Riding Horses/Beasts

Caltharian Heavy Horse
These southern horses may be any color, but often retain white markings. Recently a preference has been developed for the lighter coats, as it is believed that the horses is less likely to suffer from heat stroke, and the breeders have been responding to this preference. The "best" Draughts have particularly graceful heads, with large prominent dark eyes, small ears, wide foreheads and comparatively delicate muzzles.

Their necks are long, thick and muscular, sloping down into heavy shoulders and well-muscled body. These horses usually stand about 5'4" tall and rarely weigh more than 1 ton. They are primarily used as workhorses but have a pleasant gait which makes them good riding animals as well.

Jerrahn Horse
Much like their masters, the Jerrahn have a very proud, strong appearance, and are quite uniform, the only major variations generally being in color. The average height tends to be about 5'7" at the withers, with females only a few inches shorter. At a little more than 6' long, their powerful, endurance based bodies are a little thinner than would be expected. In particular, their snouts seem especially long, and possess a a gentle, though pronounced, downwards curve. Their definitive crest, a bare growth of bone about three inches high, is located just above the eyes and resembles carefully cut off horn. Pyramidal in shape, its about six inches long and five wide, and makes the mane stop a little sooner on the neck than most would expect.

They've big, expressive brown and black eyes, with an extra membrane developed to protect themselves from blowing dust. Tails and manes are both long, gray and require frequent grooming. It's often a source of pride among owners to have well kept, braided manes and tails, and they frequently decorate them with beads and other fineries for festivals. Common coat colours are black, brown and white, though a fair number of individuals have been found with a reddish color.

Rusik Horse
The Rusik is around 5 1/2 feet at the withers and is covered in short glossy dark reddish brown hair. The body is somewhat barrel shaped with strong chest and shoulder muscles, tapering to the flank and ending in large strong hip and thigh muscles. It has four legs that appear too thin to support the body, but are quite capable of doing so, that end in solid hooves. The hooves are light tan in color with the color lightening and extending up into and a little above the fetlock. This may not always be true on every animal but the hooves are always lighter. These hooves are slightly longer than in other breeds making it surer of foot and more agile. The Rusik has a large strong, slightly long neck. The head is elongated with large cheeks and jaws and ending in a rounded muzzle. The forehead is roughly diamond shaped and flat with the face long and tapered to the muzzle. The muzzle consists of two large rounded nostrils and large lips, all of which are fuzzy and soft. The mouth has large chisel-shaped incisors for cutting the grasses and large premolar and molars with convoluted surfaces for grinding the grasses it eats. On either side of the forehead are large ears roughly pyramidal in shape and can rotate from front to back, together or independently. It has two large eyes that are slightly to the front of the head that range from brown to black in color. The mane and tail for this animal is long and flowing and a creamy white in color. Unlike other breeds of this horse there is no forelock. The horse is different from most other breeds in that they have one less vertebra in the back. When the Rusik is in fell stride it is graceful and quick with the mane waving in the air with the tail raised and also waving in the air. , and all sorts of spotted combinations of these colors are found with frequency. Their muscular legs possess 'feathers', longer patches of hair beneath their knees that often obscure their large hooves from sight.

Aj‘Nuvic Riding Beast
With a shoulder height of over 6' tall, the Aj'Nuvic is one of the tallest mammals living in the desert.

The Aj‘Nuvic has a shiny fur ranging from a soft white to a light gold brown. If you touch it, it feels hard and smooth, but underneath it is very soft. Its hind legs are slightly longer and more pronounced than the front ones, this gives its back a gracious curve which is carried on by a long neck. The Aj'Nuvic's head seems a bit small, but has the same delicate features as the whole body. The pointed, in comparison to the head rather big, ears are able to move in nearly every direction and can be twisted in a manner that they cover the opening and protect it from sand whirling around in a sand storm. The soft sensitive nose can be closed as well. But the most prominent feature of the Aj'Nuvic are the eyes of a golden brown, able to see very well in the dark. To protect them the eyes are surrounded by dense eyelashes. In the bright daylight an additional transparent skin covers the eyes and the Aj‘Nuvic closes the eyes at least half as well.

Another remarkable part of the body of this beast are the paws. They are quite large and have three limbs pointing forward and one very small to the back. Between these limbs, which the Aj‘ can spread apart quite far, is a skin so indestructible like rock. With these the Aj‘ is able to cross moving sands without effort and is very fast compared to horses. It also has a not too long tail without any remarkable features.

