User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The cafe was... quaint.

It was a small structure attached to a larger bakery on the more rural side of the city. The bread smelled fresh but it didn't really matter when it was going to lose that scent in a few hours anyway and whatever wasn't bought would get thrown out and moldy. Snorting to himself, the monochromatic colt clopped slowly into the building named Café Délicieux and looked for someone to take his order. This was difficult for the young phony because, in point of fact, his eye sight was terrible. Everything was a big blob to him unless he was just a few inches from it (which was the only reason he was able to read the sign at all) and he had to scrunch his already dower looking face to discern any amount of detail.

"I want some tea," he said with a low though clearly boyish voice. Though Gloom Heart wasn't exactly sure who or what he was saying it too, he thought he could see the shape of a phony behind a counter. "The blackest you've got."

Black like his tiny heart.

User ImageKit had been at the counter while his mother was in the kitchen making a fresh batch of rolls. He was proud his mother had put him in charge of greeting guests. When he had his own restaurant he would make sure to greet everyone! Even if it meant there was a big ol'hole in the kitchen so he could see everyone. He knew that made the food taste even better when you saw it cooked and saw how happy the person cooking it was. So when the bell to the shop rang he was ready!

The colt that entered was no older than himself, white like him but without the splotches his mother gene's had gifted him. And the phony had black hair and hooves with pretty purple eyes. His first customer! Though he seemed a little lost if not half blind. As he called out the order Kit nodded.

"Well Hoooooowdy!!" he said loudly as he normally did. The perky colt hopped down from his chair and called to the back, "HEY MAW! We need some black tea! We gots a customer!"

Once the order was in he trotted over to the colt with a smile, "Howdy! My name is Country Kitchen, or Kit for short! Lemme show ya to yer table!" He showed Gloom to a comfortable shrot table made for phoals. "Can I getcha anythin else? We gots all sorts of deeeeelicious foods GARUNTEED to make a happy belly!"

"Well Hoooooowdy!"

Goom Heart narrowed his eyes and cringed. Not only was this other colt friendly, he was loud. Obnoxiously loud. "Gloom Heart," he grumbled quietly, speaking much slower than the mile-a-minute colt before him.

As Kit got closer and began showing Gloom Heart to his table, more physical details became apparent to the both of them. For Gloom, he caught onto the splotchy spots that had been previously swallowed up by Country Kitchen's white fur while his mane was a rather interesting shade of blue. To Kit, the colt would notice the slight bags beneath Gloom Heart's eyes as if he were sleep deprived.

When he pulled himself morosely into the seat for younger phonies, Gloom turned back to the exuberant Country Kitchen who never seemed to shut his mouth. "...What do you have?" His tone was skeptical, certain there wouldn't be anything worth getting on the menu besides the tea, but he supposed it wouldn't hurt to have a listen -- especially if it meant he'd be left alone sooner rather than later.

"Nice ta meetcha, Doom Heart!" Kit grinned as the other introduced himself. Woah and from the look of it the colt needed a good meal and a good nap afterwards. He had best make sure the colt got everything he needed. The colt's hair was so black, he liked it. Plus he liked the other colt's eyes. They were a pretty grape shade of purple!

"Oh we have all sorts of nibbles! We got all kinds of baked goods, courtesy of my Maw! And I can cook ya up all sorts of good fixins!" he offered up the menu that had the large list of baked goods that Bon could fix and the small list of southern comfort food that Kit could fix. His mother had been kind enough to add them to the menu to encourage her son.

"I suggest the biscuits and gravy or maybe some DElish mashed taters and chicken'n dumplins!" he pointed with a light hoof at each piece of food he mentioned. Luckily for Doom, a bell sounded and Kit trotted off to get the colt's tea. It was a cup of Earl Grey, with nothing added but small bags of sugar and cream incase he needed. "Here ya go! Fresh from my Maw's kitchen!"

Doom Heart?

One of Gloom's brows twitched. "It's Gloo--" he mumbled but was easily over shadowed by Country Kitchen's booming and vivacious voice. He pushed the menus over in front of the gloomy phony who stared at them tiredly, squinting his eyes and leaning in so close his nose was almost touching it when Kit's hoof was out of the way. Frowning deeply, he attempted to tune the other colt's voice out as best he could until the bell rang and he glanced up, only to see the colorful blob that was Kit walking away -- and then coming back.

The scent of earl grey tea hit his nostrils and he relaxed almost instantly, leaning back in the seat and just taking the opportunity to let the smell waft around him. Of course, the calming atmosphere the tea gave only lasted a few seconds before Country Kitchen opened his mouth again and started rambling.

Raising a hoof to one of his temples, Gloom Heart narrowed his eyes at the other colt and attempted to raise his voice past its typically low volume enough to interrupt him. "It's Gloom Heart and I don't need anything but the tea," with his free hoof, he nudges the menus away without giving them a second glance, "Country." The monochrome colt made a point to stress the name Kit didn't ask to be called as though it were an insult. He just wanted to enjoy his tea and be done with this place if their staff were this annoying.

