She bent forward, leaned in closer towards the plant. The doe narrowed her eyes, trying to decide if it was the plant she was looking for or it's similar, but deadly cousin. With a sigh of defeat, the young doe sat back on her haunches. She couldn't remember.

Acorn Crop had taught her so well, had beat the plants into her mind, but still, she'd forgotten. Feverfew narrowed her eyes at the offending clump of grass. She shook her head. It was no use. Stick-Paws, her mongoose companion scrambled out from the bushes with a mouth of wormwood leaves. It was good to know that one of them knew what to look for.

Moonflower was dangerous. Acorn Crop had told her that just eating one flower was enough to give an adult kimeti a debilitating belly-ache for an entire day. It was such a shame that Moonflower looked so similar to the Whiteflower, a useful herb that could be used to stop infection and swelling. She knew that they shared one major difference, but try as she might, Feverfew just could not remember.

User Image He was surprised to find his favorite spot to collect herbs not empty. To his knowledge, no one else knew of it and it was strange to find an unknown doe -- and a mongoose, clutching leaves in its mouth -- staring at the flowering field he considered his own. He was not sure he was up to dealing with someone, not with how the day had started.

He had woken from a horrible dream, his fur drenched with sweat, only to find a young doe sick not far away. He had nudged his foxbun to the stores of plants and attempted to help her. Needless to say it had not gone well and he'd decided to stay in his -- not quite a -- cave of a home. And then he'd found he was running low, if not outright missing, quite a number of helpful leaves and fruits and stems and seeds and berries.

He sighed, he needed the medicinal things he'd come to collect. Surely there were enough for both of them. He gave a nod, sending his pink foxbun sliding forward -- why it insisted on riding on his head, he would never know -- and his vision temporary disappeared. A snort was his only reply to that, leaving his voice to call out to the doe, "Do you come here often?"

The voice snapped her out of her thoughts, startled the doe. Feverfew shot up, turned around to see a buck standing behind her. There was a rustle of leaves to the left as Sticky-Paws disappeared into the flowers. That was never a good sign. Her mongoose, helpful as he was, was always causing trouble. Feverfew could only pray and hope nothing horrible would happen.

"No, er," she stammered, "I, um, don't really come here that often. Actually, I don't think I've ever, ah, been here before."

She raised her gaze from the ground and looked at the buck. The foxbun sitting on his head looked entirely pleased with itself and it's current location, either oblivious to it's master's ire or entirely certain of it. If she didn't know any better, Feverfew would say that it looked rather smug. Her haze drifted to the buck, and she felt as if something was wrong. Acorn Crop had told her that sometimes it was good to trust your gut, even if you had no proof. Feverfew's gut told her something was wrong.

"Are you okay?" She blurted out.

The foxbun shifted upward allowing him sight to see the doe shoot up. Healing Wounds tensed at her quick reaction; he hadn't meant to startle her. It seemed that he often did that without intent. At least she had not shouted at him.

She began to stammer and though he thought to interrupt, he remained silent. That may have had more to do with the ever sliding foxbun on his head. His mouth twitched and he made the decision that it was coming down.

He was in the process of unseating his pet, the pink fluffball sliding from its perch on his head by tilting his nose upward, when she blurted out, "Are you okay?" His eyes shifted, was she being polite or did she think him ill?

"My day has not had a wonderful start...," he started and then shrugged. "Does something ail you?" he added, for he had not run into other kin like himself that were into herb gathering and naturally assumed she might be ill. However from what he could tell she had no outward symptoms from this distance.

"No, No! Not at all." Something shifted, and on instinct Feverfew looked behind her. Her mongoose was nowhere to be seen and she was not quite sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. She turned back the the buck, trying to figure out how to explain that she was looking for a plant. The last time she told that to a buck, he'd laughed at her. Her tail drooped at that thought, she didn't like being laughed at. It made her ears burn a terrible shade of pink that Feverfew associated with fever.

"I, um." Feverfew glanced down, then back up, turned her head to the left so she wasn't meeting his gaze. "I'm looking for a plant."

She glanced up, "but that's not important really. Are you okay? You look feverish, quite bad really."

The fact she was looking for a plant had started to ease the knots left over from the morning -- until his brow furrowed and his mouth quirked. He was not at all ill, although he might not look his best, and he was torn on whether to be irritated at the insult or amused because if anything her faux pas was greater than his own this morning. (He still did not understand why the sick young doe had been so offended when he noted how her belly was getting round -- it meant healthy sacs, she should have been pleased...)

Amusement and curiosity won out, his ears flicked back and his mouth flattening into a thin line. "That is news to me," he drew out at last. "Whatever could be wrong?" He pretended to be gruff all the while thinking he would have to help her find the herb she sought in return for his charade.

The buck's voice was callous, rough around the edges at her suggestion and Feverfew found herself wondering if she had managed to upset him somehow. Her cheeks were starting to go red, she could feel it.

"W-well, ummm, are you sure nothing is wrong? You look awfully...tired and a little pale and you. Uh, I think you have a fever!"

She blurted out the last part hoping not to insult the buck again. If she had learned anything it was that bucks often took "weak" as an insult. Feverfew had avoided the word but it seemed as if the buck too insult. As if things couldn't get any worse, Sticky-Paws chose that moment to spring out, bouncing over Feverfew's tail and snaking up Healing Wounds' leg to perch on his head. In the damned mongoose's mouth was a clutch of feverfew.