Gryph (Giant Bird)
Supposed to be survivors of primeval times of Caltharia, when many other titanic are said to have roamed the skies, the Gryph is huge by nature, and the wings of a full-grown Gryph can stretch from 9' to 15' from tip to tip. There are several different species of the Gyphs, some resemble their cousins, the great eagle, in almost every aspect. This includes their razor sharp talons, to their hooked beaks. Other Gryphs have been seen with hind legs or dragon-like wings. A very special variety of the Gryph is the so-called Gryphon or Griffon, which represent beasts with the head, forelegs and wings of a majestic eagle and the strong body of a lion. However, it is supposed that these beasts in fact are not directly related to the Gryph.

But back to the Gryph: The Gryph's feathers, which cover the entire body, tend to be brown of some shade although the especially rare gold one is born. Their heads are usually colored differently than the rest of their body, a lighter shade of brown than the body, usually a Gold Gryph will have a white, almost luminous head.

Fujin (Riding Cat)
A great cat of considerable stature, the Fujin is famed for its aggressive, intimidating stance on the battlefield. A typical male of this species can grow up to 9 feet at the shoulder blades with its head resting around 2 feet above them. Many differences lie in the shape, size, and build between the female and male of these breeds, although each possess the distinct fur of their kind. The pelt of the Fujin is believed to consist of sleek short and hollowed hairs that reflected the colors around the beast thus making the cat hardly visible despite its massive size. When a military general, whose name has been lost throughout the fabrics of time, captured and succeeded to come up with a way to tame these massive cats, the Fujin pelt’s color was used to the army’s advantage.

Fujin males reach maturity at about 10 years of age and are typically 9 feet tall at the shoulders. They are at maximum, with their tail outstretched, between 12 and 15 feet long. The male cat's body is heavy and muscular in contrast to the lithe, trim body of the Fujin female cat. Also noticeable, the Fujin is its massive jaw muscles and sharp teeth; the canines of Fujin being about 3" in length. In addition to sharp jaw and thick neck muscles, the Fujin male is also noted for its broad forehead because of a extra bone plate in the Fujin’s forehead almost completely separated from the cat's skull except for some connective flesh at the top of the bone plate. The bone plate extends from just below the cat's ears to just above the Fujin’s eyes, and extends from ear to ear in length. The bone plate spans at its widest point around 1 1/2 feet.

Muscles in the neck, jaw, and massive forehead are crucial in both the male Fujin’s hunting style and mating rituals.

In contrast, the female Fujins are noticeably smaller than the males of this breed. A female Fujin which reaches maturity at 15 years of age stands typically about 6 feet in height. The females are at maximum, with their tail outstretched, between 9 to 12 feet in length. The female Fujin is also built noticeably different from the males.

Monsters

Oracau
Male Oracaus are usually about 6.5 feet in length and about 2.5 feet at the shoulder while females comes in a little less, averaging about 4 feet in length and 2.25 feet at the shoulder. The tail is about a foot in length, used for swatting off flies. These measurements can vary greatly in some cases. A dead Oracau was found that had a length of nearly 9 feet and 3 feet at the shoulder. However, such cases are very rare.

The color of the pelage of this cunning beast is usually a tawny yellow, blending in very well with the autumn grasses of its home plain, allowing it to stalk and kill its prey with a greater surprise and thus a greater success rate. The distinct mane, usually varying from a ginger to a dark brown is present in all males. The color of the mane can depend on the area, age, or by the individual Oracau. In general, the Oracaus living in drier parts of the plain have a lighter color while the ones living in a wetter environment have darker manes.

In rare cases albino oracaus have been spotted , but such occurrences are very, very rare.

Tagers
Some say that Tagers are relatives to the eagles with their impressive grey, feathered wings. Some say that the ancestors were dragons and point to the black lizard-looking head. Which one of these statements that is correct is hard to say.

Their wingspan is impressive. On a full-grown Tager it can be 9 - 10 feet. However, the biggest skeleton the dwarves have found had a wingspan of 15 feet. Those giants are believed to live higher up the mountain. The wings are covered with black, grey and white, where the grey feathers are most common.

The head is, as said, of large lizard and completely black. When the sun shines upon the head it glitters in every colour you can name. The eyes are of an eagle, often green and constantly searching the air around and the ground below. The ears are small and thin and leans backwards. The hearing is not so great, but that sight compensates that.

The neck is long, very lithe and covered with the scales of a lizard. This makes it possible for the beast to eat from its claws in mid air despite the short legs. The Tagers are almost completely quiet animals. They use clicking noises to communicate with each other. The clicking sounds seems to come from the throat and they don't have to open their mouths to do it.

