The Temple of Fire
User Image

Sprung forth amid the wilderness surrounding the Fire Country lies a temple, from wherein the many daily recitations and prayers to the Buddha and the Boddhi can be heard. Throughout the exterior features you see flames moving in veiled torrents and merely looking upon them a sense of calmness overcomes you, as if manifest enlightenment drifts forwards from within. You realize, however, that as you look at these features, they are only the beginning of the outer walls of the temple, and you can clearly see a little further inside that a man walks atop a balcony, warmly smiling at you upon arrival. Unsure of whether or not you will enter he merely bows to you, wishing you well, although you cannot hear this affirmation. After a brief moment the monk heads on his way. Should you choose to proceed further you will come to one of two gates, as the rest of the complex is nestled into a dense thicket of trees and the neighboring cliffside, and be greeted by one or two warrior monks, still young in life and willing to protect the temple at all costs. These men will weigh you and your soul, possessing a gaze that seems to move directly through you, and upon acceptance allow you to enter the temple beyond.

As you enter further you see more aesthetic pieces of work with the element of flames worked into them, and while the temple bears a central honour to the Buddha you hear recitations to Kannon mingled in with them as well. Progressing further into the temple you come across multiple sanctuaries as well as the central focus chamber, wherein many monks are amid the recitations you heard earlier. As you pass into the next chamber, you see a monk come towards you, offering you a free meal. The sense and feeling of chakra in the air around you builds as you begin to understand, on a more spiritual level, the significance of this, the Fire Temple.

The furthest chamber which you can enter is a solitary prayer chamber, with but a handful of monks paying homage to Kannon, to whom this temple was dedicated upon founding.

Rules of The Fire Temple:
• Chakra/Stamina restoration posts count for double within these halls
• Combat is not permitted in this locale

Masahiro took note of the young Chuunin following him through the remainder of the trees as he approached the Fire Temple, his eyes staying forward as he felt no need to acknowledge her presence at the moment. At some point many learned the basics of religion, either through their family or through study at the academy, as some techniques existed that were directly believed to be in correlation to said deific powers. As they pair would draw near the main gates Masahiro brought his hands together and bowed to the guard, one who he knew from years of worship and study in these halls during his self-imposed exile. The younger Warrior Monk smiled and nodded to the Jounin who gave him a slight breakdown of what had happened in Konoha and the Midnight Forest, before making a small nodding gesture with his head back towards Koan.

"Chuunin, come on down. There is no need to try and sneak into a temple of the Amida and his Boddhi. Mayhaps my student will learn something besides the way of combat while in these halls." The Jounin called over his shoulder, only then did the Monk become fully aware of the girl's presence.

"I have to atone for the things I have done today, Koan. They are choices I made with a heavy heart, but choices I would make once more if the time came to it." He told her, the gate swinging open before them.

Koan kept her head down and her tracks covered as she followed her sensei to a rather large temple. She had never learned religion and her father had taught her that religion was a method for the corrupt to control the weak. When Mashi called her out she cursed under her breath for him being able to so easily spot her. She quickly jumped from the tree top and landed next to Mashi listening to his words and hearing his desire for repentance. Repentance, that was something she could use. Not just for her sake but for her fathers as well. He had never received a proper burial and she was positive his body did not have the rites of passage an Uchiha of his stature demanded. Turning her attention back to Mahsi and the monk she repeated the bow that her sensei had done just moments prior as she spoke," There are many things in this world that I seek atonement for. If not more myself then for my father. His sins must be atoned for before his body can be properly burred or they will forever be with him." Looking down at herself for the first time in some time she saw the numerous cuts tears and blood splatters that adorned her attire.

"To that end, I must apologize Koan. You alone cannot atone for his actions. We are each bound to this world by our own karma. It is this fact that keeps us and the great Boddhi bound here. While the Amida and his Boddhi have in fact found enlightenment, they often choose to remain among us, to teach us the err of our ways. Our ultimate goal in life as Shinobi is not too far removed from the goal of the Buddha himself. We seek to remove pain and suffering from this world. Your father will still have lifetimes to live out on this Earth to make up for what he has done. But I suppose I too am no different." As Masahiro spoke he led Koan into the temple complex proper, showing her through the entry gallery and into the grounds where a man stood, speaking to a group of children assembled before him.

"Those children, are like you, Koan. They were left here with no knowledge of religion or of the outside world. They're orphans assembled from Konoha and the villages dotting the lands of fire. Many of whom never knew their parents, many did and still question why." He continued, leading her along to the open doorway that lead further into the temple.

