[PRP] Ready or Not (Tolu/Bahra)

The sun was just beginning to set, and with it, Tolu's patrol duty on the northeastern edge of Burkuteshti territory came to a close...her formal patrol duty, anyway. Now that the day's responsibilities were done, she split from the partner she'd shared rounds with and went her own way. She had been restless lately, itching for something to happen, hoping for a real fight, but things had been quiet. The gray-eyed lioness was sick of it, and decided that it was time to take matters into her own paws and remind those 'neighbors' of theirs that they were still here. They were still ready to fight at any time.

She broke no standing rules when she crossed into the unmarked no man's land between the two territories, was disobeying no real orders when she went looking for a fight. She was no longer on patrol, and what she did with her time was her own business. Of course, she risked varying degrees of disapproval if she got herself into real trouble, but she wasn't aiming to do anything truly stupid, no one-lioness attempts to rush an oasis or anything like that.

Tolu bint Saye just wanted a Qyrhy to beat on. Just one...maybe two, but that would be pushing it.

Bahra paced steadily across the desert's crust. She was beyond the Qythy border, but this generally was her habit. She patrolled further out than most did, because she was determined that they hold the land, in preparation for taking what they could from the Burku. Don't just hold what you have, stay strong to take more. This was Bahra's philosophy. Her hatred of their foe was deep seated and unshakable. They would die. They must die, so that they could live.

Unfortunately, Bahra was caught up in her thoughts of revenge, death, and retribution. The situation was prime for being ambushed, but so far from the Burku border, she hadn't seriously considered an attack, not by a single opponent anyway. A large force would have drawn her attention. But as it was, she was upwind of the other lioness and lost in her own musings, making her very vulnerable to the other female's first strike.

The smell of another lion was on the desert wind, and Tolu followed it eagerly to its source. She approached with care, crouched low as she crested a small rise. There. In the fading light, the other lioness was almost nondescript, but she knew without a doubt that she was not Burkuteshti - she would have recognized anyone from her own pride, they all had to be able to.

Tolu allowed herself a moment for a savage grin. Perfect. This was exactly what she wanted, exactly what she needed. Readying herself, she quickly stalked forward and leapt, launching herself at the other lioness with the aim of landing right on top of her, all claws and teeth.

She had no idea how it happened. One moment only the wind sighed and the sand stirred. The next moment, the world exploded into snarls, claws, teeth, and blood. Someone landed on her back solidly, throwing her to the ground as claws found purchase and teeth raked. She nearly howled at the sudden barrage, the roar born of fury and fire. Her opponent could only be of one affiliation, and that meant this was a fight for her life. Not a problem, this was what she was made for! With all her might, she fought to roll over, whether to get out from under the other feline or to simply get her claws into soft belly skin. She would not go down quietly!

From the moment she made contact, Tolu absolutely refused to let up, and when the other lioness tried to roll over, she snarled viciously and shoved her down even harder, biting at the back of her neck. She knew she had the advantage so far, and she wasn't about to let herself lose it! She would have laughed, if she hadn't been busy biting into her opponent.

Her blood thrilled through her veins. This was the start of just the fight that she had needed.

By this point, Bahra was certain that the Burku who had attacked her was female. She still couldn't see her opponent, but the scent and the weight on her back were distinctly female. Not that she had much time to react tot his information. The grip on the back of her neck tightened, fangs sinking into her tough hide. Her vision began to darken, but she fought to keep consciousness. If she should black out, her life was forfeit. She heaved in a deep breath and curled her spine sharply inward. With powerful hind legs, she reached up beyond her head, claws unsheathed, seeking to displace the attacker at the very least. At best, she'd get a score in of her own, but right now, all she wanted was this cat off her back!

With the other lioness trying so hard to get her off her back, it was only a matter of time before she succeeded in dislodging Tolu. She hung on for as long as she could, reluctant to give up the advantage being on top of her opponent provided, but she could feel her grip beginning to slip. Quickly deciding that it would be better to end this 'ride' on her own terms rather than be thrown off, she leapt off her opponent's back and spun to face her.
