Kindling was feeling awfully proud of herself. Not only had she managed to talk to the handsome buck she'd had her eyes on for a while, but she'd also scored. She giggled to herself and did an odd victory dance-leap across the ground. He'd been a real sweetheart too, that buck of her's.

"Well, what do you think?" She said, asking her faithful fennec's opinion. "Do you think he's a keeper?"

Catching Fire paid no heed to his mistress' mirth. Instead, the small fennec seemed to be oddly alert, as if he sensed something approaching.

It seemed to be quite happy to be on the wing! It fluttered playfully around the acha and her pet before landing on a low branch of a nearby tree.

Once it was sitting still, it was easy to see that it held a sprig of mint in its beak, which was quite a strange thing for a songbird to do. It tilted its head to regard the doe, and took the mint from its beak with one foot. It chirped questioningly, high and sweet.

A flash of gold caught Kindling's eye, and she was immediately drawn to the songbird. It was such a bright thing, almost shone like fire in the sun. She liked that, bright things were beautiful, even in the swamp.

The doe stepped closer, and closer again when it was apparent the bird would not flee. It held out a sprig of some plant towards her and chirped, as if inviting her to take it.

"Oh, what's this? Are you going to give it to me?"

The little songbird tittered merrily, and held the mint out a little farther. Apparently, that was a yes.

The acha accepted the sprig graciously. How cute for a little birdie to bring something just for her.

"Thank you little one!"

You're quite welcome, the amused voice of an aged buck seemed to say from somewhere between her ears. The songbird winked - or possibly blinked, it was hard to tell when it had to turn one whole side of its head toward something to look at it - one glittering green eye, and took flight again.
