Ah!

Dainty Delta took in a deep breath, taking in all the scents of the wonderful fall foliage. Mums were blossoming and pumpkin vines were coiling, and the trees were turning gold and red. She smiled to herself as she strolled about the flowered area of the park, her cheeks bright in the crisp air. Ah! Did she love anything more than fall? It could almost make a phony sing!

Delta opened her mouth, but immediately clamped it back shut again. She wasn't alone in the park -- someone would surely hear her! No, no. It would be better to just find a nice place to settle down and start work on the little sweater she was planning for herself.

User ImageAlso walking through the flower garden was phonyland's future Bard, a venerable Bead in the making! Or so he thought. The candy apple red colt troted about in the most distinguished manner, taking in all the sights nature had to offer. Surely there was no other better inspiration than nature! The vivid colors that bring to mind the passion of the soul! Poet Lariat, affectionally called Larry by his twin sister and adoptive fateher, walked among the autumn blooms until nearly running into a green filly.

"Oh! Do pardon me madam! I did not expect to find another enjoying nature's wonders," he gave her a soft bow. "I am Poet Lariat, the future bard of this land. Who might you be?"

Oof! Delta was just about to take out her yarn when suddenly someone came very close, a red and wheat-colored blur that matched nearly perfectly with the autumnal surroundings. Delta jumped prematurely, startled, her hooves dancing daintily on the ground. She blinked as she settled, and found herself looking at a rather handsome colt.

"O-oh..." was all she could say as he began to speak, his words only half-intelligible to her still-startled mind. He had such a lovely turn of phrase, but she could only understand part of it! Delta gathered a breath, wondering if she was meant to answer in the same type of language. "Oh, goodness, hello, uhm... Mister... Lariat... sirmister. I doth... am... Dainty Delta. It is a pleasure?"

Was... was that right? It didn't feel right.

Larry nodded to the green filly, a lovely shade as well; like the last leaves of the season reminding those falling into winter's slumber of the warm joys they had to look forward too in the coming spring. As she spoke he realized he must have startled her, given her broken speach.

"Ah forgive me my lady! It seems I have given you a start! I was merely enraptured by nature's bounty and the beauty that inspires my soul!" he placed a hoof on his chest, "For I am nature's voice, her voice speaks to me and I transfer her gentle tones into the written word for all to enjoy!"

Yeah he really didn't know what he was saying. He read it once in a book and it sounded fancy. If nothing else Larry desired to be the fanciest gentleman around. His father was highly sought after by the mares of the park and he wished for such affections. So he thought being fancy and using big words might help.

"Do tell me, for my curiousity is ever hungry; what brings you to this lovely spot?"

Delta stared at the foal, slowly blinking her long lashes over her confused eyes. Poet Lariat seemed friendly -- very friendly -- and so polite, but his words made her feel a little dizzy. Although Delta loved to read, she had never cultivated a love of poetry, and simply never indulged in reading anything of the sort. No love ballads, no funny limericks: nothing had ever been introduced to the filly before.

He ... apologized? And, what was the rest of it? He was very fond of something, by the look of the hoof on his chest... he was meeting someone at the park? No -- he was talking about nature? But who was the 'she'? Delta flushed. Her mind, rushing to keep up, only barely managed to filter through that Poet Lariat was asking something of her at the end.

"You -- you're hungry?" she squeaked. "I have a spare apple if you'd like... I was just thinking about sitting here and knitting something. Do, uhm, you know how to knit?"

Poet was completely ignorant of the fact that poor Delta had no idea what he was saying half the time. But it made him feel fancy, and that was all that matters. Perhaps she would feel fancy too. At her offer of food Larry felt his stomach give comment on the matter, yes he was hungry and had not seen fit to pack himself a snack.

"My dear your kindness is to be admired. I would love to partake of refreshments with you!" he smiled and settled down to where she was sitting. When asked of this knitting he shook his head.

