User Image It was a good season to be fishing. The doe pushed her head up to the surface and took a deep breath, unaware of the crown of water weeds tangled in her horns. The trout in her mouth, her prize, flopped halfheartedly. It knew it wasn't going to get away. It was a good catch: a female, full of roe. Her favorite.

She felt a little greedy eating the whole thing like that, but her wasp Persimmon didn't seem to be interested. The insect perched herself in the low-hanging branches of a tall cypress tree, completely disinterested. The glint in her black eye said she was watching, but she was far too busy grooming herself to pretend not to care. 'Greedy bug', she thought. 'You'll be hungry later.'

Rain turned a careful eye to the water and flicked her ears to clear some of the water from them. She felt a little nervous being all the way out here, away from her own familiar land. There's no caiman here, or at least she hasn't seen any. There's no reptile tracks in the mud, either. This has to be someone's territory for all of those fat lizards to be chased away. Is it? She didn't see any markers on the way in. If it is taken, then what a lucky claim it is. The water is slow moving and the fish are sweet.

Flame of the West was on patrol duty. He liked patrol duty well enough, it meant plenty of alone time and plenty of solitary hunting. He was aware of why they hunted in pairs, but Flame still preferred to fly solo. It meant less trouble, less problems and more importantly, it meant that he did not have to make small talk. He may have been the first of his siblings to become a hunter, but if there was anything Flame was bad at, it was making small talk.

His patrol route brought him to the northern reaches of Westfen's territory. Past Littleneck, was the cyprus forests and somewhere within, there was a pond filled with fish. Longclaw had brought him there once, and the fish they caught tasted fresh and sweet in his memory. Perhaps he would stop by and catch his lunch.

When he arrived at the pond, Flame stretched out and relaxed. It was nigh noon, and he'd already finished half his patrol. There was plenty of time to take a break. There was a movement out of the corner of his eye, and Flame stood up, alert. He watched as a doe emerged from the waters with a fat trout in her mouth.

"Hey, this is Westfen territory, what are you doing here?"

Rain visibly flinches when she hears the voice behind her, her ears picking straight up. Caught! Ohh shhiiiiiii- This is someone's territory! She knew it! Westfen? Oh no did she trespass into clan land? Internal panic rises in her chest but... maybe this doesn't have to be so bad. Think, think. The trout weighs heavily in the mouth as she treads water. It is a good catch. Maybe...

She swims to shore and takes a few deep breaths to calm herself, closing her eyes briefly. A lone buck. A patrol maybe? He wasn't... acidic sounding or anything. A quick glance over to Persimmon begs her, 'Please stay put. Please.' Alright. Alright. Let's do this.

Rain takes a step onto the shore, trying to hide her nervousness. Her black hooves sink into the soft sand, and her whole body feels heavy right now. While she doesn't necessarily feel guilty about going somewhere that she didn't know was forbidden, she does feel ashamed. She should have checked more closely for glyphs. She bows her head, water weeds and all, before the buck and lays the fresh fish at his feet. Her ears and tail are lowered as a sign a respect. Water rolls off her body, but she dare not shake it off, not in front of him and risk getting him wet. This won't work if he's angry.

"I apologize for trespassing onto your clan's lands. Please forgive me for my ignorance."

While apologizing, she does get a look at him. Perhaps not as good of a look as she would like, but a look nonetheless. He's certainly handsome. Reds and tan like clay soil, white like Crane's feathers, blue like deep water. It's a shame their first meeting had to be this way.

Flame of the West isn't sure exactly what he expected the doe to do. Maybe she'd scamper off, scared by his sudden appearence and accusation. Maybe she'd stick her nose up at him with indignance. Usually it was one of those two scenarios with intruders. Occasionally there'd be someone who'd want to fight it out. But never before had someone come forward and look so-- so timid.

He eyed the fish, and then raised his eyes to the doe. Her ears and tail were tucked in respect and the tone of her voice was certainly sincere. Flame sighed. It was easier to deal with people when they were angry, then all he had to do was flash them a few of his scars and they'd get the hint. But kimeti that genuinly felt sorry? That was harder.