Here he stood with her for a moment more, however, bowing even though no one stood here. As he bowed he would then kneel down and remove the straps to his sandals, sliding them aside of the doorway before entering. Two monks quickly coming over to attend to them, handing them outfits of pure white, though Koan would receive a pair of red Hakama to denote herself being a woman in the temple. Masahiro looked to her and nodded to a small room with a sliding paper door.

"Change there, Miss Uchiha." As he spoke several monks tensed up, before returning to duty.

The idea that her father could never find peace in this life was an idea that bothered her. There had to be something that she could do to help him in this life or the next, and even if she couldnt she still felt the need, the desire, to at least attempt to atone for her mistakes and her fathers at the same time. After all the sins of the father are the sins of the whole. She knew that attempting to atone would eventually lead her to Kumogakure. I would have to, she saw her fathers body only once but that one look was enough to confirm one of her worst fears, that her fathers greatest gifts were taken from him. Snapping back to reality she listened to her sensei's words about the children and about how they were similar with a bit of attentiveness. Everything here was new to her and she wanted to understand it. When Mashi removed his sandals she did the same with her boots taking the robes as they were offered to her though not exactly sure why she needed to change. She quickly entered the room without fear of being seen she slowly removed her jacket and her skirt, followed by her shirt. Only now did she get to fully see the number of cuts and bruises that now adorned her otherwise flawless skin. While she wasnt vain she did take pride in the fact that even for an uchiha she was considered an incredibly beautiful young woman. She pulled the robes on one sleeve at a time very careful to get the robes tied tightly to fit her small frame she slipped the red hakama on slowly wincing at the small bolt of pain that ran up her shoulder as she did so. Once she was finished she slowly made her way out of the changing room and back to Mashi and said," I know you think its impossible for me to atone for my fathers mistakes but that was one thing he made clear of before his death. To be burred an honorable man. If I cant do that then I will have failed him."

Masahiro himself would take the clothing he had been proffered, a set and worn outfit of white linen, uncomfortable to the touch. A kosode [inner kimono], Hakama [Pants], and an outer robe, all of which he wore with a certain distinction. The white harkening back to his bloodline and family only an ironic twist of the tradition. As he exited and listened to the words his student spoke he shook his head, she still misunderstood the precepts and the concept of mind behind this avenue. His eyes traced over to her for a moment before he knelt low to pick his katana and tachi up from the mat on which he placed them prior.

"No, I did not say he would be burned or burried a dishonorable man. He did things by the best of his ability and lived by his nindo. But he still did much bad and caused much suffering in life, young Uchiha. By simply carrying on his legacy you are doing him honour, but to live in his infamy, that will dishonour his life." As Masahiro spoke he motioned forward, still unfinished in his business here.

He lead her on to the central hall, wherein many monks sat in worship and prayer. Recitations to Buddha and questions of the purpose were common as they passed through here. To this he only smiled and nodded to Koan.

"Kein was, in a way, a good man. He taught me the curse of hatred, taught me not to become what was consuming me. He also taught me the virtue of saving a life over taking it. To these ends I have many a repayment to make. Today alone I have taken lives Koan, a decision I would make again, and an atonement I would still seek." He said, delivering her unto a small prayer chamber, set aside in the temple. It was a lesser statue of the Boddhi Seishi he had brought her before.

"He didn't believe in most religion, no. But Buddhism gave him a question, several of which he could never answer to be honest. Also, to be true to my word, I would believe they are where he came up with your name. The Zen Koans." He said with a smile, before asking her with one such riddle.

"Free from karma or subject to it,
They are two sides of the same die.
Subject to karma or free from it,
Both are irredeemable errors."

As he repeated this he looked to her.

"Do you understand?"

Almost in a state of mental shock she remembered that her father had once taught Mashi as he now teaches her. Listening to his words rather intently, interested in everything she could learn about her father when he wasnt her father. He was a different man it would seem, Mashi seemed to know him as a wiser man and it was something she couldnt argue though in the later years of his life his sanity did start to break as he became more and more obsessed with power. As he led her though the temple she couldnt help but hear their words though their meaning was lost on her as she did not recognize the chant. When he spoke of her namesake and how he thought she got her name her mind was for lack of better words blown. Her father had named her Koan for a reason, turning to her sensei she said," Sensei before I answer your question, do you think my father named me the way he did knowing that I would come here some day, that YOU SPECIFICALLY would be my sensei? It seems impossible how can someone have that much wisdom and foresight, to effect things even after their passing?" Giving his riddle some thought she said," Im probably off but I think it means that while our Karma doesnt shape who we are, it does shape who we can become and who we can be. Meaning that we are not not subject to karma but are not free of the laws of it. In that way we are free of it and subjects to it."

