After Ikebana had left, Barley had diligently walked around the bakery, helping one or two customers that came before she heard a ding from the kitchen. Checking that the floor of the bakery was empty of any more customers, she quickly rushed towards the back.
The scent of the beer was a big stronger, but as she started to filter it to be cool down, she didn't think she would have the patient to wait the weeks it needed to rest, but she would! Yes, she would. Her ears twitched, trying to keep some attention to the bakery but finding herself already losing interst on anything but her drink.

Bon Appetit sighed softly as she trotted back to her bakery. Due to a biscuit disaster the previous week she was all out of flour. So the mare had left her green daughter in charge of the shop while she ran out to the wholeseller to purchase more ingridents. She knew Barley would do a good job, she and her brother were always helping her.
But it was the first time she had left one of them alone. Kit was a bit too eager so she had choosen Barley to be in charge. Coming up to the door she opened it in her usual gentleness, which meant the bell didn't ring very loud. Looking around she noticed there were no customers......and no cashier. Where was Barley? At first the mother grew nervous, thinking perhaps someone had come in and tried to rob them. But no one did that here. Then....she smelled it.
For all her gentle nature Bon Bon was relatively easy going with her children. But this time she could not approve of this. Leaving the store unattended while the filly made a drink she wasn't even old enough to drink herself. Setting her stuff down she walked silently into the kitchen, getting almost right behind her daughter, and glared down at her. At least as much as she could. "Barley Pop! Why aren't you at the counter?!" she spoke.

Barley squeaked in surprise, all her fur standing on end and she almost dropped everything she had been working with. Managing to keep steady hooves on the items, she settled them down as her little heart pounded away in her chest and turned around on the stool, shaking a bit.
"Well..I..um..I..uh.." She stuttered away, opening and closing her mouth while trying really hard to think of something. "...I am sorry"

Bon Bon frowned at her daughter, probubly the worst thing ever she could do to her children. She looked at the creation her daughter had been working on, gave it a sniff, then shook her head. So it really was beer, or at least the beginnings of a batch. She knew Barley had a talent for drinks but really, when she had a job?
"Barley I am very deesappointed in you," she shook a hoof at the girl, "We could 'ave 'ad cuztomearz and zey would leave wizout zear ordares!" She looked down at her, their grey eyes matching and shook her head, "I truzted you wiz ze store while I waz gone. And zis ez what I find you doeng."

Barley hang her head, shuffling a hoof on the wood under her. "I am sorry, mama...." She poked her hooves together. "The shop been so quiet and I thought I could do both...."
It wasn't often that she found a kitchen empty of her brother and mother and the temptation had been a bit much for the young filly.

Bon sighed as she looked at Barley, the filly looked quite sorry and Bon's soft heart couldn't take much more of her sad face. Ah she could be a push over mother at times, all it took was a pouty face. She sat down next to her daughter and put an arm around her shoulders, "Barley, I know eet ez 'ard to get zet keetchen to yourzelf wiz Kit alwayz wanteng to cook. But I truzted you to watch ze zhop becauze I thought you wear more mature."
She stroked Barley's blonde hair, another traint the girl had gotten from her mother. "You are ze most calm of your ziblengs. Able to zink first zen act. Zat ez why I put you en charge."

Barley leaned against her mama and stared up at her, her words making her feel even more guilty for betraying her trust. "I am so sorry, mama. I'll do better, I promise."

"Ah Barley I know mon petit. Ze keetchen ez en your blood. Eet ez zomezing zat callz to you. I know, I was like you onze," she chuckled.
Bon Bon smiled and kissed her little one's forehead. Perhaps she should punish her but her family was a culinary one so all but Knots Bight seemed to be destined to spend their time in the kitchen. Even she as a young one was always making something. Then again she was a baker not a brewer. Perhaps she could find something her daughter could use and keep her promise to mind the store.
"Barley, 'ow about we make ze deal, oui?" she smiled and winked, "I need to go get zome new tabell clothez, Kit though grape gelly was ze anzear to a new rezipe. Eef you can watch ze ztore like a good girl, I weel buy you zmall brewing kit zat you can uze en your room. Zat way you non 'ave to be 'aveng ze keetchen zo much."

Barley closed her eyes at the little kiss and snuggled herself closer to her mother, just listening to her words. She peeked open one eye when her mother started talking about a deal. She still trusted her to after the shop? Perking up a bit more, her ears up to listen very closely.
A brewing kit?! Her whole body vibrated with excitement. "Deal! Deal! I promise I won't take my eyes off the store floor once!" The incentive wasn't really needed, not after being caught, but it certainly put a fire under the her tail to not just do her best, but to never ever let her loyalty be waver from any promise to be made.

Bon Appetit chuckled and kissed her forehead again and nodded. "Zen we 'ave ze deal. I weel go out now. Put away ze groceariez and I weel be back to check on you." The mare knew she wouldn't have to tell Barley where everything went but she was pretty sure the store would have some of the best customer service it ever had. She walked towards the door and looked back over her shoulder.
"Be a good gurl, I weel be back," she chuckled and left. First to the home and bath store......then to a hardware store to order the distillery. She had no doubt her daughter would behave herself now.

"Yes, mama!" Barley quickly, but carefully put everything in its rightful place before planting herself behind the counter, grinning widely at her mother. While her mind wonder here and there about all the things she could do with the brewing kit, she also concentrated in making up for her lapse in judgement. She would clean the glass of the displays, and the floors, and never ever break her mama's trust again. She'll be loyal to the end.
