"Let's see..." Dainty Delta murmured to herself, her eyes up at the clear sky. It was a lovely day, cool and clear, and the filly was feeling self-indulgent. She had nowhere to be and little to do, and her head was full of lazy ideas and plans. Maybe she would start a new project today, or go over to the bookstore and buy a new book of word problems? She trotted along the way at a slow pace, not particularly checking where she was going. Phonies passed her on the road, all walking at a quicker pace than the delicate filly, who just made sure to politely let them all by.
Some fabric! Yes, she could go to the fabric store and look at all the spools of thread and endless rolls of different color -- wouldn't that be nice? Or she could take a shortcut and pass the applecart on her way there, have a snack first...
Delta slowed her gait even further to think, moving toward the side to let more decisive Phonies have the right of way. She phonywatched as she thought, letting out a contemplative: "Hmm..."

Cootie Canoodle was livid, yes, completely and utterly angry as she stomped her hooves down mercilessly on the grass besides the road, staying out of the way of other phonies. Girls needing boys to protect them! Ooooh, that colt was lucky she had some self restrained or he would had gotten a good hoof shaped bruised in his rump right now. She huffed and puffed until she was too exhausted to keep her stomping and sat, giving a dark moody look to the road.

A sudden thudding, like an approaching storm, caused Delta to wake from her reverie, her hooves all jumbling and tripping as she attempted to get out of the stomping somephony's way. It wasn't until she had finished her awkward dance that Delta realized the stomping had stopped, and that nophony had passed her by!
Blinking, she turned, and saw a furious-looking filly sitting nearby on the grass, her expression as dark and foreboding as the storm her stomping had sounded like. Delta gulped -- was the filly mad at her? They hadn't met before, but perhaps... perhaps it was because Delta had walked so slowly, taking up so much of the road?
"Uhm... e-excuse me," Delta began timidly. It wouldn't do to just leave the filly sitting there alone, not if she could apologize and make things better! "You... uhm... are you okay?"

C.C. looked broke her glare to the cobblestones to see a very timid filly speaking to her. She manage to pull her features back to a small smile, her anger subsiding a bit.
"Oh...um...yes, I am okay...just got my mane brushed the wrong way." She gave a soft giggle. "Some idiot colt speaking nonsense about fillies."

Delta relaxed visibly, the timidity melting from her face. It wasn't her the filly was mad at! It was nice to know, but all the same, the filly still seemed upset. Maybe she just needed some cheering up? Nobody liked being alone and angry, after all... Delta offered the other a small smile.
"O-oh, I'm so sorry," Delta said sweetly, taking a seat next to C.C. "I don't think we've met! I'm Dainty Delta. I hope they didn't say anything too, uhm... mean..."

"No, we haven't." C.C. crooned gently with a grin. "I am Cootie Canoodle, but most call me C.C."
Her eyes darken a bit. "No..not mean..." She got up, twitching her tail. "Just wrong and idiotic. He said fillies need colts to protect them and we certainly do not! I can take on anything a colt can and even maybe do it better. Any filly can, don't you think so?"

"C.C.!" repeated Delta, smiling a small, shy smile. "That's a lovely nickname. I... I guess I'd be D.D., but that doesn't sound nearly as fun. It's nice to meet you."
Delta did not rise as C.C. did, looking up at her new acquaintance with wide eyes. She blinked as C.C.'s words settled in, thinking about what the filly said. Did she need protecting? She certainly liked it when she had another phony around, like North, but it didn't specifically have to be a colt or a stallion... Really, she'd never considered it before! She couldn't think of a time a colt had come to her rescue, but then, she couldn't think of a time she needed rescuing, either! "Oh! Well. That's not very nice... Well -- maybe... maybe foals need protection from older phonies? But, uhm, it's not always fillies... I know plenty of crybaby colts that need just as much protecting."

"I think Delta is cute" She smiled.
"From older phonies, sure, we are just babbies, but from colts? Nope" C.C. puffed up happily at seeing her point validated by another. "Yes, plenty of crybaby colts, we are all quiet the same. No need for filly to have to be the damsel in distress. We can be heros, we can be kick a** princesses!"

"H-heroes?" Delta sounded a touch doubtful. She hadn't met any fillies that seemed like heroes! Or colts, for that matter. She flushed as she thought of the adults in her life -- maybe North? He seemed dashing enough, maybe.
Delta lifted herself to her feet, her eyes bright. Could a filly like her be a hero? It made her heart beat a little faster to think it. She could barely skip across the creek by her house without fearing she might fall in. A hero? Maybe she just wasn't cut-out for daring-dos. But C.C. seemed so fired up! She seemed to know what she was talking about. "Do you really think so? I mean, I've never seen a real hero... Are... are many fillies really heroic?"

