Lake monsters weren't quite as bad as ocean monsters, but there wasn't really an ocean nearby, so lake monsters it was. However, what he really should have been doing was monitoring the weather; before he knew it, a storm had rolled in. Fat raindrops fell, slowly at first, then faster and faster until they began to sting when they hit. It was a frigid fall rain, one of the rainstorms that's a herald of winter snows to come- and Kaiju was caught right in the middle of it.

He didn't mind water, per se- he loved swimming- but this? Painful water? This he minded. The colt galloped from picnic table to tree, trying to find a place to take shelter from the storm; there was no way he'd make it home before it passed. But there wasn't really a lot of cover provided by trees losing their leaves, and the slippery red and gold ground cover made his mad dashes difficult. Mud splashed around his hooves, smearing up onto his coat.

Thunder roared angrily, a monster of its own right; this wasn't going to be over quickly. The miserable colt was more scared than he'd admit; wasn't there anywhere in this park he could stay temporarily?

User Image Flits had perfected the art of makeshift roof by attaching some kite string to a bit of old tent over tall bits of broom stick and mop handles.

As he secured the last bit down, he spied another colt just below him looking somewhat miserable in the rain. Boy, was that kid's hooves and hair glowing in this overcast and darkening sky!

"Heya!" he called down from his fruit crate house. "Whatcha doin' out here?"

If Kaiju were to look up, what he'd see was a shamble of crates nailed willy nilly onto thick branches and a head full of various hair accessories looking down at him.

A voice from a tree drew Kaiju's gaze upward. Staring down at him was another pegasus colt; a green fellow with a turquoise mane, decorated about as much as a mane could be. And- thank the makers- a treehouse. A dry...well, dry-ish looking treehouse. "Getting wet!" he shouted up above the roar of the storm. "W- is-" He choked on his words- he wanted so badly to ask if he could come inside, but how could he invite himself into a stranger's treehouse? "How long have you been out here?" Perhaps if he could draw him into conversation, he'd get an invitation upstairs.

"C'mon!" Flits motioned for him to come up. "I live here!"

Flits pushed things aside and piled them into other boxes. He'd never had anyone for company before. What were you supposed to do when someone visited? He envisioned doilies, tea sets, kittens painted on things... about the only thing he had anything like a grandmother's house was his baskets full of yarn.

His pigeons were all huddled together asleep in another fruit crate, happy and dry. He had no television, no telephone or cell, and his school books were hastily piled off to the side.

"I'll get us some light!" he said, starting on a hand crank to his emergency weather radio. "I got it cheap! It's got a radio, an LED light, and I think somewhere in here it even has a spork. I used it as my alarm clock, too."

He cranked it expertly, pulling up the radio antenna and tuning it to the Phonyland weather station so they could hear the latest storm updates.

Well! The stranger didn't have to tell him twice. Even though they'd never met before, Kaiju was pretty taken in by the green foal's generosity- and trust. They were, after all strangers. As he clambered up into the tree fort, he was amazed at the ingenuity of the place. "Th-thank you! Thank you so much!" he chattered as the stranger cranked up an extremely handy device. "I'm Kaiju Blue- what's your name?" As he shivered, he took in his surroundings. He'd never seen such a place! Balls of yarn, glittery hair things, and feathers littered the place like flower petals, each soft texture brighter than the last. "This... this is a unique place you have here," he said, staring at some strange huddled forms in a darkened crate. "W-what are those?" It was too dark to see exactly what was happening in the crate, but there was something in there that looked alive.

"Gosh, you're pretty soaked, huh?" Flits left the radio in Kaiju's care. "It says it's gonna be raining for another hour or so! My name's Flits N Giggles. You might as well hang out here with us."

Flits rummaged through his box of various towels to find one that was relatively clean. It was hard doing laundry in a drinking fountain and he hadn't found enough quarters and things for the laundromat.

