.[Introduction - What's this for?].

  • Welcome ..... to the interest thread for the Ushirkino Watembezaji and Achana revive!

As you probably already know the Unity Walker pride and the Achana coalition became inactive and were disbanded within the last month. The in-character explanation for the pride disbands was a second sweeping plague. Well, we're running with that idea exactly as it is and using it to revive and restore both groups together as one. If you own an existing, returning, or hopeful member of any of these then please keep reading! We're also hosting a giveaway to kick start the revive, so if you don't have a spare SOA to throw our way but would LIKE to, read on! You'll get your shot!

    User Image

That's right, we have thirteen SOA waiting for good homes, not to mention two litters that will be given away as well! Please read on if you're interested!

.[What Happened?].

  • The ..... Ushirkino Watembezaji had survived deep within the depths of the jungle for fourteen generations, spanning over an unknown number of years. The Wataawa (Priests and storytellers) tell the tale of the humble beginnings of their clan.

In lands far from the humidity of the tropical forest tucked within the confines of a long since revived crater a lioness gave birth within the safety of her den to a set of twins: One male and the other female. The little female's colors were soothing dark blue hues, and she bore white markings that seemed to resemble the swirling, surging clouds that painted the skies above. Her brother was of more humble coloration, having a coat of deep brown with touches of sand around his eyes and streaking through his hair and tail tuft. His markings were sharp, rigid, and up-jutting like the mountains to the South, which seemed to touch the very sky itself and dance among the clouds.

Their parents were loving, but thought nothing overly special of the markings or the fact that these twins were mirror opposites of one another in everything they did. As time went on the twins grew, and of course eventually they came into adulthood. Their parents passed on but the twins remained by the side of one another, feeling an unspoken bond that was stronger with loyalty than most others. Despite their differences they very rarely, if ever, fought.

One night, the sister heard a voice, strong and gentle, speaking to her in the form of dreams. It spoke of her "children" as though she (for the voice was female) had been a mother for ages upon ages. In that dream the dark colored female saw the wonders of the heavens, as though through the eyes of the stars. She learned many things about the skies such as how to understand the words spoken in whispers through the breeze, or the warnings shouted through the howls of the storms.

The following night it was her brother that had a similar dream. In that dream he also met the winged lioness and learned many great secrets of the Earth, and had a glimpse of the land from the highest peak of the mountain tops and the lowest plains and valleys.

After sharing their visions with one another they knew that they had been chosen to deliver a message. Taking a few along and leaving behind their birth-pride they began to seek out others. They soon formed a small pride of lions that felt a similar, if not less dynamic, calling. That is how the Unity Walkers were formed. Following the goddess' guidance they selected a king and queen to rule the pride, and took shelter in the ferns and lush grasses of the humid jungle. There they lived in undisturbed unity for many, many years.

The twins that brought their family together went by the names of Enzi and Bucho, and they became the very first Wataawa (Priests). As such they are well known through Ushirkino Watembezaji history. Their story is passed down from generation to generation through the Elders, priests, and storytellers.

Things went well for many years before trouble began to brew. A whisper began to spread that the sky (Mbingu) members considered themselves to be above their earth (Ardhi) brothers and sisters. Supposedly the sky were closer to the goddess and therefore were held in higher favor than the "lower" ones. That didn't sit very well with the Ardhi, and soon squabbles began to break out. Before too much longer they began taking sides and a divide began within the pride. The goddess became very displeased and the priests were unable to hear her voice or see her in dreams, for she left them for a time. During the divide, one of the Pride's priests died and the remaining sibling saw no sign of more twins being born to continue the tradition of twin seers to fill the roles of Wataawa. The pride began to break apart. Four generations passed before finally their goddess returned. As a sign of forgiveness the pride was once more blessed with twins after four generations without. There was more hardship, however, for just barely recovering from the divide they were also beset with the plague that made it's way across the Southern tip of Africa. They lost many more members during that time including all but one of the royal family. All that remained was the hunter, Matifu, the heiress, Kauta, Matifu's sister (Tanashita), the twin seers (Mteule and Mteuli), one of the cubs juveniles, his maned wolf companion, and the dying priestess. As soon as the twins were of age they were taught the ways of the pride, and once of age the brothers were sent out to find what remained of their disbanded members.

Mteuli and Mteule searched high and low, their pride desperately needing new blood and old alike. They returned with a few new members, as did Matifu during a hunt outside of the pride lands. Numbers slowly began to climb and all seemed well, for a royal litter had finally been born, small though it was.

