Candy Dandy was on a mission today. While her mother was out delivering her baked goods, her young daughter was busy busy, pencil in mouth. She was designing a few new baskets that she wanted to try, and with the extra pan of cookies her mother had made, she was sure that this time, they were going to be great!

She put the pencil down with a sigh, holding up her artwork. The baskets had low handles, with ribbons on the front and fruit butterflies filling the inside, along with the flower shaped cookies to add a nice sweet touch to it. She hummed to herself, making a quick list on the back of the paper of ingredients that she would need before setting off to the market with her allowance in a bag around her neck. This was the way she usually spent her money, the exception being sweets for herself every now and again. The bright haired filly reached the market, and began to fill her saddle bags with strawberries, a couple small melons and blueberries. These were going to be the best baskets ever!

It was a gorgeous day, and Sunny Delight was ready to make the most of it! Not that she had a particular plan or anything. She didn't need a reason to be outside having fun, did she? Of course not! Nor did she need an idea of what she was going to do. The whole world was her oyster! Mmm, oysters. Sunny's stomach rumbled, and she wished she'd brought some food with her on this little outing. Lunch had been an entire hour ago!

So now she had a destination in mind: the market. Sunny skipped along, slowing down as she got close. She had a little bit of her allowance with her, but not enough to buy something big and fancy. She would need to be careful with how she spent her money if she was going to feed herself properly.

Spotting another filly nearby, Sunny ambled over, looking at the stalls she was shopping at. "Wow, that's a lot of fruit! Are you making a fruit salad or something?" And, more importantly, would there be enough to share?

Her saddle bags were beginning to overflow when she was approached by a bright yellow pegasus filly. She seemed to be sunny and bright, and Candy smiled.

"Close! I am actually making some edible flower arrangements for some friends of mine!" She finished paying for her last fruit bag and placed it on her back. Being a unicorn would be helpful in these situations. But as her mother learned to balance ingredients, so would Candy!

"You know, a fruit salad with the extras might be a pretty good after construction snack!" she added, hoof to her chin. She looked back to the bright filly, and said "My name is Candy Dandy by the way. What's yours?"

"Edible... flowers?" Sunny frowned as she tried to imagine it. "I thought we're not supposed to eat flowers. And if you're eating flowers, how come you've got all that fruit?" All that fruit that she really wanted to share, because it looked yummy. Flowers, on the other hand... She decided to ask Midnight about it later on. He knew all sorts of things about weird food!

In the meantime, she could ask this person, who she already decided was her new friend. "My name's Sunny Delight! You can call me Sunny, or Sunny-D, or SunSun, or, well, anything you want! Can I call you Candy? CanCan? No, Candy's better, I think."

That was fun, but a bit off-topic. "Do you need help with, um, construction?" Whatever that meant, it sounded like fun. And if fruit salad was involved, Sunny was so there.

Candy giggled, trying not to fall over and drop all of her things.

"No silly filly!" She said, chuckling. "I make flowers out of fruit! And then I put them in baskets. She readjusted her bags, then said "You can call me whatever you like. And you are more than welcome to help!"

Candy Dandy had never had a helper with her arrangements before. She had a way of doing things, and sometimes helpers didn't dothings the same way. But the pink filly figured that Sunny seemed to be a nice friend.

"C'mon!" She said, trotting toward the house that she shared with her family. The kitchen was empty of life, and Candy dumped out her bags all over the counter, counting how much of each fruit she had.

Making flowers out of fruit sounded pretty AND yummy AND pretty yummy, so Sunny was instantly sold. And baskets? Baskets were... basketty? Okay, so she didn't have much of an opinion on that part- yet- but the yummy and pretty fruit flowers sounded amazing, and so it was with great excitement that she followed her brand new friend.

Giving Sunny license to call you whatever she liked was dangerous. She could nickname people all day, and had already come up with two dozen nicknames just for herself- though admittedly, her brothers and sisters had helped with a few of those. The wheels turned in her head as she thought about the possibilities. One of her favorite tricks, rhyming, would be difficult, since Candy Dandy already rhymed! And she couldn't think of anything else that rhymed with it. This would take some work.