"No, you were born some time before the two of us met, unfortunately. He spoke highly of you in your youth, however. You still misunderstand the ideology of Karma, however, that is to be expected. You're young and untaught, as of yet untrained to the way of the world. Then again, being untrained is the perfect state to be in here. One cannot continue to learn if their cup is overflowing. One must first empty their cup to refill it." As he spoke he nodded and clapped his hands together gently, lighting two sticks of incense for himself and Koan, presenting them at the feet of Seishi.

"Karma is not the influencing force of us, but merely the embodiment of our choices and studies in life. Those who continue to live out lives of negativity and intentions of causing harm to others will be brought back to this world time and time again to live out their karma. Should they live a bad enough life they will suffer a short lifespan in the hellish realm of Naraka, in which they will live out the sufferance they've placed on others until their debt is repaid and they can attempt this realm once more. Kein will come back some day. He'll live out his karma, and maybe in the next life, whether he calls upon the Buddha or not, he'll balance out his Karma and seek the shores of Nirvana instead. Even this state, mind you, will be temporary. Samsara is a circular path, and even we who reach enlightenment will eventually desire to return, be it for ourselves for for those who we have not yet managed to assuage into Nirvana." As Masahiro spoke he began gentle recitations to Buddha and Seishi both, bowing his head before the statue as he did so. Every two recitations he would raise his head and look to his young student.

"Were Kein a man to know such mysteries of life so far ahead, perhaps he would have been the next or current incarnation of Seishi. But his path of pain and destruction left him bereft of the mantle that Seishi wore in life."

Koan listened very quietly as he spoke of karma and her father. Her voice became very soft and quiet as she spoke," I know my father was a good man, deep inside I know he was. But the thing I cant understand is why he did the things he did. He told me once that it was vengeance for having my mother taken from us. But if that were the case he would have stopped once he had slain them." Listening to his words about keins possible rebirths and said," Before he died the very last time I saw him he told me that I was his living legacy. That I was to carry on his plans, though I dont know what they are. He told me that his power would be my power one day. Your wisdom exceeds my own so I would like to know what you think of this?"

"Knowing Kein, it can only be a portent of things to come. He was, at his core, a fair bit egotistical after all..." Masahiro began as he let his eyes meet with hers, "But perhaps he believes that in his passing and the loss of your mother you will grow to understand a level of power well beyond even the wellspring he had struck. But perhaps too he knew of the involvement I would have in your life. Mayhaps he expects that you will come to a level of prudence with your gifts that he could not muster. He felt accursed by his hatred, torn by what it made him. At least as far as I knew him."

Masahiro thought over his own words for a bit. His understanding of her father was different than the light and fear the world would cast on his feats. As he thought of the duality of this nature, then recited one more of the Koans.

"When you understand, you belong to the family;
When you do not understand, you are a stranger.
Those who do not understand belong to the family,
And when they understand they are strangers."

"This is the nature of how your father lived. Yet it is seemingly the nature of how we all live. This world expects us to understand so many things, yet for it we know nothing. We expect the world to teach us, yet it shows us nothing. Your father was caught in this spiral after the death of your mother. He raged on, felling any and everyone whom crossed his path, and in his rare moments of sanity he sought sanctuary. His sane mind drifted in bouts of melancholy, he saw his place in the cosmology, but as soon as he realized this, his nature of wanton destruction returned. To me, I believe he reached some twisted form of enlightenment, broken by his violence."

His words rang over and over in her head, reached his own twisted enlightenment. It seemed that her sensei would continuously give her more questions than answers. Every time she spoke to him it gave her more to think about than when she first met him. Taking a deep breath she took a step back and bowed deeply at her waist before she spoke," You have given me much to think about sensei. As always I am very grateful for your wisdom. If you will excuse me, I will retire back to the city." Giving him one more bow she quietly made her way back through the temple giving the monks that greeted her the very same level of respect that they showed her. She didnt know why but she felt.. more at peace here. Not sure as to weather or not she should return the robes or keep them, not knowing where he original cloths were either, made her way from the temple following the path back to konoha.

Masahiro sat in silence as he watched the girl leave, his eyes closing as he offered up a silent prayer to the Buddha for the girl and for her father, wheresoever his soul lay currently. As he did so he reached one hand into the sleeve of his robe and removed a scroll that he had long held, one of the last remaining objects of his father. Unraveling the scroll he lay it before him and the votive of Seishi, looking at the complex seals that lay upon the paper. He smiled as he picked apart the strategic use of fuuinjutsu, but realized that he would never be able to utilize this the same way his father had, but instead he began to roll out blank canvas, reworking the seal around a new core, now resembling more of the Dharmic Wheel of Samsara than a gemstone, the writing was intricate, but it would only respond to one person. The person who first inscribed it upon their flesh. One could not use this ability on another, nor force open a gateway of theirs to steal the abilities born within them. This was his dharmic way.
[1/4]