Country hadn't caught he had mispronounced the other colt's name and kept talking. He didnt even respond atwhen the name; his sister called him that sometimes. He was a little oblivious to the others disdain of him, thinking he was just tired and needed a good meal. Food always made things better! At least in his opinion it did. He shook his blue mane as the other stated he didn't want anything.

"Nawnsense! From the looks of it you need a good meal! And that tea ain't gonna gitcher belly full! Just hold on a sec!" The colt smiled and trotted his way to the kitchen. "Maw there is a skinny phoals out there. I gots to get him somethin in his belly!"

Bon Bon smiled as her some came in and looked out at the colt. He did look a little sickly but seemed annoyed. She chuckled as she thought her son was being more than friendly enough. She handed him a fresh basket of biscuits. "Try zez mon petit."

Kit was more than happy to deliver the biscuits and some fresh made butter, "there ya go! Tea and biscuits. Fancy like!"

The blurry image of the overzealous phony only served to make the small gloomy colt even gloomier. It was a mix of annoyance, frustration, and disappointment that registered on his face in a tight but tired frown. His vibrant purple eyes were narrowed rudely, offering a glare to Country Kitchen that anyone but the blue maned colt could see. Just how dumb was this phony that he didn't get the hint?

As he spoke well over Gloom Heart and quickly toddled off, the dark haired phony just let out a despondent sigh and leaned forward to give the tea a sniff. It smelled alright, strong, and with a quick flick of his tongue he determined it tasted okay too. At least it wasn't just a bunch of gross sludge like coffee. He could tell it was made with a tea bag, though, instead of leaves or a simmer, and that lessened his opinion of it a bit. Gloomy phonies had gloomily high standards, after all -- so high, they were hardly attainable by anyone.

When Kit returned with the biscuits and butter, he just stared at them silently. They smelled... pretty decent. It wasn't hard to assume that they were made by the older mare in the back whose voice he had heard. Gloom Heart was pretty sure Country Kitchen couldn't make a decent biscuit to save his life if he wasn't even able to pay attention to the customer. With a frustrated click of his tongue, he just mumbled "Right. Fancy..." and decided not to say thank you to the other colt considering he didn't ask for them at all, "Are these going to cost me extra...?"

"Nope! On the house! Seein as you are my first customer and all!" he smiled again. As usual not even registering the gloomy phony's demeanor. He was kinda naive like that. Most foul moods could be cured with food. So he expected the other to feel better after eating. "Iffin ya need something else, just give a hollar!"

Kit went back to the counter and sat happily. His mother walked out, in anthro form wiping her hands on her apron. She smiled at her son. "Zo, deed ze cuztemear like 'ez food?"

"I think so Maw," Kit smiled happily.

Bon Appetit looked over at the Gloomy phony and frowned a bit. He didn't look happy at all. Her son could be...ah...boisterous. She walked over giving the white and black colt a smile, "Bonjour, I 'ope everyzeng ez to your likeng."

The fact that they were free softened the blow from the unwanted biscuits but not from how peppy and loud this colt was. Gloom Heart watched him pointedly, snorted, and then turned his attentions to the tea he'd received until Kit went back to the counter. He could hear their mumbling but not the words that followed. Still, it was pretty easy to deduce they were discussing him, what with him being the only customer currently as well as the fact that he saw someone else coming towards him from the corner of his eye.

If he didn't have his glasses on, he wouldn't have believed what he saw. Never in his short life as a foal had he seen an anthro form and the sudden presence of one (especially one that wasn't half bad to look at) drew him further in and made the dreary foal even more timid. Gloom's glasses slid down his snout slightly when he looked back at the biscuits and tea as she asked, the thick accent yet another surprise.

"It's fine, I guess," he finally managed to mumble, averting eye contact while he stared dumbly at the biscuits which he still had yet to try. If he was right and she was the one to make them, then it probably wouldn't hurt to take a bite. His small hooves reached for the plate and pulled it closer before he leaned over and nibbled at the side of one. It was light, fluffy, and oh so buttery but Gloom wasn't about to say that. "Yeah. It's fine." Hopefully that would appease the older woman's worries and he could go back to eating alone like he was meant to.

Bon Bon smiled at the young one, reaching out to push his glasses back into place with one slender finger. The boy seemed frazzled, which was a common reaction to her anthro form. After all she know of only two others who could take such form. "I am glad. My zon onlee wishez to make you 'appy. En 'ez own way. Enjoy your food and zank you for coming."

She walked off and patted her son on the head as she walked back into the kitchen.

Kit was happy. He had served his first customer and his mother had approved. Though the other still seemed a bit under the weather it gave him a warm feeling to give the colt something to make him feel better. Like biscuits fresh from the oven kinda warm. He resolved then and there to always make sure others had good food if he could spare it.