By the time they had gotten to the other filly's house, she'd only thought up one other nickname, and she didn't like it much. So, she would have to keep it simple. For now. "You've got a great house, Candy!" she said, looking around at the bright kitchen. "Okay, I'm ready! What can I do to help?"

Candy grinned, pleased with her mom's kitchen. It really was nice, wasn't it? She picked up a cookie and stared at it for almost a full minute, hoof to her chin while she thought. She then suddenly put the cookie down and staryed to dig through drawers, finally locating a flower shaped cookie cutter. She gave it to Sunny and said "Alright, you take this and cut flowers out of these cookies on that pan. Then you can take some frosting over here and put a circle in the middle. I am going to cut out butterfly wings frkm apple slices!" Candy was very excited. This was the first time she was making a basket with someone else!

The pink haired filly took her place a little ways away from Sunny, using a knife to carefully cut the apples into slices beforemaking the ends rounded.

Cookies AND fruit? Sunny was in heaven! It took her a few minutes to actually parse the instructions she was given, since she was more interested in looking at all the yummy things on the table. At that particular moment, she didn't really care about how anything looked, other than edible and delicious. If it was up to her, she would have dug in then and there.

But it wasn't up to her. She'd offered to help, and she took that very seriously. Besides, the food would be even better after it was all prettied up. So Sunny took the cookie cutter and jabbed it into the closest cookie on the pan. It was off center, so she really only got about three quarters of a flower, and the edges were crumbly. Hm.

Maybe this called for a more delicate touch. Unfortunately, delicacy was not Sunny's strong suit. The next cookie was closer to the center, but she applied too much force and ripped a petal off. The one after that ended up kind of flattened when she put all her weight on the cutter. And so on down the tray, trying different things and mangling each cookie in a different way.

And then they were done, and it was time for the frosting. Sunny looked at the container it was in. There was no knife or spoon or anything to spread it with, and she knew better than to use her bare hooves. "Caaaaaaandy," she said, leaning over to see what the other filly was doing. "What should I use to put the frosting on?"

Candy looked over from where she was laying out apple slices. Sunny seemed to be having trouble with cutting out the flowers; most of them looked off in some way. But she bit the inside of her cheek. Sunny was trying her hardest right? So the cookies may look a little...of, but Moth-Drop would love her basket just the same.

She hoped.

When Sunny indicated that she was ready to move on, Candy Dandy brought a bag with the end cut off of it and a spoon. She scooped some frosting into the bag and took the first cookie near her, saying "Ok, you take the bag and squeeze it just a little bit..." She applied pressure with her hooves, and a small ribbon of frosting came out, creating a round center in the middle of the flower. She smiled, and gave the bag to Sunny.

"If you want, you can color the petals too. Just do it the same way as the center!" Candy smiled, though in her mind she was worried about Sunny's ability to control the frosting.

Sunny watched, eyes wide, as Candy Dandy showed her how to use the frosting bag. That had to be one of the coolest things she'd ever seen. No wonder there wasn't any kind of spreader in the frosting bowl! Who needed one, when you could squirt it wherever you need it instead? Candy made it look so easy, and by the time the demonstration was done she was absolutely itching to try it herself.

"Okay, here I go!" She was so eager to get to work that the advice about squeezing "just a little bit" didn't quite register in her mind. The point of the bag bulged, and then splurted icing out in a blob bigger than the cookie she was supposed to be painting.

"Oops..." While Sunny was far from an expert in this, even she was beginning to sense that something was off about her flowers, since they didn't really look like flowers at all. "Hang on, I'll do it better this time!" And she did, somewhat. At least, the resulting blob of frosting was smaller than the cookie. It was even round! It was also almost an inch high, which made the whole thing look even more lopsided than it had before. It was still progress, though, and Sunny took that as encouragement to keep trying, accidentally covering some cookies with uneven stripes as she struggled to control the flow of frosting, making uneven centers that spilled onto the petals or the tray below.

For better or worse, her tight grip on the bag meant running out of frosting before she had finished all the cookies. Half of them were (mostly) blank, while the rest were speckled or striped or buried under mounts of the sugary substance. A tired, uncertain, and similarly frosting-covered Sunny turned to Candy Dandy. "So... how do they look?"

