Masuko paced just outside of the Mava'bunda lands. A mix of silence and hidden turmoil had made it hard to reorganize the pack after the failure of an attack on the Pridelands. Yes, they had successfully killed some lions, but they had suffered more losses than the wretched things. Father...

A snarl escape her jaws as she paced faster, not sure where to start. Her father had taught her as best he could, but he had never been the alpha-type. The pack had barely held together when he was leader, and now that she took over after the messiness of war it had pretty much dissolved.

Action was needed, and she needed to depend on her current right hand, her sister, Chora.

She waited for her, though there was no report expected. Masuko did her best to still her anger by pacing in this area, and the ligher-toned hyena certainly knew that.

Chora had taken to wandering much farther since the war had ended and the pack seemed to lose focus- but she always came back, ever dedicated to her home and her sister. There wasn't anything of particular interest that she was able to find today so she was searching for Masuko. She had a pretty good idea of where to find her but she didn't know what exactly she was going to run into. Everything seemed so up in the air lately.

"Masuuuuko," she called, squinting through the shadows until she spotted the familiar pacing figure, "Masuko."

With an ear twitch, Masuko's head swiveled around at about the same time she stopped her pacing. "Chora," the Alpha breathed, never finding it easy to be angry at her own flesh and blood. A sister was much more trust worthy than many of the hyenas that she was trying to regather, and that was why she retained one of the highest ranks.

"What did you see today? Anything?" Masuko did her brunt of the work, but it was impossible to have eyes on every inch of the elephant graveyard. "They are starting to return, our deserters, with the whisperings of glory nipping at their heels." Masuko would forgive those that had deserted after the war. Self preservation always won out over loyalty.

It was apparent that Masuko was in a sour mood, though she didn't take it out on her sister and Chora was not unappreciative of that fact. She offered a small smirk when her sister said more deserters were returning.

"Nothing so interesting as any homecomings," she said, "No signs of other intruders, either."

Her voice faltered slightly at the end of her statement. She meant there were no lions about but she had, actually, seen an outsider. He wasn't much of a real threat but he stood out.

"Actually," she said, "Have you ever noticed a strange male lurking around the borders, off that way-" she gestured, they weren't actually too far from where she'd crossed his path before, "He said he's always lived here and he didn't look young."

"Huh?" Masuko's irritation started to dissolve when her mind was given something....different to think about. It was odd. How could a hyena live here for a long time and not be discovered by the pack?

"It sounds like a few idiot scouts decided he was a pack member and never reported it." It wouldn't surprise her, as a lot of the pack members did their best to slack off when they could get away with it. This is why she needed a head scout, someone to keep them in line. Bastards.

"So, you came across him?" she asked, her ears up and facing Choza with curiosity.

Hmm, she hadn't considered that perhaps he had been spotted before but was considered a wandering pack member. He was a hyena, that made it possible. And he didn't seem very approachable, even before you knew that he was apparently a crazy hermit.

"He seemed fairly territorial for occupying so little space by himself," she said, assuming if he tried to claim more land he would have been more obvious sooner, "But it didn't last, he didn't really seem like he was all there."

She shook her head.

"Hmmmm." Masuko took a moment to think about what Chora had reported. It wasn't anything she had been expecting to hear from her, and it brought a little trouble with it as well. Just what was going on? If one hyena claimed to live here for a long time and no one knew he was there, who (or what) else was living out there?

"This worries me. Do you think we should just absorb him into the pack? Convince him he's been part of us all along?" That would be easier than forcing the stupid male away, or making him agree to abide by the pack's laws. Annexing him into membership and leaving him for the most part alone (beyond a little proof of loyalty here and there) seemed much easier and less stressful.

"He hasn't been trouble before, I don't see why he should be a worry now," she said thoughtfully, though the more she thought about her encounter, the more she thought just knowing he was there made a difference, "He seemed very aware of us, though. He might not fall for a trick but maybe he shouldn't be left alone, either."

Hmmm.

"Interesting. He was old?" That seemed to make more sense if he was not quite there but smart enough to realize that the pack had been claiming the entire elephant graveyard for some time. Just because the hyenas claimed it didn't mean that they could force that claim if push came to shove. She needed more guards.

"I wonder if I'll need to confront him. Coerce him to listen to his alpha," she said with a snarl.

Taking a moment to calm herself, she faced Chora with the best smile she could come up with. Which was a bit pathetic. "Thanks, sister."

Chora nodded confidently. Even with an exact age being a mystery, knowing well enough that the state of him made him seem older.. and crazier. He didn't stand a chance if Masuko wanted to confront him, especially since she wasn't alone if she did.

"No problem," she said calmly, shrugging, "Might make for an interesting distraction."

Clearly Masuko wasn't thrilled to have someone hiding away around the borders and that didn't make for much of a pleasant break from everything else that was going on.. but it was something different, something simple enough.

The alpha's tail twitched as she thought about it more. It seemed like quite a good idea. Hopefully she would still feel confident once the time came to confront him. Though she could be a tough alpha, she didn't find it pleasing to bully the old or the young.

"I shall approach him come tomorrow. It may be best to catch him off guard, pin him down and see just what he thinks about my offer." A grin grew on her face. "It sounds like a fine plan. I assume everything else is normal?"

She couldn't help but mirror Masuko's grin, the apparent moods and confidences of the alpha were infectious. That was as it should be, it was reassuring to Chora. She wasn't sure on the sincerity of her sister's smile but she didn't need to dwell on it.

"Nothing else out of the ordinary to report," she said, "Do you want me to stay near the borders to greet any more old friends that come along?"

Masuko nodded. "If you would, yes. If you feel there are more pressing matters related to your duties as bone reader, you should do those instead." She sniffed at the air, debating on who to check in on next. Scouts? Perhaps. Probably. Sometimes she wondered how the pack survived with so many scouts, but it did keep their general knowledge of activity around the pack active.

"I shall go meet up with another scout before checking up on that old hyena you mentioned. I shall talk to you soon."

And with that short farewell, she trotted off.
