One step, two step, right step, and there. Crouching low she saw the hard oval red berry. Miracle berries. They were supposed to switch the tastes of what you ate. Made sour things sweet, spicy stuff not tongue numbing. For other kin, this was hardly an adventure but different strokes for different folks. For Faint, this was living dangerously enough. Poised and ready, she extended her neck and pulled back her teeth to snap the berry off its stalk.

"You don't want to eat that." A gruff voice says. Mugwort steps onto the path, his eyes on the doe and the deadly fruit she is about to pluck. On his shoulder a mongoose chitters in annoyance, even this little creature knows to avoid that particular berry. "Unless you intend to see the afterlife firsthoof." He adds, voice dripping in sarcasm. He gives her a scalding look before turning back into Sorr's garden.
Bad enough that there is yet another stranger so close to his sister's territory, but that he has to save this one too? Doesn't the doe know anything at all? If you are unsure about the fruit simply do not eat it, there are too many poisonous fruits and plants in the swamp. To go about eating things you have no knowledge about is too risky. Unless she seeks that thrill that comes before such a dangerous move, Mug thinks to himself. At this thought he turns and gives the doe another scathing look, curiosity mixed in as well.

At the interruption, she turns her head and looks sideways at the buck before recanting and flinching, her rushing forward to hide her shame. Even the mongoose was scolding her. The withering looks root her to the ground.
After a few false starts and hasty inhales she stammers out, "I thought these were miracle berries. You know" she pauses before continuing "the ones that switch your tastebuds around? Right?" She was itching to just be anywhere but there. Maybe her adventureseeking wasn't a good idea afterall.

"If you don't know what something is don't eat it. Next time, ask someone to show you the fruit first." Mug replies, sounding rather irritated. This should be common sense, unless she has none.
Shaking his head Mug walks off down the path, taking several turns. "Over here!" He shouts. "This is the fruit you want." He says, pointing at a similar berry, the only difference being in berry size, these are slightly bigger, and the leaves being broader and a darker green. "Going by description only can lead to disaster." Mug says with a shake of his head.
Pansy jumps from his shoulder and skitters over to the plants, plucking a few berries before running off to enjoy them in privacy.

She was ashamed, but she had pride.Straightening up from her wilted pose she sticks out her chest defiantly. "You are a jackass!" she declares before deflating a little. This was living perilously on the edge, her heartbeat races nonstop. Will it explode? This might be more of an adventure she bargained for. What if this buck was a killer? One of those rampant soul stealing kin of the swamp? Noticing her distress, Hailstone jumps out in front of his kin, defending her honor. Except the stick was quite small and he himself was petite. Still, together, they stare down the pink buck.

Mug's cheeks flush a deeper pink at the doe's words. She's right, stranger or not, even stupid or not, he had no right to be such an a** about what was a simple mistake. "My apologies." he says, giving the smallest of bows.
Now that he actually looks at her Mug sees she is attractive, and female. So no worries on his dearest sister getting pregnant again. Maybe this stranger won't be so bad? At least to stay for a meal, after all he should give more then words to make amends. That is, if she even wants him to. "This patch of the garden is full of good things to eat, Sorr just asks that you don't graze anything to the ground. She likes the plants to replenish themselves when possible." He offers, flicking his tail to encompass a vast area of flora.
"I'd avoid that section, though." He adds, nodding to a patch sectioned off with various stones. "Unless you like waking dreams." Mug looks at her, wondering if - like Sorrel - this doe enjoys ingesting such foods. He side steps, giving her room to follow the path.

This chapter of adventure just got scarier. Or more delightful. Faint wasn't sure on which yet. The pink one apologized and was now trying to feed her. OK, he wasn't a killer. Or one of the freaky swamp ghost monsters. How quaint. Looking at her little knight she sniffs delicately. "I'll forgive your rudeness if you show me and my jerboa what to eat. I'm unfamiliar with most floral and fauna."
Yes, make him work a little.
"No waking dreams or mushrooms, please!" she adds as an aside.