For a short time under Kauta's reign things began to stir. For the first time in Unity Walker history a priest stepped up to lead alongside the queen and his twin took on the role of active ambassador, actually leaving not only his twin's side, but the pride lands in order to recruit fresh blood. Since then the hierarchy has changed completely. Upepo, son of Kauta and Mteule, married Vinaya (formerly of the Pridelands). A second plague swept through the lands, unfortunately, cutting the young king's reign short. He ordered the surviving members that had not contracted the illness to leave the lands to ensure their survival. He himself stayed behind along with his father who had also fallen ill. What became of them is unknown, and once again the Unity Walkers were scattered to the wind and are forced again to begin anew.

Father and son remaining alone, before he succumbed to the plague the former queen's consort, priest Mteule, had a vision of the rebirth of the pride. Change would come on the wings of Sacrifice.

Or at least, on the painted wings of her eldest son...

.[What Does This Mean? What about my SOA?].

  • If ..... you had a member of either the Achana or the Unity Walkers then you're welcome to join the new Unity Walkers, if you wish. The two groups were already neighbors and allies, since they've both suffered from this tragedy they'll take the opportunity to come together and bolster their numbers, everyone wins.

In a way you could say the two groups are taking their alliance to the next level. It's hardly a seamless merge, there will likely be clear lines, but everyone should get along well. There is no resentment between the groups. The Achana don't really practice any beliefs where as the Unity Walkers are steeped in tradition. The new leaders offer a unified front, however.

On the Achana side the leading pair (Toh Ni and her mate Huang) are steping down. where as three members of their council will be stepping up to fill the vacant spots of leadership. The Unity Walkers are swapping their royal leadership with the Achana's council system, but following in their other traditions the leaders will be three, each one a seer. The council will serve to guide the pride along, see to their needs, discuss any major developments or courses of action, and take the roles that the wataawa once filled. These are just some of the changes that you can read more about in the following posts.

So the big question: What does all of this mean for your SOA?

If you own a member of the Achana or Unity Walkers you're free to say that they disbanded before or during the plague, died because of the plague or the following shortage of food, or that they stayed with their respective group and managed to stick it out.

For the Achana's part Toh Ni would have eventually made the difficult decision to lead her group to the Unity Walker territory, giving up their home to escape the lingering sickness. The Unity Walkers were waiting for them, Mteule having had a vision of their coming because of Haki's return (he was born to the Unity Walkers but disbanded as an adolescent). Upepo, the acting king, ordered the surviving members of the Unity Walkers to find the Achana and together find new lands to call home. He and his father, Mteule, stayed behind.

The two groups settled their plan of action and after certain events it will be agreed that they'll head higher up North instead of South, where they suspected the plague was carrying through. They'll travel through other lands that have been abandoned and eventually settle down at Mount Elgon. There it's highly likely that members of the former Achana will choose to settle down in the forest at the foot of the mountain near the entrance, while the Unity Walkers will take advantage of the mountain's bounty. Both are free to come and go as they please.

We'll be picking up with the pride having settled into their new home. Returning members will be assigned new jobs and ranks (if applicable). They'll also be taking in those that wish to join their ranks, designating areas for different purposes. More information will be available in the contest sections once they're posted.

    TL;DR: To summarize.

    • Brand new ranks and a new hierarchy
    • No more royalty, both groups will be led by a council of three
    • The pride is gaining two new patrons
    • The Unity Walkers beliefs and traditions will become the default since Achana has none
    • The Unity Walkers will take the mountain, the Achana will take the forest
    • Where SOA settle is based primarily on preference, it's still one united group
    • Your SOA may either migrate with the group or become separated during the trip if you want them to disband
    • NO ONE will be left behind aside from Mteule and Upepo
    • Fresh new blood for both groups, new bloodlines
    • They'll be joining together to migrate to new pride lands
    • A completely fresh start with both new and old traditions

.[New Territory].

  • Some ..... habits die hard, and for these two groups that is particularly true. The Achana was mostly made up of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and of course hybrids. They'd grown accustomed to life in the jungle. The Unity Walkers had a similar terrain that they called home, their valley protected by rock walls and forest all around. Mount Elgon offers both new and familiar landscape, rich with opportunity.

"Mount Elgon is a hugely important water catchments area. Its forests receive up to 3000mm of rain each year, which they store and release to support flora, fauna and more than a million Uganda’s. Elgon's water is equally important to many Kenyans, for Mount Elgon is bisected by the international boundary. The mountain's natural vegetation, and its role as a giant biological sponge, is protected by Mount Elgon National Park on both sides of the border."

