Click to show. When Cue Queue finally exited the "haunted" cave, she was not alone, and it didn't take an agent of stealth like her to figure that out either: right on her heels was quite simply the angriest owlcat she had ever seen. She turned to regard it curiously, and it came no closer, but hissed and spat and occasionally yowled, strange pale-tipped grey coat rippling in the heavy October moon. The frosty effect on that nebulous colour made it look rather fittingly spectral, in fact, but an experiment hoof stuck out assured that, in the least, its claws were very solid indeed.

"Charming," she said dryly, but almost smiled. She could well empathise with the fury of this beast. But, ah, she was not into pets. "You'll have to find some other prey, I'm afraid."

And so she was on her way, but the owlcat did not cease its pursuit (nor its anger), a snarling bundle always right behind her. Her customarily silent journey was rendered rather less silent, and her amusement eventually wore thin - no, even if she had been into pets, this particular locus of noise would hardly be a suitable one. Why did it follow, she wondered, why her? With a small sigh, she acquiesced that perhaps her point of origin - and her current destination - today might well have marked her an attractive target for those of keener senses. How annoying! Now that she had figured that out, future trips would require better camouflage in that respect. But even as she ground a silent bone over that unfortunate business to be born into, her lips had to quirk at the thought that - yes, her arrival would reward both her irritants.

Ah, just the buck she had hoped to see. As she slid into the store grounds, she walked right up to the proprietor: the eponymous Rise of Rise and Co's Preserved and Exotic Foods. Her mother's boss and consequently in some distant familial employment way, hers as well, when she bothered to run for them. And soon to be owner of one angry owlcat - unless he pickled it instead, which was his wont with most animals. She was sure it was a pathological problem, but one that served everyone well…except, of course, for the pickled.

"Special delivery," a slightly sinister smile.

"Cue," Rise acknowledged, turning with interest. Dark never really said very much about her children - his intensifying biological ticking and a keen interest in the concept of parentage and family hadn't revealed much, instead making the sweet girl quite, quite panicky. Nevertheless they seemed to have turned out very capable, much like their mother, and at times, far more self-assured than their mother.

Sometimes he marvelled at how her mother's markings passed on to Cue (sometimes indulgently wondering how his and Grey's, alas, whenever she would come 'round to the thought of having children, might turn out), but his eyes were drawn to the hissing owlcat who'd caught up behind her. "I see - ah Cue, you know how people feel about us pickling pets." Not only did people get rather uncomfortable with that, this one looked rather different, far less sedate than some of the ones he'd seen, it was likely to be quite lean...

"Oh, I didn't bring it here for pickling. Though," she added, thoughtfully, staring at the creature in question break away to begin a fight with one of the fruit-sunning rocks, "you could try, if you ever get close enough to." It really was a strangely mesmerising sight, a ghostly owlcat attacking a rock.

"I brought it here," she finally tore her gaze away to smile thinly at Rise, "as a gift."

"A gift?" Rise returned a broad smile, that of a guileless godfather regarding what seemed to be his blameless god-daughter with good intent - yes, through this feeling of being irrevocably moved, he seemed to tune out the animal throwing itself about viciously. "Cue, I..." he sighed pleasantly over the yowl of a furious owlcat. "Cue, I'm not good with pets, as I'm sure you're aware....but I am very touched indeed."

"Yes, I know," she said carelessly, "I thought perhaps it was time you learnt." Her attention had returned to the owlcat, who was now fighting three sunning rocks at the same time. All that anger in one little body - he would make a good addition to this dysfunctional place. "He'd make it rather difficult for you to eat him, I think," she continued, "so he's a good candidate to start with."

Rise chuckled at her (what sounded like an) opinionated statement - Cue was evidently the princess of Dark's clutch that he'd met; learn indeed! But her motives were thoroughly good, certainly...and it can't have been easy to find and lead such a lively little creature back to this place. "Still," he said, honestly dubious about how long he'd be able to keep salting thoughts out of his head, "I can't quite imagine myself with a pet pet...And we do so much meat skinning here." He looked down, contemplative, as angry claws raked across stone with a sharp screech. "The cat might..." he struggled to find pet-owner emotions. "...be uncomfortable."