"Nevermind, it's fine." He said, while nudging the fish back towards the white and blue doe. "If you didn't know, it doesn't matter. The glyphs in this area are a bit old, I can see how someone would miss them. Just try to be more careful next time, yeah?"

Thank the Motherfather he's not angry. Rain turns her eyes up at him and lets out a long slow breath, unaware that she had been holding it.

"Please, take it." A small smile pulls on the edges of her mouth. Looks like this one has gotten into his fair share of fights before, and she's thankful that it looks like that won't be happening today. A good catch, yes, but a small sacrifice overall. She takes a step back, forfeiting her right to have it. "It has come from the waters guarded by your clan and I have no right to it. Besides, the eggs are the best part." Her teal eyes twinkle. It is their work that kept the caiman out of these waters, after all. Good stewardship.

She tilts her head a bit to try and get a little more water out of her ears and realizes only now that she has managed to catch herself a fine crown of water weeds in addition to the fish. Ah, how silly this must look! Rain can't help but laugh as she gingerly lowers her head to shakes the weeds loose, helping the last few stubborn fronds with a small hoof.

"I am called Raining Underwater, in case your clan-family asks if you had any interlopers today." The pale doe pauses for a moment to gaze out over the land and then turns to look back over at the faithful guard. "I will do better to remember that this is claimed territory." Westfen, he said. She wills the name to stick in her mind. Knowing your neighbors seems like a prudent policy. A smile creeps across her face.

"If both of us are trying to give the other that fish... perhaps we should share it?"

"It was your catch, and by all rights yours. I could not take it but if you insist on sharing it--" He laughs then. It's true, the trout was plump with roe and he was terribly fond of that... If his mother had found out he'd taken food from a doe, she'd surely scold him. His father would too, for that matter.

The shaking had not helped. There were still a few errant leaves hanging in her hair. Without thinking, Flame leaned forward and pulled them from Raining Underwater's head, discarding them to the side. The buck stepped back to admire his work and flashed her a smile. If his siblings were here, they'd no doubt make fun of his unusual kindness, but they were the farthest thing from his mind at the moment.

"It's fine, what you've caught is yours to keep. And besides, I want to go for a swim anyways."

His sudden, unthinking kindness produces a light laugh and a smile from her. She's a bit embarrassed and a little more than slightly smitten; he's quite a gentleman, despite the rough exterior. Is he always this nice to trespassing does? Well... if he was, he wouldn't make a very good border guard, would he.

Waiting for him so they could eat together is tempting, but she doesn't want to push her luck. The end of her tail curls and uncurls as she thinks about it. Leaving a bad impression means that their second meeting wouldn't be as pleasant as this one, if there's a second meeting at all. This clan has quite an attractive holding. Getting on their bad side seems like a dumb idea.

"Ah, thank you! But... ah.. could I trouble you for your name?"

[T n T I am literally the worst at this I am so sorry.

"Ah," he says, suddenly aware of his own mistakes (how does one forget to introduce themselves?), "my name is Flame of the West."

He found himself unusually flustered in this doe's company. She was nothing like his sisters, nothing like demure Feverfew, nothing like the wily Burning Bush. The does of Westfen were his clanmates. Some were his partners, some his good friends, and others still his mentors. But this doe was none of those things and Flame of the West was unsure of how to approach her. He could not act the way he did at home.

In a way, she reminded him a little of his mother. He wondered if that was why he was so drawn to her.

The response he gets is a long 'hmmmmm' as she thinks about his name and what to do. She almost asks if she could call him Flame or West or Sunset or if he'd prefer something else entirely, but that would be a little too presumptuous. If she won't see him again after this, it won't matter what his nickname is. But... pushing her luck a little might be a nice chance of pace. Might as well make the most of it while she can.

"Well, Flame of the West, if I am trying to give you this fish and you are trying to give it to me, perhaps we should split it?" The doe smiles at the suggestion. "Then, I go. We share a meal and the Westen border remains inviolate." She performs a mock curtsy on the shore. It seems innocent enough, really. But then she smiles. Entirely innocent? Definitely not.
