"China -- Around 30,000 of dogs from Jiangmen city have been saved from slaughter at the hands of government officials thanks to the caring people of China.

Late last month, chinese officials issued a notice stating they were banning all dogs in three of Jiangmen’s districts. Dogs found in the banned areas on August 26 would be confiscated and killed. “The reason for the notice was to prevent rabies for human safety and to establish a civilized city,” reported the PR Newswire last Thursday.

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, “There is no animal welfare legislation in China which means that to cull dogs in the name of rabies prevention, men with clubs would scour the streets clubbing, beating and bludgeoning dogs to death, sometimes right in front of the dog owner.”

When the public heard about the ban, they were outraged. “Millions of messages of condemnation, concern and plea flooded the online forums, blogs and social networking sites in China,” reported the PR Newswire. Government officials bowed to public pressure on August 3rd and called off the dog cull.

Congratulations to the people of China for saving their beloved canine companions."