Mount Elgon (an ancient, inactive volcano) boasts forest, savannah, a system of caverns, as well as one of the largest known calderas. At its base a lush forest has grown, with flowing rivers and a thick canopy. This area is teeming with life and the perfect place for the Achana to resettle themselves. There are also opportunities to be had for those that wish to try a new home, however.

The Unity Walkers will continue into the heart of the mountain itself, making home within the rock primarily instead of simply living within its protective circle. There is ample space for denning. The caldera serves as the primary hunting grounds, with Jackson Lake and several other bodies of water attracting prey for miles within its territory. The cave system itself is littered with holes from cave in's, providing several underground lakes for drinking, bathing, and socializing. There are several openings for the pride to take advantage of when coming and going from the caldera as well, making it ideal for bringing food in and out of the caves. Those that wish to are also welcome to make home in the caldera itself, but there are strict rules in place against over hunting the lands since that area is the pride's primary food source.

Within the mountain there are several areas that are communal places for the pride. We have a map in the works but for the time being they are as follows:

1.) Communal Den A: A large cavern where the northwest corner of the roof has caved in. Sunlight, moonlight, and starlight all stream in over the lake here, and the uneven, rocky area serves as one of the pride's many communal gathering spots as well as a communal den. Water flows between thin crevices in several places, and there are even rocks leading up like steps that act as a speaking platform or a diving spot for playing. Cubs are not allowed up these stone platforms until they're good swimmers. A reliable nanny (sometimes two) will always be posted at the base of the "steps" to ensure there aren't any unfortunate accidents. No exceptions.

      User Image -- WIP

2.) Communal Den B: There is no water supply in this area, it is simply a cavern with a moderately leveled ceiling and multiple caves or tunnels, most of which are dead ends that simply run deep. These serve as dens for those that prefer to sleep within closed off areas, similar to the caves that were found in the valley walls in the Unity Walker's old territory. These dens are nearest to the entrance.

3.) Communal Lake: Like the first communal den this area is the pride's second largest underground water source. This is another social-hot-spot. The water is shallow enough around the edges for playing, but deep enough to the right for cubs to swim, where parents can easily keep an eye on them. It is NOT diving friendly, however, since it's not only too shallow, but there are no paths that lead to the ledges. Adults usually lounge around talking and young ones are allowed to play in the waters.

      User Image

4.) The Shrine: Unlike typical shrines this place is both sacred and freely accessible to both clans. The only area of the shrine that is off limits is clearly marked by the rocks leading to the waterfall. Beyond the waterfall is a cavern shrouded in shadows only as far as the mortal eye can see. Beyond that no one but the gods know, as that is where their den lies. No mortals are allowed to step further than the last rock leading to the waterfall. Other than that the shrine is open for visitation and use. The only exception to this is when the council convenes here to consult the gods in private.

Festivals will often be held on the shore of the shrine where their patrons are free to observe from behind their watery veil if they wish. There is a clear view of the sky, though with the forest nearby it is a bit of a crowded space.

5.) The Forest: The Achana clan makes its home here, though both clans will come and go freely (especially as the Unity Walker clan was not originally made for cave and plains life, but long for their old forest home) and some festivals may be held in these lands as well. The forest is much like their jungle home. While the trees tend to run a bit more abundant and thin it is no less green and vibrant. There are many water sources thanks to it's location at Mt. Elgon, lush with waterfalls and pools. There are many branches friendly to the leopard or part leopard species, dens on the ground for cheetahs, lions, and their hybrids as well. Prey tend to run smaller, such as warthogs.

User Image User Image User Image

      Prey:
      • Warthog
      • Greater Kudu
      • Aardvarks

6.) The Caldera: This is the primary hunting spot, and when weather permits it this is where the pride will come together to eat the large kills the hunters have made. Pride members are free to hunt here, Achana included if they really wish it (but there should be no need for this since the Achana clan has the whole of their forest and the lands around them to hunt). Gatherings and festivals may be held here, such as the Full Moon Festival that the Unity Walkers practice since they have a gorgeous, clear view of the sky. Festivities that are not hosted at the shrine will be held at the caldera lake instead. Pride members are allowed and welcomed to den in the caldera if they wish, alone or with their families. There are small outcroppings of rocks and some areas in the lower edges of the rim that are ideal for denning.

User Image User Image User Image
User Image User Image User Image

      Prey:
      • Gemsbok
      • Aardvarks
      • Lesser Kudu
      • Cape Buffalo (Rare)

7.) The Entrance: There isn't any thing particularly noteworthy about the entrance except that the forest lies between it and the rogue lands. There is a freshly streaming waterfall that falls over the large opening that leads into the cave system of the Unity Walker clan. One may pass through dryly on either side, or just shake themselves dry once through. SOME members of the pride (coalition) believe that for new members this is symbolic of washing themselves clean of any of their unwanted past to begin new lives, however, since both clans are typically accepting and not all will feel this is a necessary step it isn't a formally practiced belief so much as a new sort of superstition that some may choose to believe.