"Sadly no, a common feminine hobby is not to my taste. Though," he glanced around, "do not let those words fall upon my sister's ear. For though I am her sibling she would most likely cuff me fiercely for saying so!" Oh yes, he feared his sister's wrath, she was worse than any villian. Most women were if they were evil. Not that he thought C.C. was evil.

"However I am a creator, though it is not of fashion. I am a poet! A creater of dreams through prose and rhyme."

Poet Lariat sat down, which Delta took to mean he took her up on her apple offer. She was glad of it; although she knew most of the words Poet Lariat were saying ('partake', though, she missed), the manner and flourish of the foal's speech twisted even the vocabulary she knew well. She nodded, and her horn glowed dimly as an apple floated out of her saddlebag and toward the fancy foal beside her.

She looked a tad crestfallen as he admitted he didn't know how to knit. He seemed to have no interest in it, either, and seemed to be swearing her to secrecy on that count. Delta blinked. It wasn't a bad thing, not wanting to knit! It was a difficult skill to master, and everyphony couldn't do everything, after all, right?

"Your, uhm, sister would get mad..?" Delta tried to clarify, swallowing. "I-- it's okay! It seems like you really like, uhm..." She faltered. What had he just said? "... dreams through prose and rhyme."

"Ah! You are a unicorn. Your beauty blinded me to seeing your horn!" he smiled and gave her a wink before accepting the apple and taking a bite. He was polite, finishing his bite before speaking again. "My father is a unicorn as well! I have oft wondered what it would be like to have such mystical abilities!"

At the mention of his sister he nodded gravely, "Oh yes! My sister does not like me to berate or assign things to the feminine nature. Despite it's obvious qualities to the gender. It makes her name, Cootie Canoodle, rather appropriate." He took a few more bites from his apple.

At the mention of his love he grew almost stary eyed, "Yes! My heart's passion is to become the world's next great poet and playwrite! Just like the Master Bard himself, Shakesphere!"

Delta blushed deeply. She understood the word beauty perfectly well, and fidgeted slightly, her gaze dropping delicately, unused to being praised. She recovered herself in time to give a soft-worded response: "Oh, it's... it's really nothing..."

She squeaked softly at the mention of C.C. Her friend! The heroic filly, the one who had lent her the books! Delta turned toward Poet Lariat, her eyes open a little wider now, seeing the foal in a whole new light. Of course! How had she missed it before? They looked so much alike. "C.C. is your sister? Ohmygosh, ohmygosh... she's -- she's so very sweet!" She drew in a gentle breath, smiling. "She's just lovely."

But she wasn't entirely sure Poet Lariat was listening, the way his eyes went all distant and yearning. The word's next great poet? He certainly talked like one. Delta tried her best to seem like she understood. What was a Bard?

"Oh, that sounds very nice," she said sweetly. "I'm sure you'll make a great, uhm, bard."

Larry smiled as the girl blushed, a soft smile of understanding and a bit of flirting. After all his father always made girls blush in the good way. Or at least that's what he observed. And he never seemed to really try. Must be a unicorn power or something.

The filly mentioned his sister, even calling her by her nickname. Ah! A friend of his sister's. Most likely filled with her ideas of heroism and fantasy. "Yes, she is my twin. We share similar cutie marks too!" He presented his rump which was already decorated with kissie marks, opposite colored from C.C.'s. Unlike most foals he already had his.

"Ah thank you. It is a large responsibility but one I plan on achieving. Tell meh, what do you plan with your future? What shall be your occupation?"

They were twins, even! It seemed so obvious now; the coloring, the cutie marks, the features... she was amazed at herself for neglecting to notice something so obvious. But then again, the two were so different! C.C. had been so instructive, so easy to understand. But then, they were both so passionate about what they wanted, and they both seemed to know themselves so well! Maybe that's why they both had their cutie marks already.

