Go outside, they say. Outside is fun. Barley would agree outside was fun, but not in this heat! Besides that was not the reason her mama had pushed her out of the house. Alright, so she may had gotten a little carried away with her latest drink experiment. Having a very small sweet tooth, she had employed her mother and her brother to be taste-tester for the butterbeer recipe.

Barley sighed as she reviewed her notes, while sitting under a tree's shade. The last three attempts had been deemed not fit for phony consumption. So horrible was the last one, her mother had pushed her out of the house, telling her to take a walk in the park and clear her mind. Well, Barley didn't work that way. At least she was sure she didn't. She huffed as she scratched out another ingredient and paused at seeing a balled up paper rolled by her.

She tried to remember if she had gotten frustrated to rip up one of her recipes. Frowning, she picked up the litter and smooth it out. No, that was a flyer to some party. She saw another ball of papre rolled by when a breeze picked up. Then another...wait, that wasn't paper, that was tinfoil. What the heck?

Gathering up her things back into her saddle bags, she pounced on all three pieces of trash and went on to hunting for a trashcan.

She packed her book into a saddlebag, and took off into the harsh heat. Maybe she could find a nice shady spot to sit, and the day wouldn't be completely ruined.

Up ahead on the path, Lemure spied a green filly balancing several small objects. It looked like she was looking for something. Lemure watched for a bit, and it seemed like the other foal was pretty upset about something. Was she some sort of circus juggler who couldn't find a crowd to preform for? Or maybe she was on a scavenger hunt, and was clueless about the next clue?

Her curiosity piqued, she approached her, "Is there something I can help you find?"

"Yeah, do-" Barley's words stopped suddenly as she got a look at who she was talking to. The green filly was sure she could see the cobblestone path THROUGH her legs. Perhaps the heat was getting to her, if that was teh case, she didn't want to know what it was like for the filly with a dark coat like the one standing by her.

Clearing her throat, she plaster on a smile. "Have ya seen a trashcan?" The park seemed very lacking of any.

Lemure suddenly felt very insecure about her ghost-legs. It was a constant problem for her when dealing with other Phonies. She concentrated on keeping her hooves firmly on the ground and not in the ground. It was a lot harder than it seemed when she got flustered.

"I think there was one behind me," she said while turning and pointing in the direction she came from. "What are you carrying all that stuff around for? Isn't it a little hot to be doing yard work?"

Barley notice the change in demeanor, but said nothing about it. She looked in the pointed direction. "Ya, I suppose it's a bit hot, but I cannae work with all this trash around!"

She picked up another piece as she walked steady to the trashcan. "It's like folk don't got any manners just 'cause it's hot."

Ah. Lemure figured out what was happening now; she was picking up the garbage laying in the park. Didn't they have staff that got paid to do that kind of stuff? Why would she be doing it?

She trailed along behind the filly, "So you're just walking around the park and picking trash up?" She scowled at the thought of doing any sort of work on what should be a lazy day. "By the way, you can call me Lemure. My full name is Lemure of Love Lost, but that's really a mouthful."

Throwing away the few pieces she had collected, Barley shrugged. The concept of not doing anything was not something she was familiar with. "Well, if I can't do my work, then what am I suppose to do? Just sit 'bout and do nothing while the park gets dirtier? 'Sides, mama told me to stop thinking about my work..this kinda works. "

"That is quiet a mouthfull." She laughed softly. "I am called Barley Pop, but you can call me Barley, Lemure. Nice to meet ya."

Hum.... well, it certainly did seem like the right thing to do. "Nice to meet you too, Barley. Maybe I can help." Lemure looked around the park; Barley was right, it was really dirty. Junk was everywhere, but she just had been too busy, day dreaming as usual, to notice it.

She poked a hoof at what looked like a deflated balloon. Ew. It was kind of sticky. Maybe she'd pick some cleaner things up, and come back to that one.

Lemure made small talk to help the time go faster, "What type of work do you? I help out at my moms' bookstore from time to time when they need a break."