The Tager's legs are short but the claws are strong and sharp. The size of the claws is also different between the sexes. The males have larger claws, with more power but with less accuracy. The females’ are smaller and better for taking care of the young ones. When it catches its food the claws are buried in prey and after that they will not open until the Tager is ready to feed.

There are two ways to separate the sexes. One is that the males are slightly larger than the females and the other one is that males have more white feathers and females more black ones.

Giant Spider
Ranging from 3-12 feet in diameter, Giant Spiders are a gruesome sight to see. They have 8 legs, which all have different uses. The two forelegs have pincers at their ends. Rightly so these are used for defense and as well slightly stability when moving quickly. The two legs in the mid-section of the Spider are used for stability in movement and are the primary movers when a Giant Spider wants to move sideways. The two back legs are used primarily for the power in the forward movement. In general, the legs of Giant Spiders are not very dense compared to the rest of the body. The density of a Giant Spider depends on its type and how its hunting is going.

Cartashian Bear
The full grown Cartashian Bear can reach a height of 11 feet thus rendering his opponents to mere dwarves. The appearance of the beast is very similar to a typical brown bear but unlike his relative the Cartashian Bear is not only much bigger but also much stronger and may turn aggressive very easily when harrassed. Furthermore the skin color of the Cartashian Bear varies: It may be brown, black or white - due to the region the bear lives in. Usually Cartashian Bears are very plump in appearance with a short, fat neck and rather short feet and arms and a fragmentary tail. Generally they walk on all fours and can climb trees very fast, although their enormous size and weight limits the possibilities of adult bears so that they mainly walk on the ground. Cartashians have a full set of teeth, some sharp for tearing, others flat for more green food. They are also equipped with large claws, perhaps measuring 6 inches each. Needless to say, the Cartashian Bear is quite a fearsome sight.

Netherbeasts
Netherbeasts vary greatly in appearance. Most accounts say that there is no consistency between each one. The dark magics that summon them, and the victims that the beasts prey on, all contribute to a Netherbeast's appearance. Most demonologists agree that the Netherworld is a place of utter chaos making the Netherbeast a creature of chaos as well.

One account from the famous Battle of Hegedorn, by an elven mage named Draydor Illiyarm, described his encounter from a journal entry:

"As the dark wave of creatures spilled forth from the mountains, I could see leading the way were many creatures leaping and gnashing, wildly tearing a path of destruction. Each creature possessed either claws or legs that resembled curved blades. Some had multiple heads resembling insects while others slithered along the ground like snakes. They produced all manner of noises from loud chittering to wailing and clacking of jaws. Most were a deep black or red in colour, while others were the colour of dead trees, brown and lifeless. Several resembled open, wet flesh, bloody and glistening in the moonlight. I managed to cast a few spells before their very putrid smell turned me away in disgust and I fled..."

In general, a Netherbeast is not a large creature. They are perhaps the size of a large dog, most accounts say, with multiple legs and arms. The closest kind of creature on Caltharia that they look like would perhaps be a spider crossed with a rotted corpse of a rat with most having hardened shells. Accounts are often vague and so varied that it is impossible to determine an exact appearance of a Netherbeast.

Giant Kraken
Giant Kraken weight almost one ton, and over 120 feet in height. The largest Giant Kraken ever found had a tentacle span of 30 feet. The Kraken is able to camouflage itself with its surroundings, capable of changing colors from bright red, to greens, to sandy orange, making it almost impossible to see under the water. The Kraken has 8 tentacles, each having up to 1000 suckers aligning them. The large suckers are endowed with sensors, which allow the Kraken to reject something if it doesn’t seem right to eat. Their average lifespan is only 3 years.

The Ophochio (Swamp Serpent)
This great beast is usually between 15 and 21 feet long when fully grown. The largest ever killed was 7 peds and one fore long. It has an immense draconic head about 2 feet long, with very sharp, long teeth, large yellow eyes and, like all snakes, a forked tongue. It breathes underwater through its gills, located just behind the jaws and covered by a thin, spiky, cartilaginous crest that usually extends down flat along the neck but is roused and spreads out around the head and face when the creature is fighting. However, it can survive above water without breathing for fairly long periods of time. The long segmented body, which is nearly the thickness of a human man in diameter, is (at the widest point) covered by a thick shell-like hide, except for the softer underbelly. Each segment is about two palmspans long. The hide is a silvery blue-green, the underbelly a pale reddish colour. An interesting property of the hide is that it has a rough, abrasive surface, like that of sharkskin or fine sand. However, the underbelly skin, though fairly tough, is soft and smooth to the touch. A series of sharp ridges runs along the animal’s back from head to tail. The Ophochio also has two small, sharp, curving horns, though they are not used much as weapons. In terms of bone structure, and skeletal formation it is rather unusual, for the bones are a dark purple-red in colour. (If left to dry in the sun, however, they will eventually fade to a pale lavendar shade.) It is thought that this colour comes from the creature's blood, which is thick and mucous-like in consistency, not at all resembling normal blood. The Ophochio's muscles are very thick and dense, rendering the beast extremely heavy.