Oh dear....

Sunny's enthusiasm was higher than her artistic skill. The misshaped cookies were now covered in globs of frosting, and the whole thing looked a mess. There was a stack of cookies that hadnt even gotten any frosting, and Candy wondered whaton earth she was going to cover them with.

Oh dear.

Candy felt a pit grow in her stomach. This wss supposed to be a present for hrr friend, and Sunny was messing it all up! But she shouldn't tell her that they looked awful..she was trying her best..maybe she could just give a few pointers..

No, let Sunny do her thing.

"They look...great!" Candy said, poking at one that was particularly messy. "The ones with lots of frosting we can just smooth it out. As for these..." she indicated the other unfrosted cookies, "maybe we can just dip them in chocolate. Yeah that would look cool!"

She found some bakers chocolate and melted it, placing the pot on the counter.

"Be careful cuz its hot. Now just dip maybe half into the pot, and then let it drip off before you put it back on the tray okeydokey?" Hopefully Sunny would be much better and she wouldn't have to lie about how they looked nice.

"They do? Really?" And just like that, whatever uncertainty Sunny had about this activity dissipated. Candy Dandy was totally a master at this! If a master told her she was doing a good job, then she had to be. Even if the results weren't exactly what she had expected them to be. Imagining her creations as any kind of floral arrangement was really hard. She closed her eyes and scrunched her face as she tried, then shook her head. Just because she couldn't see it didn't mean it wouldn't happen!

And for it to happen, there was more work to be done. Sunny watched as the chocolate in the pot slowly melted, and had to restrain herself from dipping one of her hooves in to taste it. Instead, she took one cookie and carefully, slowly dipped it into the pot.

"There!" As soon as she thought she'd done it right, her grip slipped, and she dropped the cookie into the pot. "Oh! Wait, how can I get it out?" She looked around for a spoon, or tongs, or a fishing pole- anything that would retrieve the now totally-drenched cookie from the sea of chocolate into which it had fallen.

Candy Dandy facehoofed, though she tried to make sure Sunny didn't see. Oh dear...

"Hold on, I'll get a fork." she said, dashing to the drawer to remove the three pronged utensil. She fished the cookie out. It was mushy; the chocolate had soaked in a bit, making it droop sadly. She placed it on the tray, and the chocolate oozed out to create a misshaped ring around the flower. Candy sighed, but put on a smile. "That was..good for a first try! Maybe practice just a bit more." she said, handing the fork to Sunny.

"And here is this, just in case." Her frustration was cleverly hidden, but starting to bubble. At this rate, Moth-Drop's basket would never be done!

Candy chose to bury herself in arranging the whole fruits in the base of the basket. These were where the flowers would stick in.
PostPosted: Wed May 01, 2013 9:36 pm

Whatever frustration Candy Dandy was feeling went completely over Sunny's head. She took the words at face value, and beamed. "Thanks! I'm sure I'll do even better this time." Making food was a lot harder than eating it was, but she was having a blast trying. She took another cookie, and carefully dipped it into the chocolate, keeping the fork at the ready just in case. Then, she pulled it out equally slowly. About two thirds of the cookie were coated in chocolate, the rest was clean.

"Look, I did it!" Completely forgetting to let the cookie drip in the pot, Sunny dropped it onto the tray, where it splattered other nearby cookies. She hadn't expected it to do that, but the tiny dots it had left on them actually looked kind of cool! "Okay, I think I'm getting the hang of it! This is super fun- maybe I can help you again, after we finish this one!"

She turned just in time to see the cookie splatter on the tray, and the chocolate seemed to fall in slow motion all over the other cookies. As the chocolate hit the frosting, something in her snapped. Sunny was ruining everything!

"You're doing it wrong!" She yelled, running over to the cookies and sliding them away from Sunny. "You have to be careful, or the cookies will be a mess!" Candy looked at the cookies forlornly. Oh how was she going to fix these?

Now I am going to start all over!" the pink filly sighed in annoyance, staring at her mostly empty basket.