He nods, thinking. Sorr usually goes for the sweetest first, but he'd offer some choices. "These.." Mug points out some colorful apple shaped berries. "..are sweet, except the green ones, they are tart. Their leaves are bitter, but when eaten with the berries it makes an interesting taste."
Walking a few feet down the path, Mug indicates a flowering bush. "The leaves on this one are mild, but the flowers are minty. The fruits have a sweet outside and are more sour closer to the seed."
He looks around, realizing that for all his time spent in the garden he has very little clue about the plants. Mostly he eats meat, and what plants and such Sorr mixes with it. "Ah!" He exclaims, catching as plant he knows. "The leaves and stems on this one are a salty-sweet." Mug states, pointing out a third plant. "Most of the edible plants here are sweet, sometimes sickeningly so. I try to avoid them, unless they are a side to fish or game." He explains his lack of knowledge.

"I would like to try them" she states meaningfully. "Especially the miracle berries. We could eat the food first, I don't graze, then eat them after ingesting miracle berries."

Mug watches her, looking confused and slightly worried. Not about her seeming to want him to gather her food for her, but about the miracle berries. "I don't know which ones those are.." He states, cheeks once again flushing a deeper pink. "My sister's garden contains several berries that look similar, but I never payed much attention to which plant she gathers them from."
He gives a shrug and heads down a side path, coming back a few moments later with two turtle shells. He sets them down and starts gathering berries, all oval and red, and placing them in one shell. "You can take a guess, I suppose." He says, then goes about filling the second shell with fruits, leaves and even some small roots. "Anything specific you want me to add?" He asks.

The sheer amount of what he was gathering embarrassed her. She didn't think he would go to such an extreme extent. She helped herself to his sister's garden, mindful to clip at the tip as to not ruin the roots or structure of the plant. She gathered her own berries and placed them on his pile among the turtle shells.
Alright. This was going to be a blind tasting. Okay.
"Well, thanks for gathering this all. Should we have our familiars try it out first? No. Let's go on this adventure" her voice had a bit more steel and fevered pitch this time. She was getting excited. Apprehension of a new adventure goading her on.

"I've tasted most of the edible plants here, I just don't know what they are called." Mug says, smiling at her excitement. "A lot of the fruits are very sweet, some of them too sweet. If you ask me." He adds, in a slightly grumpy voice. He'd been trying to get Sorr to add more sour and spicy foliage, but she's refused to add more then a few of each plant type. Unless its a sweet plant.
Plucking a plum from the shell he takes it to her. "This one's a nice blend of sweet and tart." Mug says after setting it down for her. Then he gets an idea. "You say this miracle berry changes flavors? So sour would be sweet? Or does it only work with spicy foods?" Maybe that's how he could get more then just sweet things into his sister's garden.

Grumpy tones amused her. So this buck was surly and liked sour things. Good, good. And his interest in miracle berries to please his sour-liked tastebuds made her happy. They can be like two peas in a pod, forever venturing for opposite tasting foods. Or at least friends for this evening. Like wildfire, the zeal he had for miracle berries intensified her own search for them. With a flourish she started picking up different fruits. She coaxed some honey onto a stick and placed it on the turtle. She found some mushrooms and prayed to MotherFather these were the benign types. She rounded up some nuts and last but not leash, she went and got some bark. It was good to have some control of this experiment. And should bark be edible and tasty, now that... that would blow her mind.
And a 1, 2 and 3 "Are you ready?" Hailstone ran off with a berry.

Mug watches her gather more foods, frowning when she gathers the mushrooms. Walking over he bends over to examine them. "Good selection you have there." He says, a bit amazed she managed to miss all the types that give waking dreams. Sorr always has plenty of those types around, which annoys Mug. Not that she has them, but that the only care she takes with where mushrooms grow is to keep the edible and poisonous separate. He's always saying she should divide the safe ones from the ones that cause waking dreams, too. Especially since Sorr allows anykin to graze in her garden.
"Always ready for food." Mug states, going back to his shell and smiling at her. "So, how do we figure out which berry is the one you want?" Mug asks. "Should we try a a bite of fruit, then a berry and then another bite of fruit to see if the flavor changed?" Given the number of berries that resemble this miracle berry Mug thinks this might be the best way to find it.

She didn't need to be asked twice. She devoured some berries, juices dripping down her mouth like she was frothing blood. But she payed it no mind. She bit into a lemon. Yuck. Sour. Too sour. She did not want to suffer that fate again. She pushed the lemon firmly over to the other buck's turtleshell. Argh, the sourness was really hurting her mouth. Quickly, she bit into what he called a 'plum' and the sour tide abated.
Hmmm, "Alright, your turn. That berry was sooo not the Mircle berry we were looking for." Her stomach grumbled in assent.
