Enrollment

The office this brilliant Webday morning was punctuated by a strange sort of ruffling sound.

The office Shredder looked left and right. To their left, a gnome, muttering something about skitters as they mopped up the floor. To the right, a... large blue thing draped over the desk. This large blue thing had been occupying their property for quite a while now, and the Shredder had tried all sorts of methods to pester, cajole, and otherwise harass the Blue Thing until it left, but no such luck.

However, today there would be none of this. The Shredder was out on a mission.

It was on a diet.

Hellma would wonder a few days later why the Acceptance Bin seemed extra-ordinarily overweight.

(Deep Ones are Lovecraftian fish-men, but could be conflated with legends of finfolk or Babylonian fishmen and Dagon.)

Personality: Since her given name is well nigh unpronounceable except underwater, Ys'lei-nsthath goes by Ys. She is rather proud of her nickname since it is synonymous with a sunken city that her people regard with a certain amount of pride. She has a bit of a speech impediment when speaking landwalker words, so she often ends up hissing her S's and C's.

Ys is in many ways a typical teenager... in the body of an anthropomorphic fish monster. She has a generally sunny personality and tends to look for the good in things, trusting that everything will work out in the end if she keeps trying hard enough. Even so, her confidence is not bulletproof and she can be easily crushed by a pointed comment or a dirty look. She will always bounce back eventually, but those who know her well find that it's always best to make amends with her sooner rather than later, and are rewarded by seeing her instantly return to her normal state of happiness. She is quick to forgive and forget and typically prefers to keep the status quo rather than make enemies.

Like any gawky youngster, she is a bit self-conscious about certain aspects of her looks. She is proud of her wonderfully sharkish teeth, but can never get her hair to stay just-so and she has secret dreams of being delicate and poisonous like a lionfish one day, though that is about as likely as her sprouting wings. In seeming contradiction to her worries about the small things, she is perfectly immodest about her clothing except for her SCABA (self-contained abovewater breathing apparatus) tank. On land, she often finds herself wishing that she could move about without the restrictions of her breating apparatus, but it's necessary for her to live. Should it ever break or malfunction, she would need to immediately return to water or risk suffocation. She can see pretty well out of it, but sometimes she wonders if she would be regarded differently without it. (She also has a great deal of sympathy for goldfish in bowls.)

When it comes to food, Ys is as adventurous as she is in her other pursuits. Having already experienced all sorts of odd underwater delicacies, she is eager to have her fill of landwalker foods. At home, the fare was often wriggling and raw things, the fresher the better and it was best if it was something you caught yourself. She has taken a shine to some of the Halloween sweets and wouldn't mind trying some of the weirder possibilties.

Her curiosity carries over into pretty much everything she does. She is the sort to get into trouble because she just wanted to know how it worked, or where it led, or why it was making that noise, or why they weren't supposed to open that or go in there... etc. She often knows that she is getting into something that she shouldn't, but she has a mischievous streak that she can't ignore. Although it's hard to sneak around in a sloshing fishbowl, you had best be prepared for pranking if you're ever in the water with her.

Ys is not terribly fond of ghosts or overly human entities. Although she hasn't encountered an actual human yet, there is an instinctive aversion to their type innate in her species. As for the ghosts, they are just so... strange. While she doesn't hate them, she finds them unnerving and weird. She would be willing to give anyone a chance, but it would take some courage on her part and patience on theirs to get around these feelings. When it comes to actual, outright dislikes, she is definitely not a fan of verbal confrontation. Physical confrontations are fine, she'll grapple with the best of them, but when it comes to people fighting out loud, her words get garbled and her shouts echo and bubble and it's a mess. She tend to get really stressed out when other people around her are fighting, so she is likely to either explode at them to knock it off and make up or avoid them altogether until they're done.

Romantic relationships are a bit of a mystery to Ys. She has never been in love and didn't take much interest in males back home. Of course, now that she is a bit older, who knows what will happen? She may end up being as awkward as a fish out of water, but that's what being in love at 16 is all about.


Why did they enroll at the academy? Ys is pretty young by Deep One standards, so she has yet to have any experience with the human world. Her parents felt that she ought to have a little more introduction to being a proper monster before they set her loose at sea. With her curious nature and inclination to be more mischievous than murderous, she just isn't ready for a life of drowning sailors and gnawing on their bones or the other properly monstrous things that her kind enjoys doing. She also has not come into her full powers and requires further instruction and study in order to achive her true potential. Ys knows this and doesn't feel badly about it, but is instead eager to be learning and doing new things. She is very interested in the air-world and has high hopes for all the wonders that it holds. She also has trouble reading books before they disintegrate at home, so seeing those in their proper habitat will be a pleasure too.

Being a monster, Ys is a naturally physical sort of creature, so she is interested in trying out sporty things that the landwalkers enjoy doing. She would also be all over a swim club since that's well suited to her talents. She also wants to try out other things that she may not be as well suited for, such as the gardening club, for better or ill. With her, it's all about the experience. When it comes to classes, she is eager to learn everything she can about the human world and how delicious they are Halloween's interactions with it. She will definitely try to get into a music class, even if her SCABA means that her choices will be a little less varied. Minipet Training also appeals to her, since she always had a soft spot for little critters back home and would love to have a better understanding of their antics.

Abilities

FEAR: Thalassophobia - In its ideal state, this ability causes the victim to have hallucinations of their worst sea-related fears. They can hear the water, they can feel the cool deep closing in around them. They have a sensation that sharks are swimming near or that eels are coiling about their bodies. They can feel the water dragging them down, down, down into the dark abyss. It is highly dependent on the victim's proximity to Ys, as the closer they are to her, the more intense the imaginings. Since she is only a beginning student and her powers are weak, someone being subjected to her FEAR would probably experience seasickness (worse if they normally get seasick easily) and feel like they were wading around in the tide a little too long, maybe encountering an unhappy crab. When she does very poorly in her attack, they feel like they've been splashed with water and may have cause to wonder if it is raining. Should this attack actually be used in water, it may be more effective at a more advanced level.

Natural Ability: Lateral Line - Like fish and many amphibians, Deep Ones possess a special set of neural receptors that allow them to keep track of other creatures in their vicinity due to the natural weak magnetic and electrical fields they emit. This ability is far stronger in water than on land. The result is that Ys sometimes appears very graceful because she is able to move along with others the way fish in a school synchronize themselves with calculated ease due to naturally sensing the movements of others. This ability is not perfect, but may seem uncanny.
