Do you mean Japanese folklore or books by Japanese authors?
I think reading Shikibu Murasaki's The Tale of Genji is such a book and tale. A famous Japanese folktale is called "Momotaro" or sometimes, "Peach Boy". A good book to pick up, if you really want to get into some cool but old (and unpopular) tales is called Breaking into Japanese Literature.
For books by Japanese authors, if you have a lower reading level and like easy reading, I would pick up Yasutaka Tsutsui's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It's also an anime and movie too. If you have an average reading level but like some deep concepts, Haruki Murakami (Sputnik Sweetheart, 1Q84, Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore) and Banana Yoshimoto (Kitchen, Goodbye Tsugumi, Asleep) write good books. If you have a high reading level with deep concepts, Kenzaburo Oe and Yoshio Mishima are great. If you're looking more for the dramatic, relationship-dealing type of books, Amy Yamada writes some decent books too.
Hope that helps!