He gave his head a shake -- only to stop when he felt tiny paws scurrying up his leg -- at her diagnosis (and her description of how he looked). A long sigh left his mouth as the mongoose took a perch on his head. What was it anyway, with damn pets taking his head as a perch? The foxbun on his back clearly did not appreciate the intruder, either, with the way she chuffed and chittered and growled. Well that made two of them.

"Yours?" he queried the doe, eyes rolling up and spotting the white blossom surrounding the yellow centers of the herb. He could not see the mongoose but he felt it. "My foxbun bites, you know," he told the pest and then decided the best thing to do was ignore it. After all telling Fluster to get down had never helped any, why would a mongoose be any different?

Turning his attention back to the doe, "I don't think I have a fever. Come to think of it, you're looking quite flushed. Perhaps you have a fever!" he returned, a hint of a smile twitching at the edge of his lips. Between the two of them, he was sure he was not the one with fever though really he didn't think she was either.

"Mine." She replied, still eying the mongoose that seemed all to proud of itself. Sticky-paws never did have any manners. She stamped her hoof as if trying to tell it to come down here right this instant. The mongoose preened his head with one paw, ignoring his flustered mistress. "Actually I think it might be good for someone to teach him his place." She said eying the pink foxbun.

The buck turned to face her and Feverfew's attention snapped back to him.

"Oh, no! No, I don't have fever. I just- uh, I have -- I'm not so good at talking to other people so my face goes read all the time really it's no problem at all, please don't worry about me!"

Whenever she got nervous, Feverfew was liable to start rambling, her words started slurring together and she talked faster and faster.

The warning sounds from the pink foxbun seemed to wilt as the kimeti conversation went on; Fluster was not accustomed to sharing and she lunged forward with a swift, firm bite of the mongoose's tail. The buck underneath the squabble did his best to remain still and focus on the doe in front of him.

"I, myself, am rather poor at--" pause, "social interaction." It briefly seemed he was done speaking and then he began anew.

"My name is Healing Wounds. This is m--" he gave a cough to change his intended my and switch to more neutral choice word, "a fine place to find herbs. Are you a healer as well?"

On top of his back and head, the foxbun began to chatter. Not that he had a clue what it was saying.

"I am not very good at talking either." Feverfew could hear her words slurring into a mess, she had to consciously remind herself to talk slower. "Ah yes! I am a healer too! I came here in search of whiteflower, it does not grow near where I usually live so we have to travel out to find it."

Stick-Paws let out hiss and Fever's head shot up. The mongoose scrambled out of the buck's hair (so that's where he was hiding!) and jumped back into towards his mistress. She felt his soft paws pull at her skin as the mongoose crawled back to rest in her hair, all the while hissing at the pink lump on Healing Wound's head.

"I-I'm sorry if Stick-Paws hurt you! He's always getting into all sorts of trouble."

Well this was real luck then, to have found a healer as awkward as he. "Ah, yes, whiteflower is a useful herb. It does grow here though it's cousin moonflower often hides it." A shame really, though he supposed it reflected life. The bad often were shadowing the good until they were hard to see.

Upon his head, the foxbun squealed -- or perhaps it was a whistle -- in victory before curling up once more on her owner's head.

"That I think is a pet trait. Fluster is a nervous ball of fluff and yet she does manage to get into the most troublesome situations," he revealed with a chuckle.

"That's a relief! You see, I'm running out of whiteflower and there seems to be a fever going around in the swamp, so many of my friends are getting sick. Feverfew chewed the inside of her lip nervously. While it was relieving to know that whiteflower did grow here, she still couldn't tell the difference between it an moonflower. Perhaps Healing Wounds would know? But she didn't want to ask him such an obvious question, she didn't want him to think she didn't understand plants it was just -- just something that slipped her mind. If only she could remember!

"Oh really? And I thought it was only this rascal…"

A fever... Now that she mentioned it he had seen a fair few kin that seemed to be suffering. Although it seemed lately, he had found himself attempting to help relieve either young mothers or naive mushroom consumers. (Neither types ever seemed to like help, either.) He gave his head a nod, it might do himself some good to make sure he had some whiteflower. "We shall both have to stock up then," he answered with a smile, glad to know what it looked like.

He turned away and took a few steps before twisting his neck, he wanted to make sure she followed. While whiteflower grew all over this area, there was one spot it was much easier to harvest -- it was tiresome to avoid getting moonflower in one's mouth, even worse when one did not realize they had. "They redeem themselves, I think. At least Fluster is quite helpful at applying salves and holding herbs," he smiled. In that, he'd taught her well. Everything else? Well he never claimed to be a pet trainer.

"Yes, fever isn't so bad but in young foals and mothers and elderly it can cause a lot of trouble. My mentor told me that there was one spring when fever swept the swamp. Many of the foals born in the winter fell ill and passed on. The previous year's early frost killed much of the whiteflower. It seems like the winters come faster and harsher recently... I suppose it's lucky that dried whiteflower is useful too though, else we'd all be in trouble. All you need to do is soak some in water and let the affected kin drink some."

Feverfew spoke as she followed the buck. He turned back and she smiled slightly, keen to show that she was following his lead. She recalled Acorn Crop's lessons vividly, even though it'd been quite a while since she'd seen her.

"I suppose you're right but," she directed a glance at the mongoose on her head, no doubt busy licking its wounded ego, "even though this guy has very handy hands, he still spends half of his time causing trouble!"
