Lightning awoke with the skill only the young and startled can do. It was morning, time to get food and explore some more while the day was starting. He had seen so much already that he was ready to explode if he didn't find someone to tell it to soon. With his tail waving behind him, the foal moved with speed to find something to chase down for breakfast. He wasn't paying that much attention, so he didn't notice the buck in the area. The lizards captivated him, as he dropped his hooves to either side, trying to make it run again. The lizard was already hidden and knew not to move, even when the nose came down sniffing for it.

The clearing appeared empty but for the young foal. And yet gold eyes blinked from one of the trees; standing still, as Alder was wont to do, he was likely to go unnoticed. He wasn’t quite sure what to do about the young foal whom he’d stumbled across a few days ago; the kiokote didn’t appear to be searching for companionship, and Alder knew there were no others around for days. But he couldn’t in good conscience just leave the foal gamboling about; there’d been an increase in caimans, and Alder didn’t like the look of the larger feathered snakes that had been cropping up lately. With a soft groan he rose from the ground, shaking off leaves. “Good morning little one. Have you caught a lizard?”

Oblivious to the buck, Lightning jumped at the groan and voice. He looked up, surprised to see that voice belonged to one blended into swamp. "I think I did, but it wont move." He wasn't worried about strangers or danger really. It was fun to just live the best you can. Now that his attention was distracted from the lizard, Lightning looked at the bucks pattern. "Wow. You have a really neat pattern there." And without really warning, he shoves his nose into Alder's hoof.

“A still lizard is an invisible one – a sentiment I know quite well.” His tail flicked, making it obvious what he was he was referring to. “Someone once said that my pattern suits me because of that,” Alder chuckled, a gravelly sound like one who hasn’t laughed in a while. His gold eyes held amusement staring down at the foal. Youth was so refreshing. “I am Alder, much like the tree. What do you call yourself, little one?”

"You like to sit still a lot?" Lightning couldn't fully understand just sitting there doing nothing for long periods of time. That intrigued him, and his little tail started flipping around. "Nice to meet you Alder. I am Lightning." Still unable to sit still, he started shifting from hoof to hoof.

"Yes, I do enjoy sitting still often - it lets me see the world uninterrupted. Of course, sitting still is much easier when one is older; youth is full of energy," Alder chuckled, nudging the foal. "It's not often I meet a foal as energetic as yourself, would you care to keep an old buck company? We can, of course, walk and speak, as I would not dream of asking you to be still. Perhaps you could tell me about your lizard friend, or whatever you please." The buck turned, a shift of his head indicating the path he wanted to walk, and took a few slow steps to start the walk. It was, of course, no accident that the mossy buck knew the way he wanted to go was a calm one, relatively danger-free; he did not want the exuberant Kiokote plunging headfirst into deep water.

Lightning looked up at the buck. "You don't look that old to me. Just very tall." He was enjoying the company of Alder, just due to the fact he replied back to him and didn't mind the nose shoved into a hoof. The foal walked along side, itching to race, but holding it back. "Well, when I hatched there were lizards all around. I tried to catch them. Like this." He raced ahead and dropped to his belly. "But they scattered. By that time I was hungry."
