phonies. All of them had matching legs, horns that only lit up when doing magic, but more than anything Wisp noticed the lack of sharp fangs on any phony that walked by her.

Walking through the streets, Wisp’s gaze zoomed in on the mouths of everyone that walked by her. She’d give the strangers simple smiles and noticed that every once in a while someone would do a double take when she flashed her fangs. One phony had such a look of shock, that Wisp felt ashamed and tried to cover up of her fangs as she ran away from them.

Stopping in front of a store window, Wisp stared at her reflection in the glass. Pulling at her face with her hooves, she examined her teeth. Were they that weird? That scary? Letting go, the young filly looked hard at her reflection and sighed heavily. Maybe she’d just have to never smile again, then everything would be fine.

The unicorn slowly turned her head to see who was speaking to her. Pretty? Did this blue colt call her pretty? Wisp checked behind her to make sure no one else was there that he could be talking to; with the kind of reactions she was getting today, Wisp could not believe that someone thought she was pretty. Trying to keep her mouth shut tight and a mumbled barely recognizable reply, “No reason to bother you with.”

Her expression stayed calm, but a little sad with her clammed-up mouth. She eyed the other phony up and down; he looked like all the other ones around. Wisp thought there couldn’t be anyway that he’d understand, or accept her if he saw the teeth.

Wisp’s eyes widened as the colt spoke strangely (or more strangely than she was accustomed to). She could barely understand what it was he was getting it. What she understood was that something to do with eyes is the necessary password to enter this hotel place. Had her sister hexed him to only speak in riddles and gibberish? “What is a Heartbreak Hotel, and why would I wish to stay there?”

“I don’t want to go if I need to smile.” As tempting as it would be to see what, Wisp could only assume, was some kind of lair. Wisp let her mouth relax a little, but would not give in to a grin. “It would frighten even the boogie-man.” Not that Wisp had ever met the boogie-man, but she was fairly confident that even he would look at her much the same as other phonies did.

It was hard to resist. There was certain infectiousness to Blue’s smile that it spread to Wisp. She really could not help, but give a smile back in response to him. “Well that definitely does not sound like a place I would like to stay, let alone visit.”

It took Wisp a second to realize that she was in fact smiling back at Blue. Instinctively, a hoof came up to cover her mouth and see if her fangs where showing. But looking at Blue, and his beckoning to her, Wisp let her hoof fall back down. “Have you ever seen anything like these?” Wisp flashed her fangs.

“You’ve seen fangs on other phonies? Fake ones?” This peaked the unicorn’s interest. Even if they weren’t real fangs, just knowing that some other phony WANTED fangs made Wisp feel significantly better, even a touch proud of them.

Nodding, “Alright, lead the way to this helping miracle.” Wisp fell in line with Blue, walking beside him towards the club.

Wisp’s eyes grew wide as she took in the sight in front of her. The colt had told the truth! There were many many phonies, all lined up with extremely different looks. Her gaze stayed focused on the darker ones with make-up all over and their own fangs. She even noticed one take their fangs out briefly to adjust them. It was very comforting to the young filly to see phonies that pretend to have what she did naturally. The young unicorn couldn’t help but smile as she studied the whole crowd. "This is amazing. They're all so colorful!..Well not that one, that one looks like a vampire. And no one is running away scared? They're just all there together, for fun?"

Then she saw what had the best the funniest costume of them all. Pulling Blue in with one hoof and point with the other, Wisp giggled uncontrollably. “Look at that one over there!” There was a phony with an afro so large others had to stand a good foot away unless they wanted a face full of hair if the phony suddenly moved. “Oh and that one!” Another phony couldn’t even wait to be inside the club and was dancing like nobody was watching, all clad in classic 80s aerobic wear. Everywhere she looked there was phony that made Wisp feel infinitely better about herself, either by being similar to her or completely outlandish. She couldn’t handle the giggles anymore, and flopped down laughing hard.

"I won't, as long as there are friends like you to remind me." Wisp grinned, teeth exposed at her new friend.