As he began to write the seal out he tested the viability of it by pouring a slight amount of his own chakra into the seal, to which it responded with the sensation of flames, cold and blue. Serenity wellspringing from the parchment before ultimately the paper rejected to open the gate to actively store chakra. At this end Masahiro simply shrugged back his shoulders and gave a smile. The work of his father was showing through in his dissection of this eisijutsu, that had been his father's only redeeming value at times, his analytic mind. This trait Masahiro too observed, was his own, as he had taken such a rough idea behind the understanding his father had and put it to paper, and soon enough to fruition.
[ 2/4 ]

The jounin smiled as he drew forth from the foot of the shrine a small block of stone and pigment, rubbing a stone through the pigment to break it up before he added a few drops of water into the mix to make it a viable ink. He made a gentle hacking cough at the smell of the mixing pigment, it was bearable but an irritant nonetheless. Studying the fuuin one more time Masahiro decided that it would in fact be a viable solution to a battlefield problem. Taking the end of a burnt out stick of incense, still hot from the ash, he dipped it into the ink and began to apply the markings to his skin on his left shoulder.
[ 3/4 ]

A wince of pain crossed his face as he dug the pattern into his skin with the hot rod and fresh ink. The pinpoint work of it, although, had to be precise, and as such he took his time, running hot scrapes over his flesh time and time again to make clarity of the image. As he finalized the design of the seal he looked into the burnt and inked flesh, a sense of pride and recognition washing over him as he did so. The smell of singed flesh brought the attention of two monks who merely took a look upon Masahiro and the markings on his shoulder, freshly added to the scars along his back. Bowing their own reverence and apology for intrusion they left and Masahiro turned to face them.

"Fare well enough not to apologize. You have brought me no suffering, but a measure of enlightenment, knowing that others in this world do care not to harm others, but instead for their well being."

Now turning after he gained a full breadth of his technique he spent a moment to focus his chakra inward, allowing the gate he designed to open, pushing the maximum amount of chakra it would hold inside of it. His eyes closing gently after he did so. The seal taking root in his shoulder, blue flames surrounding the seals as the chakra he stored within continued to burn and swirl within it. The feeling new and intense to him, drawing forth an even larger sense of pride, which he had to fight back down.

Masahiro remained seated in the temple, pressed before the statue of Seishi. His eyes met the cold bronze for a few moments before returning down to the scroll at his knees. His hands splayed out a little further on the scroll, opening it further to expose more of the blank space within. Here the man quickly took to writing a new listing of his technique, but now as he did so he kept a particular train of thought in mind. This time it wasn't focused on expanding the art he had just made, but now instead it was on tieing the same technique to his recently acquired abilities. Drawing on the breath of his Sennin Mode he thought of the mixture it took to create the proper balance and let his hand follow in this aspect. Guiding brush against canvas as he focused further inward.
[ 1/4 ]

The Jounin smirked as he pored over the work, the designwork of the feature shown to him as he began to work in the natural elements. The power he felt pouring forward something from beyond just the chakra that naturally rested in him. This was the amalgamation of power truly bounding forward, in his opinion. The scent of the incense was building within the mind of the jounin and within his lungs as well, making his head somewhat swimmy as he continued to work out the fascinating intervals that came to him. The sage path was an interesting riddle to him, which he must figure out further and further in his own mind.
[ 2/4 ]

Following these advancements the sennin pushed himself slightly into Sennin Mode, his eyes only beginning to take on the appearance of his sage chakra as he pushed the energy he gathered into the seal written upon the scroll. With a working method shown he drew his mind and eyes back, watching the orange whisps rise from the scroll he took a slight interest in it and sought to see if he could open the gate, yet to no avail. It simply would not adhere and open on any non-living host. All the better he believed, to not allow this into the hands of anyone who could take advantage of it. The sound of the door opening behind him, however, drew in Masahiro's attention.
[ 3/4 ]

"Oh, apologies, I did not notice you were within the chamber Sir Hatake. I take it you are faring well, however. I will await for you to vacate before I come in to make my offering to Seishi." The Monk told the Shinobi, smiling to him as he delivered a curt nod and a short bow, then standing and removing himself from the room, shutting the door behind himself.

Masahiro smiled, enjoying the presence of the monk for the short time that it had lasted, understanding too that he should probably be retiring himself from the location shortly. He took up another recently burnt out piece of incense and returned to the process of carving his own flesh. Burning the ink for the seal directly into his skin. His hands running over the fresh marks before he official drew himself into Sennin Mode, drawing his own body to centre and drawing in Sennin Chakra..