"I hope you don't mind a beach towel," he laughed and handed it to him. "I'm afraid I can't make hot food. Last time I tried, the fire department came, didn't know I was up here, and doused my whole tree! I'd move to a camp site, but I was told I needed to be in school."

Kaiju took the towel gratefully, ruffling his hair dry and wrapping it around his drenched body. "It's a fine towel! And-" he paused, thinking and putting two and two together. "Wait, you live up here? Full time?" He looked around. It was definitely hoof-built; he sensed that perhaps the other pegasus had a sense of pride about it. He knew what it was like to have pride in your own construction. But still... he couldn't even make hot food. "Do you usually use the barbecue pits in the park to make food? Or do you just get it from like, the hot dog cart?" Tree life was intriguing, and he figured conversation might pass the time. He wanted to get to know this new acquaintance a little better, too!

"I tried to once, but someone said kids shouldn't be lighting fires," Flits shrugged. "I don't have money for the hotdog cart. So mostly I keep things like trail mix and stuff from cans. If I can get a few rain barrels, I can do more laundry!"

Flits picked up his latest knitting and hunkered down in a pile of laundry.

"I wanna work at an aviary when I grow up. We went to the zoo once on a school trip," he mused, holding his needles. "I think I could live in those trees just fine. They don't have to worry about it getting too cold or too hot, they even have bathrooms!"

"An aviary sounds nice," Kaiju said politely, shaking his head. He wanted to ask Flits why he wanted to live in trees, but that might be rude, and he really didn't want to upset his friendly host. "What's your favorite kind of bird?"

That was a better question. The thunder boomed again outside; was it his imagination, or was it a little further away this time?

"I like birds that sing," Flits let a long yawn slip as he snuggled down into his pile of things to knit. "Right now I've got my pigeons, but they don't do much other than coo."

He listened to the thunder die down slowly.

"You're welcome to stay here until things let up," Flits smiled at him lazily.

"Pigeons are pretty cool- I like the iridescent feathers they have on their necks. And even though there's lots of them, each one looks different. I mean, you don't even have to look too hard to see that they're brown and white and grey and black and sometimes even kind of blue. All you have to do is actually look." Kaiju stared back into the darkness of where the pigeons were. He, too, let out a yawn. "That's real generous of you, Flits! I'm gonna apologize now if I fall asleep here. It's pretty cozy for a treehouse!"

(( Wrapping it up here, if that's okay! X3 ))

The storm passed by without doing either of them any real harm and, as Flits let his eyes drift closed, Flits felt then how nice it was to share your home and your things with other people. It may not have been much, but it was all Flits had to share. He hoped one day someone would be as giving to him as he was to others.

Kaiju left the next morning after thanking Flits profusely. He was dry and happy, and he found himself pondering store shelves, debating a thank-you gift. He needed to send one, that was for sure. But what to get him? There were a lot of things he could send along as a thank-you gift for the other colt's generosity.

A shiny display of toy robots caught his eye, and he tossed one in his basket. More action figures followed, plus a new video game and a toy baking soda rocket and a model jet fighter. These were great presents! But as he stared at his basket, he frowned a bit. Those were all things he liked. His tree-dwelling new friend wasn't the same as him; he had his own interests!

So he passed up the action figures and the video games and the rubber monsters. He put the toys back where he found them, because the important part of giving a gift was that it needed to come from the heart. You shouldn't give somebody stuff you liked just because YOU thought it was cool. Flits had been generous enough to open his home to a total stranger, and it was important to consider what he wanted.

Instead, he filled his basket with a big bag of organic granola, a giant box of fruit snacks, a bag of birdseed, another bag of these weird millet spray things (the package of which promised that birds loved them), a few skeins of soft yarn, and a tarp from the camping section. Just in case he ever had to fix the roof.

The next day, there was a large parcel wrapped with brown paper sitting at the bottom of Flits's tree. The package said "To Flits- thanks for everything! Hope your pigeons stay dry!" Kaiju knew that the other colt would be happy with it.