      User Image

1.) The Savannah (Drylands): Despite their name these lands are home to many creatures as well, and not entirely dry. They experience weather typical to their type, however, though perhaps with slightly more frequent rainfall due to their proximity. All types of savannah fairing fauna and flora can be found here, such as meerkats, jackals, cheetahs, and rogue lions in the further areas. With three gods looking over them the pride lands and their borders remain clearly marked and protected by illusions to dissuade trespassers that would intend harm.

.[The Unity Walker].

  • Ushirkino Watembezaji ..... beliefs are both simple and complex. They have always believed in the trinity of earth, sky, and the balance of unity that ties all living creatures together. You cannot have one without the other. They are not and never have been pacifists, however. If anything they should be considered a lawful neutral group. They practice exile, not execution. They celebrate new life, mourn death, and believe in the cycle that they liken to the phases of the sun. New life is the dawn, youth is the rise to its highest peak, the sun's gradual setting is the weathering of one's body and spirit until eventually it returns to the earth where it belongs. The body becomes one with the earth, grass, and sometimes even other creatures-- scavengers --fertilizing the ground over time no matter how small their contribution. The soul moves on to the stars above, so while one may be born with the spirit and nature of either earth, sky, or both they believe that the soul and body are unified, and death is the proper passage to return all of themselves to that from whence they came.

Traditionally Unity Walkers are born with coats that have a solid base color and tribal looking markings that embody either sky or earth attributes, such as jagged markings like mountains, gentle, swirling curls like clouds or wind, rarely spattered speckles like stars, or rolling lumps and sharp peaks like hills and valleys. Blues, browns, grays, blacks, greens, earthy reds, purples, and the rare yellow, pink, or orange make up typical colors for the Unity Walkers descended from the old bloodlines.

They have no prejudice against any colors or markings, hybrids, adolescent breeding, and they do NOT practice marriage. They do practice lifemating, but this is left entirely up to the couple in question. They do NOT practice taking multiple mates, typically lions mate with lions, and the pride as a whole-- traditionally --is heterosexual. They don't practice discrimination, this is simply how it's always been to date. Those that have encountered outsiders or come from an outside lifestyle might not be surprised, but please keep in mind that the Unity Walkers were always a more secluded pride. Don't take it personally if they're surprised by some things. They didn't even know hybrids existed until the Achana moved in next door (this should also demonstrate that they're a generally very tolerable group. Live and let live is what they practice.).

For that same reason it should be noted that harmful presences would not be welcomed. Among the things that they do not tolerate there is actually fairly little: Incest, *****, abusive relationships, general violent or confrontational and hostile behavior, and relationships with other classifications (canines with felines, reptiles with canines, rodents with felines, etc.).

.[The Achana: How they fit in].

  • Overall ..... the Achana's role in all this could be considered guard-duty. They will have reinforcements from the Unity Walkers as needed, but they don't cohabitate with the lion pride so much as they're remaining neighbors and acting as the guards and scouts. Over time this might evolve into something more formal until it truly IS a seamless merge, but for now they're simply trying what they feel will work best. The Unity Walkers will leave the Achana to practice their ways as they will, they are not required to participate in the Unity Walker traditions or beliefs, and the Achana will more or less be allowed to continue as they have been, though from now on both groups follow the same leadership. Think of them as two separate clans acting as one whole.

This coalition was primarily founded to be a safe haven for hybrids and hybrid sympathizers, however, we also accept and welcome full breeds of the feline variety. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, servals, and also various other familiars have always been welcome.

Since the coalition was founded just recently they really don't have much history to speak of. They were more of a band of felines than any formal group, no traditions, no particularly noteworthy history, just a leadership and council system. They were known, however, for being openly accepting. There was very little that the Achana wouldn't tolerate and typically it ran along the same vein as the Unity Walker's. They did not accept canines as members into their ranks and likewise they do not practice breeding with them or other non-feline species. The Unity Walkers were known for accepting canines (or lupines) into their ranks, but because of where they live it wouldn't be ideal for them to settle down in the forest with the Achana.

The Achana are accepting of all colors, gender, hybrid or full breed, mating practices (aside from forbidding incest, *****, non-consensual, breeding outside of the feline class, and abusive relationships), and the freedom to come and go from the coalition lands, so long as the leaving individuals are not A.) Putting them in danger, B.) Cubs or juveniles unaccompanied by a parent or adult, or C.) Causing trouble for their group.

