Frost-Flame pulled his head out from between the fronds of a surprisingly large fern. Nope. Nothing. His jaw set in a not-quite-a-frown, he turned to the right and inspected the soft mud by a pool for hoof prints. Or anything prints, really. He would swear on his soul that he'd seen a crane-that-was-not-a-crane before the last clutch he'd fathered had been laid. Now he needed to find something else like it.
"Have you decided on a place to lay the sacs?" he asked Ashblessing, conversationally, "In this weather, we needn't worry about caiman, at least. Just an old friend." The last sentence was muttered under his breath, and spoken only half ironically. Frost was synonymous with death, so far as he was concerned. And what the Swamp was getting now was a little more than the typical winter freezes.

Ashblessing was sitting on her haunches not far away, her eyes closed in thought as as Frost-Flame searched the greenery. She was meditating, trying to gather together her energies to keep her strong for the children she was carrying. If they could manage to find a legendary, this strength would only increase.

When Frost spoke, Ashes' ears flicked forward to listen, but her eyes did not open.

"I have," she replied, her voice the same level tone it always was. "But I've come to no final conclusion. Somewhere warm and dry, perhaps, and with moss which we can surround the sacs with to keep them insulated." A thought came to the doe and she opened her eyes, trained them on Frost-Flame. "You do intend to stay and help raise them, do you not?"

"Moss," Frost-Flame tilted to the side, "I should have thought of that-" His ears went nearly straight up, and he swung his head around so fast, there was a popping sound. "Raise?" the look on his face made it clear that such a thought had never even crossed his mind, "You're thinking of raising them? That's-" Unnatural, he was going to say, but in a rare moment of forethought, decided he didn't want to stuff his hoof in his mouth. "-not how I grew up."

Frost-Flame adjusted his neck again, this time more gently. "Sacs are laid, you hope for the best, and a few seasons later..." he shrugged, "You see how things have turned out. That's the way things have been done forever. Kimeti aren't supposed to hover over their young; it's why we're born ready to fend for ourselves. You have to let the foals come to you, if they so choose, not the other way 'round.

"Sure," he went on, "if one or two or six showed up at my den, of course I'd take care of them. I'd take care of them even if they weren't mine." He screwed up his face in a way that showed he was struggling to find the right words to convey what he meant to Ashblessing. "You have to let them find their own path. Let them decide if they even need a parent. And if they do, if they want you to fill that role." He swished his tail, and repeated "That's the way things are done."

A thought occurred to him, and he cocked his head, "Were you raised?"

Ashblessing tilted her head. "My mother was present for most of my childhood. I do not know my father." She was not surprised by the buck's aversion to raising his own children -- it seemed, in fact, that she was not genuinely surprised by anything -- but she had to admit to being a little disappointed. Ah well, everything happens for a reason. "I realize that it is not exactly common to watch over one's sacs...but as I intend this to be my only clutch I would like to at least make sure that they have a decent chance at survival." She nodded her head to him and closed her eyes once more. "Hence our search."

Fish Bones was lurking in the brush, watching the pair, when the conversation took an unusual turn. Before thinking about it, or even that he's currently a foxbun, Fish Bones steps out and speaks to the buck. Some Kimeti raise their children. It is rare, I think, but it seems to be getting more common then it once was. Only after sending his thoughts does he remember he's not in Kimeti form. No matter, Fish Bones thinks privately. After all, he'd have blessed then in this form anyway, so they'd have heard him mind-speak. More so Fish Bones is concerned about not knowing what form he was in, maybe he should spend a few days as a stag and get reaquanted with that body. Unless Stags and Mares are supposed to become that used to their other forms, he wonders.User Image

Before he could respond to Ashes, Fost-Flame's attention was captured by the foxbun that approached them. The little creature informed him that raising one's young was not as uncommon as it used to be. His eyes widened, but this being the second (not the first) time he'd encountered a legendary, he didn't quite freak out.

Closing his eyes and bowing his head in reverence to the ascended one, Frost-Flame then turned back to Ashblessing. "It's not the old way, but if a legendary doesn't take issue with it, raising one's foals can't be a bad thing." He narrowed his eyes pensively, "This winter has stacked the odds against any sacs laid during the colder months. I suppose that isn't quite fair.

"If you want to watch our sacs- I'm still not sure raising is a good idea, even if it isn't bad- I'd be willing to hunt for you; maybe I could even find some winter blossoms. One less thing to worry about. They'd probably hatch a little after the trees begin to bud, so I could probably keep them warm until then when you want to stretch your legs without... influencing them with my presence." Frost-Flame looked to both Ashes and the legendary, waiting to see how they took the proposed compromise.

Ashblessing's eyes fly open at the mental words of the foxbun and she stares at the little creature unblinkingly. She has never met a legendary before and is, she fears to admit to herself, somewhat unimpressed. He is decidedly un-majestic, siting there on his haunches like one of a hundred other foxbuns Ashes has encountered in her life. The little creature seems kind and wise, though, and this assuages her initial fears.

The affect of his words on Frost-Flame erase all of Ashes' doubts. She smiles at the buck -- a rare thing for her -- and nods. "Yes, that will suffice quite nicely," she replies to him before turning her level gaze to the little foxbun. "Thank you for your words, chosen one. It is much appreciated. This is to be my first clutch, and I would like to be..." she hesitates, searching for the most appropriate word. "...prepared."

If a foxbun's vocal chords could make such a sound Fish Bones would have chuckled at this last from the doe. Then expect anything, younglings are a surprising group. Fish Bones gives the two a long look, thinking over what to say. An odd pair they seem to be, with different views on life. May your young be as determined to hold on to what is dear to them as you. Probably not what she was looking for, but important all the same.

Fish Bones watches them a moment longer, then turns and hops back into the bushes.User Image

After watching the foxbun depart, Frost-Flame says, somewhat thoughtfully, "You know, I've never seen a stag or mare in their true forms." A deeper thinker than he would have stopped to consider the implications of such an observation (or ponder the meaning of the creature's blessing), but Frost-Flame is more practical.

"So," he smiles at Ashes, "would you like to show me a few of the places you've considered four our clutch? If they're anywhere near my usual walking paths, I might have some insight as to the benefits and drawbacks of their locations."

Although the blessing itself was not exactly what she was expecting, Ashblessing feels the power of the legendary wash over her and the children she is carrying with a rush of relief. She watches the foxbun hop away into the bushes with gratitude and then turns back to Frost-Flame.

"Perhaps they prefer to go unnoticed," Ashes speculates in response to Frost's comment. "Though I admit that was not exactly what I was expecting." Gathering herself, Ashblessing stands, stretching her forelegs out before her in a sort of bowing pose much like a cat. "Still, I feel much reassured. The blessing was a good one."

Turning to the buck, Ashes casts him another of her rare smiles. "I would greatly appreciate your input, Frost-Flame," she answers. "I feel that it is almost time for them to be laid. Come, let us go find the perfect spot." With a flick of her tail, the pregnant doe trots from the clearing.
