"Riptide! Wait!"
The call came from a sandy colored filly, bumbling through the swamp on legs too long for her body, her gait the lanky clumsiness of growth. Her sister had always been the more capable of them two, and the more bold. This morning Riptide had dragged them off, going on about some adventure to be had, crashing through bushes with an enthusiasm and athleticism Breakwater could only try to match.
Yet even now she stumbled over an unseen root, a fuzzy blur against the marshy floor. She kept her footing only by sheer force of will, which admittedly was far stronger than her physique. Surprisingly, she had been keeping up pretty well today, up till this point where, after regaining her balance, she looked left and right and found her sister out of sight.
"Rip?"

Riptide pushed forward relentlessly. She could still smell the salt in the air which meant they were still close to the sea and the hovering eyes of their tribe. They needed to go deeper still into the swamp.
"Yeah, Break, common! Don't be so slow! We have to take advantage of their absence."
Whenever Riptide talked of "them" she was referring to various adults in the Tidewalkers. As fillies, Riptide and her siblings had been raised under the watchful eyes of the tribe. They lived on the beach, on the shore agains the ocean. At first, the young doe had been happy exploring the inlets and dunes of their home but now, deep in her awkward teenager stage, she wanted more. She wanted to see what lay beyond the sands. She wanted to know what was the forest like. Riptide felt a distinct longing for the swamp and she often snuck away to explore, dragging her unfortunate sister behind her.
Ahead of her, she saw a mangrove grove sitting in the still waters of a river, and Riptide's eyes lit up.
"Let's go Break! Let's go!" She said as she started to rush towards the grove.

Though out of sight, there was no mistaking her sister's voice, and Breakwater's ears picked up immediately. Her vision certainly wasn't all there, their father had said her mother's had been the same, but her other senses seemed determined to make up for it, admittedly clumsily. As such, she pinpointed her sister's location in an instant and bounded unhesitatingly towards it, ignoring the burning in her lungs. Yet just when she caught sight of her sister, Riptide was darting off again with some adventurous strength Breakwater had managed not to inherit. It was sheer willpower that got her to the stand of mangroves her sister had already reached, and once in their shelter she stopped, legs shaking, breathing hard. It was several moments before she had enough breath to call for her sister again. "Rip? Where are we going?"

"I'm down here Break, c'mon!" The doe shouted. Riptide had always spoken with loud voice, perhaps she was naturally inclined to it. Or maybe it was a habit she'd developed to help her sister. It was a mystery.
Riptide slid down the hill into the river. Around them the mangroves grew together thickly, their roots reaching out through the river banks. But the water was crisp and clear, and the sun reflected off it so beautifully. The water rose to slightly above her knees and felt cool. Riptide lowered her nose to the water and delighted in the clarity of it. Unlike the ocean, this water had only the slightest tinge of salt. It was something new, something exiting.
"Forward Break! Let's go farther up this river! I wonder where it leads?"
She started walking slowly through the river upstream. Wherever she walked, a trail of silt rose from the river bottom.

Minsuil Finally tagging things!!!! Her sister's voice carried, but Breakwater was always glad of that. She followed it, stumbling only once more before she found the hill, and the river. Even fuzzy, the scene was beautiful, sun and shimmering and mangrove roots. Her sister, of course, was already knee deep in the water, before she'd even had a moment to worry about the strength of its current. "Be careful Rip!", she called, making her slower, more cautious descent down to the river. "We shouldn't go too far, they'll come looking for us soon!"

"Its beautiful isn't it Break? Can't you just imagine what its like further up inside?"
Without waiting for her sister's reply, Riptide was already walking up the stream, following it farther into the swamps. Her heart was beating fast. This was the first time, the first time she'd been so far away. On the beach, there was not much green. There was sand, and there was sea and lots of salt. But here, the trees were starting to grow thicker. She wanted to go farther. She wanted to go deeper. She wanted to go so far that she could never go back.
Let them come, she thought, but I will not go back..

"It is," Breakwater admitted, "But-" not that her sister waited to hear. And for a moment she stood torn, turning to glance back up the bank towards the beach, then up the stream towards her sister. Riptide did not much care for the beach, but for Breakwater, for Breakwater it was different. She had their father's love for the sea in her blood, and thought it was a softer sort of love, it still called to her. But she loved her sister too. So she turned from the direction of the beach hopped into the stream, laughing as the cold water sprayed from her hooves, and started making her own slow way up after her. Meanwhile, on the shore that they had left this morning, a windswept figure was nosing two little beds in the sand, side by side. Brow furrowed, eyes dark, he raised his head towards the swamp.

I heard that there are different kin out there," her eyes drifted farther and farther down the river, I heard that there are some things that lived deep underground and don't have eyes. Do you think they're monsters?" Wonder and amazement filled Riptide's voice. She loved to hear the stories about the outside world. The beach was so solitary, so singular. Her family, her father, their clan head, even Waterside and her mate Longstride. They were all that existed on the beach.
"Oh, but don't worry Break! I'll protect you. They won't be able to get you, I'm the best fighter!" She turned back and shot her sister a wide grin.Vesperiie A super late reply. OTL Poor Squall probably knows exactly what happened lol.