"It's a lovely cutie mark," said Delta in a gracious tone, admiring the mark momentarily. She was disarmed by the next question, though, which was easy to understand and devoid of the foal's usual flourish. There was no escaping this one. She was just going to have to tell the truth.

The not so pretty truth. "But as for, uhm, my own future, I don't really know yet! I'm still a blank-flank... My family, we're really good at math? " And kissing, although she didn't mention her father's particular talents. "Maybe it'll be something to do with that."

She looked down momentarily, drawing in a breath for courage. "I, uhm, really admire that about you and C.C., though. It -- it must be really nice to be so passionate about something you love to do."

Larry gave her an appraising look as she spoke of dealing with numbers, she did not look the kind to have such a mind. Not that he thought her unintelligent! She merely seemed a woman of technical skill rather than mental. Her comment about his and C.C.'s passion made him smile.

"My dear Delta. One should not consider one's family a basis for one's future! Should that be so then my sibling and I would pursue a more agricultural persuit as our father is one with nature," he held up a hoof as he spoke since it always indicated something important in the shows he watched. "One's heart is what one should follow! If in your heart your desire does not follow that of numbers and equations but of a more..." he looked down at her knitting then back up "...textile and industry then you should do that!"

Was that even a word? Now Larry was unsure he was saying the right words to express himself. He knew lots of big words but didn't always know if he was using them in the correct way. But he was too nervous to admit if he might be wrong. Plus he wanted to seem more refined and intelligent, phonies used big words to do that.

Delta nodded, trying her hardest to keep up at Larry's speech took on its usual flourish once more. How on earth did he learn to speak like that? Was it simply his talent? Or -- no, that couldn't be it. His cutie mark wasn't a dictionary, after all! She looked up at him with something like wonder on her face, finally understanding when he took a glance down at her knitting just what he meant.

"Oh, ah, this? Thank you so much for saying so, but, oh, gosh, this is just a hobby... and I work at it all time time! I don't know if it's really a talent..." She paused, a shy sort of smile creeping up on her face, and lowered her eyes demurely. Her politeness told her that her next statement was out of the question, but Delta had to know! "Mister Lariat, I hope you don't think me rude, but where did you learn to talk so, ah... poetically?"

A blush colored her cheeks, but she had been honest with him so far and intended to continue that way. " I - I ... I can't ... always follow it... Oh! But it sounds very beautiful!" She laughed, a touch embarrassed, and looked up at him again.

Larry shook his head and pointed at her knitting as he spoke. He would not hear of such a thing. The filly obviously had talent or she wouldn't cotinue with her work. "A hobby, Ms. Delta, is something we take up because we have a passion for it. And passion is what drives our lives. It makes us who we are, so do not dismiss it."

At her question even Larry blushed a bit, though it was hard to see give his red coloring. He felt guilty all of a sudden, having spoken in ways the filly could not understand. He thought everyone understood him, or at least they always said they did. Had they been lying? Well....perhaps he needed to be a bit honest with himself about his speach.

"Well my lady I....I well learned it from books. My fathers books to be specific. He has a grand collection of romance novels, set in different past ages," he shuffled his hooves a bit. "I admit though...I....do not always know if I am using them properly. I apologize if I have confused you in any way. I just....want to speak as beautifully as the words I read."

Delta's smile grew slightly, as did her blush. The foal's entire demeanor made her want to give him a hug, although her natural delicacy forbade the very notion of initiating sudden physical contact. She hadn't meant to embarrass him, but his intentions were so pure and so... so cute.

"Oh, you are really sweet to say such things..." said Delta, nodding to her knitting. "And you have to know, really, I think you sound just, uhm..." She tried to think of a better word than just 'beautiful'. "... just... engaging! And, ah... melodious. And, uhm, even if I couldn't understand it all at first, it was a very nice challenge to keep up!"

She laughed her sweet, shy laugh.
"Besides, you can't become a great, ah, bard, was it? overnight. I think you're on a great path. I can't wait to read your books some day." Her smile grew encouraging.
