It was sunrise. The air was cold, the sun making her fur prickle and rise towards.

Asami's heart was beating more slowly than it had before in her entire life. The huge, golden sun peeking over the red dunes took her breath entirely away. It had been several months since she had left home.

No, not home.

Home had been the swamp, the mud. Then it had become the dust beneath her feet. Now, home was an ache deep in her heart. She had waited her whole life to take her pilgrimage. In a blink of an eye, that had been snatched from her. She swallowed, remembering the conversation she and her mother had.

Asami had found the outpost tired, thirsty, and looking for solace. Miraculously, they had given it to her. When they'd asked her if she was on her way to the Firekin, she had simply answered, "Yeah. There," in hopes that they would leave her alone long enough to recover. They did.

When she'd been woken later by the sounds of fighting, she had been alarmed. It did not take her long to see the fights were not deadly, and that no blood was being spilled. It was like the over-agressive play of cubs. She'd watched, for a few days, making good use of their leftover scraps of meat and drinking her fill of water. This land was like the swamps after they had burned -- only no ash hit the ground.

Then, she had tried her hand. The first time someone had struck her upside the head, Asami had stumbled backwards and sat down. Thankfully, there had been what the pride called a medic on scene. There was no official word for a healer in the Swamplands. Those who held knowledge of plants passed it carefully down to their children. At times, the spirits were called upon. Secrets were shared and debated against one another.

The practiced, efficient work of the medic had awed her, and like any Swampie, she always sought more knowledge where it was to be had. Perhaps it would lead to her name.

It was a self-challenge now. Could she defeat one of the Firekin? It had started as simply a little thought, itching at the back of her mind. Now, she was excited to try it. The beasts themselves had given her no end to their drabble in military prowess, and Asami wanted to try it just once before she continued on her naming quest.

"Just once," she told the sands.

Then, she broke into a jog and struggled through the thick sand to a figure she had been sent to meet.

"Ser!" she called out, using a formal term left to her from the swamplands. "We're dueling, right?" Asami was already panting, and there was a happy smile displaying her teeth. My goodness, what if she actually won?

She moved from foot to foot as she fidgeted.

It was not technically part of his job, yet Isifo felt an obligation to it anyway.

A Hongshan who spoke common tongue had been present went they were searching for a challenger for one of the new rogues. As the young adolescent had been at the outpost, Isifo knew from which direction the young lioness would be arriving.

He had sat down to wait, then laid down to wait. Eventually, her red form appeared. Slow.

"Asami, yes?" his grunting voiced inquired.

When she gave her affirmation, Isifo squared himself up. He was a terribly stiff fighter, and had several tells that made him very easy to beat in combat. However, he was a hard hitter, and his blows made up for his clumsiness.

"You. First."

"Right."

Asami swallowed. Left foot, right foot. Back and forth. Finally, she took in a deep breath and calmed.

You have to fight him.

Isifo was no tiny lion. No, he wasn't the largest of Firekin, but Asami was an adolescent, and had never been a brutish lioness to begin with. To her, Isifo may as well have been a bruiser.

She almost asked him if he could go first, but she found a spark of something and marched forward.

Isifo had engaged in a few joining duels before. They were fast, wrung his ears, and made him not want to go to dueling practice. He hated the feeling of having his ears rung.

When the lioness came marching towards him, he swayed on his feet. Everything in her posture was bizarre. He was unsure if she was going to attack him or invite her to share a meal.

He spun on his back legs to follow her, but was still left swatting at the air as she attempted a swipe to his side. Maybe she would have been successful if she hadn't leapt back so quickly afterwards!

Asami nearly lost her balance as the sand sunk beneath her paws. When would she get used to this?

The lioness stumbled and broke into a jog, paddling against the loose earth with panic on her face. Isifo swiped at her again, and she twisted her body, contorting her belly inward until the strike barely grazed her flesh.

Letting out a small sound of surprise, she leapt towards him, hoping to score a hit on his flank.

It placed Asami directly into the path of Isifo's paws.

It came down hard on her back, and the small adolescent's feet buckled beneath her.

Wheezing gently, she scrambled forwards, following the rotation of Isifo's rump as he spun to better face her.

Unfortunately, now her vulnerable backside was exposed. Panicking, Asami threw her weight forwards and Isifo took a heavy pair of paws to the face.

It was enough force to cut his muzzle against his canine.

The soldier reeled backwards, tongue sliding along the injury. There was definitely blood.

He shook his head, trying to get rid of the sensation.

An opening!

Asami knew it as soon as she saw it. All her training at the outpost really did serve her well.

The small adolescent was reacting before she'd even fully assessed just how good of an opening it was. Just as she was trained, she brought one paw down on the right side and used the momentum to carry over with a hit to the left side.

Hah!

It was like a bad cat-fight.

Asami was attempting to smack him, and so Isifo simply hit back. She managed to put in two or three hits for every one he delivered.

Under his heavy paws, she wobbled and wavered, but somehow held her footing.

Somewhere in it, she'd nearly bit her tongue in half--clench your jaw, Asami!--and still managed to keep going.

She wiggled and veered and struck at him again. There would be no wrestling here. Just a bunch of fancy footwork.

It was Isifo's turn to back off, scowling and grumbling. The small one's paws were not heavy, but they were fast.

Already, she had shown herself capable. No, she would hardly be the best fighter the Firekin had to offer, but she could pass. She wasn't going to keel over and die.

Painfully, Isifo avoided the last of the little smacks.

"Stop!" He had not wanted to use the word, but she had been coming after her again.

Asami blinked and slammed on the breaks. For a long moment, she did not even register was Isifo had said.

She stared at him.

Had she done something wrong? The red lioness glanced to her left and then took a few steps back.

"What is it?"
