So yeah, I'm sittin there, slightly intoxicated, and watching the Sonic Rainboom episode, and I'm sittin there thinkin...is she really going faster than the speed of sound? Well I tapped into my inner physics nerd and figured it out: Question: Did Rainbow Dash actually break the sound barrier with her "sonic rainboom"? Assumptions: 1) Gravity on Equestria is equivalent to that of Earth 2) The atmosphere of Equestria is equivalent to that of Earth 3) The speed of sound on Equestia is equivalent to that of Earth 4) A falling pony in the spread eagle position has approximately the same terminal velocity as a human doing the same on Earth. First things first, we have to determine total distance traveled: Now we have our distance, next is to determine Rainbow Dash's final velocity: So assuming Dashy was accelerating at a constant rate, her max speed should be about 166.812m/s, and seeing as the speed of sound is about 340.29 m/s we can therefore conclude tha- Well yes, but since she WASN'T going supersonic I see no reason to- No, it's completely unnecessary and... CHRIST, FINE!!! So there you go...Dashy is either going 166.812m/s, or Mach 2, take your pick...I don't even care anymore...ima go lay down... Edit: Ok now that I'm rested and...sober...I fixed it for Dashy's final velocity...she still didn't break the sound barrier...

Kaptain K Rool This guy beat ye ta' doin' this, he also got free pony toys fer doin' it Aww...I want free pony toys...he also did 12 degrees, which gave him a vastly different answer. Edit: I checked his calculations, and he got the right answer assuming the angle is actually 12, so really we just need to find out what the real angle of the mach cone is.

This is a universe where the moon comes up due to an Ensemble Darkpony and the sun rises due to a troll.
Physics was overwhelmed by cuteness long ago.

Thus "overthinking it" xp Actually, I think you are underthinking it. You are taking the lazy step of assuming that Equestria runs on the same rules as Earth. Details in the show reveal this is not true (Clouds not moving on their own, celestial bodies requiring moving across the sky, magic, Pinkie Pie, ect). Truly overthinking it would be analysing the series and using it to derive a new set of physical laws for Equestria.

Actually we do know that clouds and the like can and do move on their own (Everfree forest, rainbow dash having to clear the sky in the first episode, etc...) plus the laws of physics can't be radically different on Equestria, because if they were then the flora, fauna and weather of the world would be radically different, and for the most part, they are the same, implying that the laws of physics act more or less as they do on earth. The only thing radically different is the raising of the sun and moon, implying a Geocentric universe.

Just going to say something, She may have been travelling faster in method one, as well. They aren't on earth, so who knows what the gravitational coefficient is in equestria, you dig? Also, just for the sake of argument, this is a show where two days passed in half an hour. So time may not be relevant. Third fix, that's pretty bad, I did not see your assumptions there, so just ignore my first comment. The second one still applies however.

How quickly a "day" passes is irrelevant when talking about time. Keep in mind that the length of a day in Equestria is not dictated by some constant, like earth, but rather by the will of a god-queen. Physics doesn't care about how we perceive time, it cares about actual time. Also we can assume Equestria's gravity and atmospheric composition, are at least roughly equivalent to that of Earth, otherwise we would expect to see radically different flora and fauna, where as most flora and fauna are nearly identical to that of Earth, albeit with heightened intelligence...and magic...

TANRailgun The Living Force Rarity is adorable. That is all. Well duh 3nodding Of the Mane 6, I think Twilight, Dash, and Rarity are tied for first place. Then Pinkie Pie. Then Fluttershy. Then Applejack. Top favorite 3 characters are Scootaloo, then Dash-Rarity tie. Twilight Sparkle just doesn't get enough screen time. Her snark is off the chain.

Of the mane 6, Rarity is my favorite, which wasn't always the case, she used to be my least favorite, but they've done a wonderful job of developing her, and I think she stands now as the most complex of the mane 6....but unfortunately she's not in my top 3....she's number 4....the top three are: Vinyl Scratch, Luna, and Octavia...then Rarity...don't judge... I remember when Pinkie Pie was your favorite, what happened with that? She just get too annoying?
