Candy Dandy was in the mood for a walk after finishing a particularly difficult order. The basket sat in all its glory, waiting to be delivered first thing in the morning. Candy admired it one more time, then shut off the light in the kitchen. It was early evening, and her stomach told her that she hadn't eaten in hours. When she "got into the zone" as it were, she lost track of time and all annoying bodily needs. Including food. She stepped out of her house to find that it was sprinkling, so after grabbing a hat and tying around her head, she trotted to the nearest cafe, which offered outdoor seating under the cover of an awning. The pink phony didn't care for rain, it always made phonies gloomy. Her hooves splashed through puddles as she made her way through town, waving hello to everyone she knew along the way. It may be raining, but that didn't prevent phonies from selling their wares!

Oh bummer, it was raining again! The sky had been doing that a lot lately. Malt sighed as he folded his wings tightly against his little body. After his meeting with that terrifying (but regal!) alicorn, Malt was afraid to get himself muddied. You never know when she might appear again! But his wings were not strong enough for flying in the rain and the ground was too muddy to splash in. Grumbling a little, Malt stood as patiently as he could under the awning of a small café. It was times like this that one would like a rich cocoa drink, steamy with lots of sugar and cream…

As the pink mare approached the cafe, she saw a gloomy looking foal standing underneath its awning, staring at the rain like he dearly wished it would stop. She paused for only a moment, and realized that he was all alone. Well that wouldn't do! She trotted over, splish splashing away before she too was under the awning. The noise from the cafe could be heard behind them, and was louder every time somephony opened the door to either enter or exit. "Hey there." She said brightly, offering the colt a smile. "Why are you so down?"

Malt blinked in surprise as a friendly voice greeted him. Looking up, Malt gave the mare a sheepish smile. Malt knew most phonies did not like seeing someone down in the dumps and this cheery looking mare was no different. A guilty look now crept into the foal’s small feature. “I’m sorry to worry you, Ma’am,” said Malt politely. “It’s just that…I need to get home soon but the rain won’t stop,”
“I have been trapped here for an hour already,” said Malt with a reproachful look at the heavy grey sky.

Candy inwardly squealed. Ma'am! He called her ma'am! Just like she was a real grownup! Well, she was a real grow up after all, so it would make sense that he would acknowledge it. But the little foal was so polite about it! Candy's smile grew wider, threatening to split her face in two. "Well, since the rain won't stop, how about you wait it out inside?" she suggested, pointing her hoof towards the door. There were lovely smells coming from inside, enticing the pink haired pony to enter and buy as many things as she could eat. "We could even get some hot chocolate. I am pretty sure it is freezing out here!" for added effect, she shivered mightily.

“I would like that very much!” said Chocolate Malt gratefully. Any treat from a grownup was a welcomed one. Despite having pocket money of his own from North, Malt preferred to spend it on buying even more ingredients for his chocolate cooking experiments. Grinning widely enough to match the mare own smile, Malt quickly trotted after Candy. “Umm,” said Malt when they were finally seated at a cozy corner of the café. “I don’t think…I know your name, Ma’am,” the foal said shyly. “I’m Chocolate Malt”

"It's nice to meet you Chocolate Malt! Mmmm I like chocolate...oh! Well anyway, my name is Candy Dandy!" She waved over a waiter, and gave him their order. Two hot chocolates with whipped cream and a couple chocolate chip cookies. Once their order had been placed, she looked back to the brown foal, and said "Well alright. Now that we are in and out of the rain, how about a joke?" Candy did love jokes, and they were a sure fire way to make someone feel much better!

Ah! Candy Dandy! That very name itself indicated that this was phony who delighted herself with the tasty things in life. Malt could relate to that. A world without taste would be a very gloomy and sad one. When Candy Dandy placed an order for two hot chocolates with whipped cream AND cookies, Malt gave a small nod of extreme approval. This was the kind of food he liked best! Warm, thick and delicious! Little wings gave an excited flutter of anticipation. “Umm…sure?” said Malt looking from the retreating waiter back to Candy Dandy. “I like jokes that make me laugh,”

How wonderful! Somephony who loved jokes! Candy drew herself up, ready to present her joke when the hot chocolate and cookies arrived. She out up a hoof, sipping the steaming mug before clearing her throat dramatically. "Why did the dog cross the road twice?" Pause for effect..... "Because he was chasing a boomerang!" she crowed, giggling uncontrollably. Her sides bounced with mirth and she laughed for a bit before taking one of the cookies and biting into it.

Just as Candy Dandy was about to tell her jokes, the chocolate arrived. Eyes widening just a tad at the luxurious cup of cocoa and its generous dollop of whipped cream, Malt quickly took a sip and lets out an appreciative sigh. It was good stuff. Then came the joke. “Dog…cross the road…boomerang?” said Malt quizzically before the joke sank in. “O-Oh! I get it! The boomerang turned back! That’s why the dog crossed the road twice!” The foal let out a soft giggle. “That’s pretty neat. Tell me one more,”

"Sure thing!" Candy said, loving the attention. After the first one hit home, she would have to come up with a really good second one...
Candy went into a pondering state, eyes unfocused as she racked her brain for a good joke that she was sure Chocolate Malt would get. And more importantly, would think was funny. All the while, she drank her hot chocolate, enjoying the fresh spread of warmth in her stomach with each gulp.
A look of triumph crossed her face and her ears hot forward. "I got it! What did one eye say to the other?"
She stifled a giggle, and practically shouted "Between you and me, something smells!" She pointed at her nose, laughing uproariously.

While Candy Dandy was thinking up a joke to tell, Malt took his time savouring the delicious cocoa and biscuits. They were a really good combination. Perhaps he should tell North about this café. After all, North was…kind of having a special somephony and this place was warm and cozy.
When Candy Dandy told the second joke, Malt didn’t even have to think to get it. Snorting into his cocoa, Malt let out a shrill whinny of laughter. It was so funny! The other patrons of the café seemed less amused by the uproarious attitude of the two phonies but Malt was laughing too hard to mind much.
“You tell great jokes M-Miss Candy Dandy!” the foal said when the laughter finally subsided. “I really like them!”
Outside, the rain was beginning to lessen and already several of the customers were taking their leave.

Candy grinned. They were going to get in trouble soon if they didn't quiet down. Already they were getting stares from other patrons. When the waiter came over, she paid their tab, and looked back outside, still chortling.
"Well thank you! I'm glad to think my humor hasn't rusted. I think we should take our leave. And look! That rain has stopped!" Candy ushered the young one out, much to the delight of the other patrons.
"Maybe next time we meet you'll have a joke for me!" she chimed, tying her hat back on to her curly head.

“Sure, I’ll tell you the best joke ever!” said Malt with giggle as he was ushered out of the café. “And thank you for the cocoa and cookies Miss!”
Scampering through the muddy streets, the little foal could be heard giggling as he repeated the words “Something smells!”

Candy giggled, watching the little alicorn scamper away. "What a nice kid. I'll bet he will be a great adult someday." she said to herself, turning and going to opposite direction. Back to work for her!