"Yes, heros...well heroines" C.C. giggled and trotted around Delta, skipping a little bit. "Well, I never seen one, but that don't mean they don't exist! I have books filled with heroines that save the stolen prince, kill the dragons and take back the kingdom from the evil enchantress!"
She smiled. "I'll bring you one, I think you'll like them"

Delta's eyes grew wide as C.C. spoke, trying her hardest to imagine a heroine the way the filly explained. Without other imagery, all Delta could conjure up was, well... C.C.! The way the filly giggled and spoke with such passion about heroines, Delta was becoming convinced that maybe it was C.C.'s destiny to become one. She herself was far too easily started to kill any dragons.
"Wow..." Delta breathed. "That -- that sounds amazing! I'd love to read one... you'd do that for me?"

"Sure! Books are much more fun when you can share them and talk to other phonies about your favorite parts" C.C. stopped her going about and about Delta, she liked this new filly, a bit shy but very attentive. The red maned phony already selecting the perfect book, more magic and puzzles then fighting and rudeness. Witty dialogue and romantic subplots all about. Yes perfect book for a shy filly! "I'll bring it over to your stable tomorrow, if you want."

An eager smile lit all of Delta's face. She could hardly believe her luck! To have made a new friend -- such a strong-willed, courageous-sounding phony! -- and a promise of a thrilling book, to boot! It was almost too much. She took a few steps in place as she watched C.C.'s movements, her own imagination pulling up thoughts of daring quests and heroic deeds.
Only, her imagination didn't run toward the actual actions of said heroic deeds. Instead, she was imagining C.C. in heroic clothing, in a dashing cream-colored coat with lapels and scissor-coattails, a brass button to hold it closed...
"Oh, that -- that would be really too nice of you. Thank you so much!" said Dainty Delta. Her horn glowed softly as she pulled out a slip of paper and pencil. "This is where my stable is. Please... uhm... please come by any time!
Dainty Delta looked the filly over, thinking to herself that she couldn't let C.C.'s kindness go unrewarded. She -- maybe she could make her new friend a present? Delta had been looking for a new project, and what was better than making something for a new friend?

C.C. tucked the paper away and gave her an over the top dramatic bow. "I shall drop by soon and sweep you off to a new adventure!" She chirped happily with a bright smile, hoping forward and smooching her cheek before trotting off to the road. "See you then, Delta!" - - - - - -
It was three days before dear C.C. could find perfect reading material for her new timid friend. She danced happily up to the stable door, giving a rhythmic tap against it with her back hooves, her saddle bags weighted down with not one but three books. She couldn't just introduce her friend to a trilogy and leave her hanging! No, no, no, no, she'll have to have all three books available! She giggled and waited patiently to be invited in.

Delta could only flush brightly as the other filly planted a kiss on her cheek and then went away, her little voice too excited to even peep out of her throat for a proper goodbye. Instead, she just watched C.C. for an extra moment before trotting herself to the fabric store, her mind full of wild ideas and designs to repay her new friend with. - - - - - - "Justaminute!" Dainty Delta called from inside her stable, straightening just a few things before she went to answer the door. As she saw C.C. standing outside, Delta's posture lifted and a smile swept over her face. "C.C.! Come on in!"
Delta moved aside, nudging the door open to let her friend into her home. It was a lovely little house, and the entrance faced into comfortable-looking room with a dress form in one corner and a yarn cubby lining the wall. Rolls of fabrics and bundles of yarn poked out, neatly organized by color. There was a low table, with stacks of books -- workbooks, by the look of it, as well as design catalogues and instruction books. It was a cozy, lived-in, pleasant space.
Delta herself had a measuring tape resting over her shoulders, but that was the only sign that the filly had been working when C.C. knocked on the door. On the phony dress form was her project: a cream-colored coat with sharp, piped lapels and tails, all in the same eggshell shades. The stitching, however, showed a few flashes of crimson, and there was a red pocket-square in the jacket pocket. It looked, quite simply, like a prince's coat. Delta looked from the coat to C.C. shyly, unsure of when to show it to her friend.
Instead, she smiled brightly and said: "It's really nice to see you again! Can I get you anything? An apple?"
