"Divide, CO - A beautiful, pint-sized senior dog named Mystery is lucky to be alive today.

The unique looking dog with the long muzzle, upright ears, and partial black mask on her face - was unceremoniously thrown from a moving vehicle on Wednesday.

The little dog was thrown from the vehicle as it travelled along a busy highway to Ute Pass.

Mystery was fortunate - the vehicle directly behind the car that she was thrown from contained alert, caring passengers who were able to stop before running the small dog over.

The couple, who had been heading out for a camping trip, was able to pick Mystery up in a blanket and transport her to the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter (TCRAS).

From TCRAS,

'The dog, only about 13 pounds, white with unusual black facial markings, a short tail and long thin face—possibly a terrier mix-- could not stand or walk and appeared to be quickly going into shock. She was immediately transported by shelter staff to a nearby vet for an evaluation.

After an exam and several x-rays it was determined that she had several fractures in her pelvis and a severe older break in her left rear leg. She was also estimated to be about 11 years old, and, except for the considerable injuries, in excellent health.'

The shelter is unsure whether Mystery sustained her injuries in the highway incident, or if she was injured before and someone chose to throw her away...

Mystery is recovering from her injuries and TCRAS reports that she is in good spirits - and is "enjoying" the attention that she is currently receiving.

The shelter intends to adopt little Mystery out to a good home as soon as she is well enough.

Any financial donations for Mystery’s medical care can be made directly to TCRAS in person or via PayPal on the website.

Please indicate that the donation is for “emergency medical care”.

If donations exceed the need for this darling dog, the rest will remain in a fund for the next special animal that arrives at the shelter with significant needs.
