The colt watched carefully from his vantage point deep within the brush. The small thrush hopped about on it's feet, pecking at the ground occasionally. He breathed out slowly, shifted his leg just slightly. The rustle of leaves caught the bird's attention and it raised it's head. Longclaw sucked his breath in, hoped it would fly away. It didn't. And the colt went back to waiting. The thrush was slightly out of his range but if he waited, if he was patient, it would be within striking distance soon.

He lunged, hoof landing on the thrush, pinning it down, the crunch of bone that meant he had succeeded. He bent down to pick the plump thing from the ground.

Click to show.Thump.. thump... thump - the sound of Edge's forehoof striking the ground in the kin equivalent of applause fro m where she stood in the shadow of a mangrove. She'd been watching the young colt since she first caught sight of his white tail-tuft, and had originally followed him for a good laugh at a mockery of a hunt. She hadn't at all suspected him to succeed-- inexperience made the young impatient, and the process of growth made them uncoordinated-- but now that he had, well, the doe was quite impressed.

"Well done, kiddo," she said as she approached, golden eyes gleaming. An old idea had resurfaced when his hoof had crushed bone, and he seemed like the perfect candidate for such a thing... that is if this kill wasn't some fluke. "Now, was that luck or skill?"

The colt turned back, saw the doe over his shoulder and frowned. He wasn't very fond of company, even less so of an audience. There was also a sting of pride. He hadn't sensed her, should have been able to, but hadn't. Longclaw wasn't vain, but he was fairly confident in his senses. He'd lost his awareness of the surrounding when he turned to focus on his prey. And it'd cost him.

Bending down, the colt placed the bird on the ground (for it was awfully hard to talk with a bird between his teeth), turned to face the doe.

"And what does it matter to you?" He asked, leery and suspicious.

The colt turned to her, first surprise, then mistrust in his eyes. He opened his mouth and words that could well have been her own poured out. This made her pause, rarely on the receiving end of such comebacks, her mouth curving into a half-smirk. She approved of him.

"Oh it doesn't matter particularly to me," she replied, a playful self-satisfaction in her tone, "I should say it matters more to you. If this kill," she nodded to the thrush, "was out of luck, then good luck getting more than plants to eat. But if it were out of skill, well..." at this her eyes gleamed with an almost feral light "such skill could get you very far, if it were honed."

If anything, his frown deepened. The doe sounded pleased, Longclaw could almost feel her smirk radiating outwards. He'd played straight into her hands.

"It's not the first time I've hunted."

He said, letting the implications hang in the air. Normally Longclaw would have taken the chance to slip away with his prey. He didn't like dealing with people very much, especially people like this doe who seemed to be so full of themselves. But then, her smugness wasn't ill-warranted. The colt didn't think it was possible for anyone to be so smug if they didn't have any skill to back it up.

She quirked a brow at his statement, hearing the implications but unsatisfied by them. "Hunting and killing are two different things," she replies, almost sweetly, quite amused by this little colt she has stumbled upon.

Longclaw stared at the doe, unsure of how to respond. He was confident in his abilities but did not see any need to brag about them. Why would she even care if he could hunt or not? This doe had nothing to do with him, but she seemed to take an interest in his skills.

"It takes more skill to hunt than to kill."

He couldn't help but feel that she was digging for something, and Longclaw was pretty sure that he hadn't given it to him.

Quoting here cause I don't want to triplepost in thread Dx
She chuckles then, as an adult is wont to chuckle knowingly when a child tries to speak of something he doesn't truly comprehend. "You can stalk all the little birds you want, but that means nothing if you can't bring one down in the end," she explains with a smile. "The hunt ends with the kill, but they are two processes, preparation and execution. You claim to know your preparation, but I'm curious as to the success of your execution."

Longclaw felt a flush of anger creeping up inside him. Was this doe insinuating that he could not hunt? He could, she had seen him bring down the bird herself! He gritted his teeth and stared back at the doe.

"I don't see how it's any of your business."

This time she laughed outright, but the sound was not directed at him. A smile and a shake of her head followed. A colt, no matter how skilled at hunting, was not one to pick up on insinuations, it was her own fault for not realizing as much. She might as well just spit out what she was thinking.

"It's my business because I'm considering taking on... a sort of apprentice of sorts. It has come to my attention that some colts in this swamp are being raised..." her memory flashed back to the spoiled foal being doted on by that teal doe, "well, less than satisfactorily. I was thinking of rectifying those wrongs." At this her golden eyes met his and narrowed, serious now.

"What say you to becoming an apprentice? It won't be easy, but I could teach you much." And she could just abandon him later should she find any dissatisfaction with his abilities.

Longclaw could feel his brow furrow. He didn't mean to, but there were somethings even he could not control. She wanted an apprentice? Because children weren't being raised right? He had left his own mother the moment he left his sac. It had been his choice to make. Longclaw barely knew her, but he could not imagine that his mother was unloving. She had stayed near her sacs, guarding and caring for her children.

The doe's proposition sounded like a challenge. He didn't like backing down from challenges. And plus he knew he could learn from this doe. That didn't mean he had to like her. He turned his face and stared into the doe's eyes.

"I'll do it."

"I'll do it."
The words she wanted to hear. She met his eyes, gold in gold, and nodded, her tail even giving a flick of approval at his resolve.

"Then we'll begin with your first test," she replied, wasting no time. She was smirking again, a glimmer of mischief in her eye. "Finish your lunch," a nod to the thrush, "then find me again. If you can." It would be a game of sorts, a test of his tracking skills.

Longclaw's eyes did not leave the doe's face, but he saw the slight movement of his tail form the corner of his eye. Briefly, the young colt wondered if that was a sign of approval. He followed her instructions and finished the small thrush in three bites.

"I'm done." He announced when he had finished, but the doe was already gone by then. Longclaw scowled.