.[The Alliance].

  • It's ..... already been covered a bit in the information above, but if this is the first place you came to read about then here's the run down.

The Achana and the Unity Walkers will remain two separate entities for the time being. Over the next ten or so generations there will likely be merges and blending until they become one cohesive unit, but for the time being they are two allied groups choosing to work together for the common goal of survival and peace.

The Achana will be given the forest at the foot of the mountain to call home, but they are also free to come and go through the rest of the territory so long as they're respectful of their neighbor's beliefs while there. This means that all the UW ask is that their ways be respected, not purposely trounced upon. Members of the Achana that take multiple mates are welcome, but they're expected to practice the "live and let live" stance on any matters of differing opinions. Likewise, if a member of the Unity Walkers decides they wish to denounce their traditions and ways then they are free to-- sometimes asked to --leave. Members of the Unity Walkers are still allowed to believe what they want, the only time that a member is exiled is when they cause disruption to the Unity Walkers (or the Achana) themselves. Trouble makers will NOT be tolerated, IC'ly or OOC'ly.

On a similar note: If your SOA does not believe in the UW beliefs they're still welcomed in their ranks, just like before the merge. For an example see Muroki (the King of the Dawnwalkers). He practiced Dawnwalker beliefs, and though the ideals were different they avoided any clashing or confrontations by being respectful of one each others' differences. Muroki was allowed to go out and practice his morning prayer undisturbed while the Unity Walkers slept in, similarly he was not required to attend any gatherings or rituals that he didn't wish to. Let's all be reasonable and get along, both IC'ly and OOC'ly.

.[Joining Information & Form].

  • Membership ..... will be closed sometime after the contests close, at a date yet to be determined. You'll have until we announce that the application has been submitted to post join/stay requests. After that any former members of either side will be considered disbanded and will have to reapply and rejoin IC'ly and OOC'ly, including a new joining RP.

If you're interested in either staying, joining, switching "sides", or disbanding this is the section that you'll need. We're hoping to get things rolling in character as soon as possible, but first we have some contests to host. Once those have been held and prizes given out (and winners have had time to post the appropriate forms here) we'll submit the application. As SOON as the event is done and the pride/coalition is settled we'll open membership to everyone again.

Once all the information is posted and we've gotten closer to posting the application you are welcome to RP, but we have one request! Please wait until the contest is closed. We'll need time to judge entries and since we're required to have five RP's we don't want to waste any.

Also please note: To keep things simple both Achana AND Unity Walker will go by the new ranking system (with accompanying clans).

  • The ..... first segment of the contest will be for formerly disbanded members of the Unity Walkers. These lions are direct descendents of members that disbanded during the first plague. Some were raised like rogues with only stories of their heritage, others were taught strictly and raised with the ways of the Unity Walkers as best as their parents could manage. Most of them grew up together and have formed tightly knit bonds with one another. That doesn't mean they're a giant clique, however. Each member of this group has their own thoughts and opinions, and like any group of friends they are prone to disagreements.

Being raised in other lands has had an impact, despite some of their parents best efforts to replicate aspects of home. Despite their parents disagreement on upbringing techniques these lions get along very well. Think of them as a group of young adults that all attended elementary school and high school together. Some of them may be older than the others as well, not all the litters being born at the same time.

This particular group of thirteen decided to split from the rest of their splinter group and venture off to the lands of their birth to see it for themselves. Can anyone say COLLEGE ROAD TRIP?! Whose who, what they'll find, and how they respond to it will be determined through the contest. We'll be looking to provide a varied dynamic.

.[RP Contest 3: Litter #1].

  • The ..... parents of this litter are Isuzu (mother) and Umande (father). While Isuzu isn't originally a member of the Unity Walkers Umande is in fact a direct descendent. His father, Kanzai, was a member of the sky clan in his early prime that disbanded during the divide due to his personal pride. His mother was a member of the Mistweavers in their hay day. Isuzu is a rogue lioness, older sister to Tunu-hazina. Her mother was a rogue and her father was Kamikiel of the Pridelands.

These two met while Umande was traveling from his home with the new Mistweavers (The "Ghost" pride) in search of his other older sister. Isuzu was looking to follow her mother's example and start a family so... she asked. Umande was happy to help, simply put.

Umande has since gone on his way again and is making home in the Tuait-tekem while Isuzu goes about her business. She'll be recruited by the passing group and birth her cubs in the newly unified pride.

You'll be given several opportunities for cubs depending on the size of the roll, but there will also be conditions to be agreed to.
