Her babies were all grown up.

Jini was not always sure that she'd done the right thing by them, when she'd returned to her homelands to give birth. She'd left Kura without telling him about the pregnancy, because she'd been afraid of what he would say. So much time had passed since then, and Jini remembered the moments they'd shared, and his arrogant smirk, with fondness. But Kura had not seemed like the fathering type, and Jini had not wanted to give him the opportunity to abandon her.

Jini lazed in the shade of a tree with her sons, but there was no respite from the heat of the savanah today. Even the wind that ruffled her fur was warm.

Nyiju rested near his mother, chin on his paws, and with a dreamy expression on his face. His head was full of thoughts about a lioness he'd met the day before. She'd been witty, and beautiful, and he rather thought that he would like to meet her again--

-- the scent of a strange male was carried to them on a breeze. He glanced at his brother out of the corner of his eye, and sat up.

"Kafil, do you smell that?"

"What?" Jini asked, sniffing the air. She tensed at once, because it belonged to somebody familiar. Somebody who, once upon a time, when her heart was young and sweet, had meant a great deal to her.

Kaikura couldn't remember the last time he'd seen another lion. Two weeks maybe? In the end it didn't much matter. He didn't seek them out. In fact, it was easier to skirt around them. While he was confident in his fighting abilities, it was still a pain in the tail to have to beat up anyone who tried to chase him off their land. He wasn't interested in their land and their prides. All he focused on was staying strong and alive. It was better being alone like this. It suited him, he told himself. There was, after all, nothing else to tell himself about the issue.

The last few days had been rough on the prey side, though. So rough that he'd though screw it and crossed over a pride's border. After all, it was only temporary. And because it was some pride's land, there were lion scents, old and new, everywhere. But what he was concerned with that the gemsbok grazing about 15 feet away. Idiot animal was away from its herd. Was it trying to make it easy for him?

The wind shifted and Kura knew he had to jump now or lose it. His scent had just been tossed downwind. Just as the gemsbok raised its head he leaped forward and rushed it.

Kafil sat with his mother and brother on the outer edges of the shade finishing off they kill he'd brought for them to share a few hours ago. Ever since he'd gotten older he'd made a stubborn effort to help care for his mother, though he knew she wasn't in dire need of it. So, like most days, he'd decided to eat last. It meant that his nose was still pushed into the carcass when his brother called to him.

Though the blood he could smell it vaguely. But not only that, there were sounds and they were getting louder. Sudden a gemsbok bolted into sight and leaped through the group of them and away. Unfortunately, right on his tail was a huge male lion, which showed just as much regard for them as the gemsbok did.

Kafil pushed to his paws, "Momma, look out!"

Kura used to consume the whole of her mind. Once upon a time, all Jini wanted was to earn his attention and keep it. Provoked by his confidence and conceit, she'd followed the wings of the lovestruck butterflies that fluttered in her belly, and had all but stalked him into spending time with her. When the gemsbok erupted over the horizon into their line of vision there was no time for Jini to run or hide.

The gemsbok leapt into the air and soared over her head. She cried out, Kafil's warning ringing in her ears, and knew what was coming before it hit her. Kura was large and powerful, and very solid. Jini snarled when he made contact, barelling over her in his hunting frenzy. Dust flew up in a cloud around them. She rolled onto her back, teeth bared and claws ready, because she didn't know what he would do-- if he would even remember.

Nyiju was on his feet, a growl rumbling in his throat. He lowered his head, tail flicking, and prepared to defend his mother. He was peaceful by nature, and aware of the fact that this stranger hadn't actually attacked anyone. They'd all seen the gemsbok. Still, his heart thundered in his chest, and a menacing light glistened in his blood coloured eyes.

Kura's sons were young, but they'd inherited his size, and his great strength. Nyiju was only a little bit smaller than Kafil. Should Kura choose to fight, he would find himself with a hefty challenge.

Kaikura had barreled after the gemsbok, his primary focus downing the thing. It wasn't that he hadn't known there were other lions there. But the stupid creature veering in their direction had been sudden and stupid on the animal's part, so he hadn't been expecting it. There was no time to think, only react, and he plunged forward just a few bounds behind.

He'd slammed right into a lioness, barreling her over, which wasn't hard considering his size. In a leap he was over her, having no time to get tangled up in someone who was in his way-

Kafil rammed into the strange male, knocking him back. He tried to occupy the space between him and his mother, his ears flattened on his head.

While the attack hadn't hurt him, it had knocked Kaikura off-balance and sent him back a step. In the one or two heartbeats it took to stand and face the pride lions the gemsbok was long gone. His meal was long gone. Useless idiots. All of them.

"What lumps of useless flesh are you?" he snapped, a bitterness and a bit of an edge to his voice. He wasn't terribly happy. "Self-preservation requires you move out of the way of incoming danger, or is that a skill none of you have?" His focus lay with the two males, partly because one obscured his view of the female, and also because they were as close to a threat as he would get out here. Except for their reflexes, it seemed.

Jini loved all of her children, but her heart swelled in a special way when Kafil leapt to shield her from the lion who should not have been a stranger to him. She was proud of his bravery, and of his goodness. Jini knew, because he'd gone out of his way to look after her now that he was grown up, that there was almost nothing Kafil wouldn't have done for her.

"Stop," she said firmly, giving Nyiju a look that rooted him to the earth, and hurried to her feet. Kafil did not know his father. Kura she did not expect to have fatherly inclinations, but he had never hurt her before. Not physically. All of this hostility was unnecessary.

She moved to stand next to Kafil, and fixed Kura with her blood coloured stare. The expression on her face was unreadable. He was as unpleasant and as arrogant and as handsome as she remembred. It made Jini uneasy, to know that he had the same effect on her now as he had when she was little more than a girl.

"Boys, this is your father."

Nyiju made a soft sound and looked, for a moment, as though he wasn't sure he believed her. He stepped up to stand on his mother's other side, glanced at Kafil, and searched his mind for something to say. As children they had never lacked for love or guidance. He had wondered about the identity of his father, but not pined after him. Now that they were face to face, however, Nyiju found himself curious.

"For somebody so concerned about self-preservation you're an awful long way from home, Kura." Jini's voice was hard.