Mythical Creatures

Phoenix
Of all the winged creatures on the surface of Caelereth, none is so mystical, beautiful, or wondrous as the Bird of Flames, the legendary Phoenix. This awe inspiring bird is rarely seen, and very little is known about its origins. The Phoenix is breathtaking to say the least. Its large size only enhances its beauty, as it soars and dives in the sky. Its feathers are composed entirely of fire; its tail feathers orange and deep yellow, and its body mostly dark orange, red and crimson. Other then the feathers of fire, the Phoenix has other defining features. The huge talons are razor sharp and could easily skewer several men. They are quite comparable to the front legs of the Griffon, only they are in the more traditional place of birds. The talons themselves are about a half-foot long, three curved claws in front, and one larger jagged claw in the back. Another defining feature of the Bird of Flames is its head. The long and slender beak looks very traditional to most large birds, but its eyes are a much different story. They are deep set and shine of an intelligence that is undeniable, which is truly remarkable. There is no doubt that the majestic beast has hidden origins, an even more mysterious present, and a shrouded future.

Manticore
The Manticore is - like e.g. the griffon - a strange and nowadays very rare combination of two or more common Caelereth beasts, in this case obviously of an oracau and a gryph, sometimes of a scorpion too. Manticores possess the complete body of the predator but are also endowed with enormous wings, furthermore - although this may vary - they can have a lethally spiked tail which reminds of the mentioned scorpion.

As the Manticore mainly is an oracau it also has most of its abilities and advantages, but although a dangerous foe the Manticore has not the agility seen at the oracau itself. Many descriptions in the old books tell that the heavy wings mostly hinder the beast to lead quick attacks with its claws. The attack with its spiked, poisonous tail seems to be the most effective weapon the beast possesses. As for the wings which make the Manticore so impressive: They allow the beast only to fly short distances, which often is enough to catch the prey in an unexpected moment.

The Manticore has a natural vermillion color and stands between 3.5 and 5 feet in height at the shoulder, a length of up to 9 feet, and also has a wingspan of up to 15 feet. It has huge jaws that hold three rows of razor-sharp teeth, upper and lower, that interlock when the beast closes its mouth. The teeth could shred flesh and bone to shards without much effort.

There are two breeds of Manticore, those with scorpion tails and the even rarer Manticore with dragon tails. Dragon tailed Manticores have the speed and agility of normal oracaus and can fly 4 times as far as the scorpion tailed Manticore or 1.2 dashes. The wings of the Dragon tailed Manticore may appear like the wings of a dragon.

Mad Dancing Faeries
They always take the form of young beautiful women and they always appear only in groups. However, anyone who happens to see their unearthly mad dance is doomed: the men become mute and unable to take care of themselves anymore, while the women become crazed, talking continuously and not being able to hold on to a certain state of mind for more than a few moments. The Wicked or Mad Faeries always appear as voluptuous young women. They are usually dressed in a very seductive manner, sometimes wearing translucent veils, at times just leaving large parts of their bodies uncovered, but they were also sometimes reported as wearing mail shirts - perhaps as a proof that sometimes the ways of seduction may elude the most wittiest of minds. However, when they are not wearing mail shirts, they are said to have small silver bells attached to their ankles; that, combined with their eternally loud cheering manner, is always announcing their presence in a certain area, a warning for the unwary traveler. They were never seen as individuals, but always in groups, performing their mischief on any unfortunate man or woman who happens to be around.

Undead

Zombii
These decomposing monsters (also refered to as Zombies, the Living Dead, Undead, Walking Corpses or the Resurrected) are often brought to life via a magical incantation. They are difficult to destroy, as these corpses refuse to let go of living as easily as they had in their previous existence. They are emotionless, mindless and malleable; and can continue their tasks without arms, legs, or even heads. Unfortunately, to sustain a zombii, one must breach the code of ethics; these beasts feed upon the flesh of their living brethren.

These creatures come in varied shapes and forms. As long as a corpse (ANY corpse, though flora is excluded) is buried within the earth, it can become a Zombii. It only requires the strength of a necromancer or a Quepruran cleric to give it the illusion of living. Zombii can be in any stage of decay; from the newly dead to skeletons, anything can be the tool of these crafty spell-casters.