"Well, I make beer, normally." She took put a few pieces of papers and threw them across the bench, trying to land them inside the trash can. She gave a huff when she missed with the last one before grinning. "But mah brother told me to make something for foals, and well, it's a bit hard, cause you know. Foals like sweet things. "

"There is this drink in one of our favorite books that mama used to read to us, but it doesn't have a recipe, 'cause it's fictional..." She picked up a stick and poked the balloon with it until it snagged. "And well, it is a bit of a challenge to make."

Fictional drinks! Now they were talking.

"In one of the series I read, they go to a magical tavern where the beer is made by a Norse god who has nothing better to do with his free time. It tastes sweet like honey, but more than a mug of it will make a human pass out for a day. The main character, a tough, smart, and beautiful witch named Helena LeFae, usually challenges some smart-talking man to a drinking match. If he wins, she'll sleep with him, but she always wins. She kind of cheats though, and uses spells to boost her fortitude."

Lemure thought about it. "So I guess the moral of the story is that really good beer comes down from the gods. Also, that you shouldn't challenge a witch to a drinking contest."

This chatter was making the time pass quickly, and it seemed like they had a good chunk of the park done already! Progress!

Barley found herself pausing a few times to listen to the other filly. "Ya, well, gods don't go to wait weeks for something to ferment before they know if it's bad or good." She laughed softly.

"Maybe I can borrow that book? It sounds like lotta fun" She let most of the conversation be held by Lemure, the girl seemed to like to talk about books, while she liked to make a game out of gathering up the trash and trying to get in the garbage basket at different distances. "Witches be tricky, but you can get around them by throwing water on them..."

The beer making process was a lot more complicated in real life than it was in books for sure. Magic makes things go faster, maybe a unicorn could make beer ferment at a better pace. It was another one of those times where Lemure wished she had magical powers like the girls in her books did. "I'd be willing to lend you any novel you like! I have a lot of them; I go though books pretty fast."

She watched as Barley threw the trash into the barrel. She made it look easy. It didn't seem like something Lemure would be good at though, so she stuck to just walking the trash to the basket and dropping it in nicely. "That's just in The Wizard of Oz that witches melt in water. Real witches don't have weaknesses like that, but they tend to lose in physical fights. They're pretty powerful, and can do some scary stuff, but they're not be best of the preternatural realm. I guess it depends on which books you're reading though. Each author comes up with their own hierarchy."

Hmmm...it seemed her joke miss the filly all together, none the less, Barley smiled as it send her into another rant. She had a nice voice to listen to, the green filly thought she probably make a good story teller."Well, any witch can die by a liquid, depending how you look at it." She winked and tossed one last piece of trash before jumping onto a bench to look further around. "The park looks much better now! What do you think?"

While it was true that most people could die in water, In actually history, people drowned women they thought were witches, because supposedly a witch was in league with the devil and wouldn't be able to drown. Although, she was pretty sure that wasn't true either, but she really didn't want to test it and find out. It was too morbid of a subject to bring up on such a cheery day, so she didn't press the topic. With her ghostly heritage, persecution was a sore subject for Lemure. Since she was (partly) a supernatural creature, she didn't like the idea of witch hunts, or werewolf hunts, or anything else like that.

She shook herself out of it; Lemure really read too many books, and was too gloomy for her own good. Looking around the park, she could see how spectacular it was! Not a piece of trash around! "Barley, this is amazing! The park is so much nicer than in was before!"

It seemed that doing a good deed and making a new friend was a far better way to have spent the day. Lemure wasn't upset for being forced outside anymore.

Barley stretched a little and grinned. "Thanks for helping, Lemure!" One of her ears perked up, hearing the familiar bell chime of one of the food carts. The cheery tune told her it was more then likely the ice cream one.

"Come on, I think we deserve a treat, and maybe you can tell more about that book. Is it a series?" She started towards the the direction of the food cart, happy to have made a new friend.