"Nonsense, meat skinning will make it feel right at home," she said, and rather believed it, too. With considerable effort, she looked decisively way from the owlcat versus rock spectacle to scan the rather deserted grounds. How strange. Most of the store bunch were diurnal folk, or at least returned to roost by nightfall. The moon was already well in the sky, yet none but Rise were here to be seen. Pity, she mused, she would have liked to witness their reactions to their angry new tenant...but at least it was much easier to work on Rise alone. Nevertheless, "where's everyone?"

"Salt collection and a series of experiments," he nodded at her, distractedly stacking up some dried corpses that the owlcat had knocked over in its flurry of attacks. "We're just expanding so well now." Rise was terribly excited by everything falling into place, the relentless business of the business. A large part of later development came, of course, from his ridiculously intelligent Grey. "And my lady is out on her nightly investigations, as you know." He allowed himself a moment to be awash with utter adoration, a slightly goofy look upon his face - well, youngsters needed some exposure to this sort of sentimentality now and then...but anyhow. "It would be so strange, wouldn't it Cue, for everyone to come back and find me with an owlcat? Utterly bizarre, even," he said with a kindly smile.

His lady. The utterly besotted smile across his face almost made her own lips twist in distaste. Moonfrost-like-Ashes was an unusually pretty doe, Cue had noted even as a filly, but the depth of Rise's schmoopy obsession was gag-worthy. She was on the verge of abandoning the owlcat to whatever fate it would encounter, petting, pickling, or otherwise, just to escape the schmoopiness - but Rise had regained his sanity...and the key finally dawned upon her.

"Noooo..." she slowly said, "it wouldn't be bizarre at all...after all, it's a rather fetching shade of...grey, don't you think? A rather fetching gradient from grey to blue." Sort of. Maybe. She wasn't sure, it never stood still long enough to testify to the latter.

His head turned to regard the mostly-feline being snarling at an offensive rock, and scrutinised it as it bounced back and forth - yes, its raised, furry hackles in the moonlight did invoke a warming sensation in his chest, such a silvery sight brought back childhood fancies (his one fancy) of a young colt. Its terse position while it engaged in a standoff with the rock was also strangely charming. "Cue," he solemnly stated with the tone of a buck breaking down, "it is a pretty creature, with the most astonishing coat, but..."

But? Even after appealing to the worst of his sensibilities he still had the presence of mind to offer a but? Cue was almost impressed - her boss had more mettle (or at least, self-preservation instinct) than she would have given him credit for. Just too bad that it was to her detriment right now, but she still had a trump card to play. It was hardly a secret that Rise had been talking of foals lately - of course, with Summer Fades around, nothing in this shop was a secret - but his lady was hardly so susceptible. Cue, quite simply, had no limits. "I've heard my mother say," she declared airily, as if it had nothing to do with the subject at hoof, "that she would never have had us if it weren't for Far."

"Your mother didn't tell me that," he said, almost ruefully - he liked to think that his employees could be very open with him - but these were her children, and of course she might feel more comfortable speaking to the results about the cause. "That's rather interesting, Cue. Did she say why?"

Perhaps that's because she never actually said it, flitted darkly across her mind, before she continued, "Oh, you know - once you've had the experience of having a little life depend on you," never mind that the cheetah could probably have lived very well in the wild anyway, "the thought of several little lives depending on you becomes much less...daunting," never mind that most kimeti hardly worried about little lives depending on anyone, the way sacs were strewn willy-nilly across the swamp, "and it's so much easier to start with a pet than a clutch."
PostPosted: Wed Nov 09, 2011 2:50 am

"I see. That does make some sense..." He mulled, contemplative as he watched the owlcat attempt to sink its beak into stone. Rise was hardly fazed by the idea of a clutch - after all, he did watch over an extended family (staff force) of Kimeti, and nowhere else could be more ready with rations for all ages. Surely sweet, helpless foals would be less trouble than what someone like Fade got up to? In other words, Rise was Ready. Rise did not need a pre-parenting course. "...but again, my dear, we do run a rather large business and I look after all of you, so perhaps that sort of training is not quite necessary," he concluded chipperly.

"Yes, yes, I can see that," she said smoothly, eyes glittering under an innocuous veil of lashes, "you are quite ready for the responsibility of a clutch. I suppose you wouldn't need a pet to start off with, then - you'd be well-prepared to receive the joyous blessings of little foals at any time...just - such a pity your lady doesn't quite feel the same."
