Ooh she couldn't stand it, she just couldn't stand it. Ages, ages past, and her boss had shown absolutely no inclination at all to...(she altered it just a bit to take off the sting) any does at all. Incredible! Unbelievable! So upsetting! He was so handsome and so capable and such a wonderful fellow and yet this terribly frustrating behaviour. Today was the day. Today she would ask. " Boss?" Fade piped up.

Rise put the salty, shrivelled rodent down. " Yes?"

She paused, pouted and reconsidered, then said tartly, "are you gay?"

He laughed, fairly uproariously, and calmed down to stack the preserved product. "No, I'm not."

This proclamation was greeted by a thump and clatter over by the sunning rocks. "YOU'RE NOT?!!?! Uh, I mean...you're not?" Fell amended, faltering, surrounded by a tumble of half-dried fruits.

"You're not?!" She squealed, with a hint of excitement.

"No, I'm not." He said, bemusedly pushing the stack to the side. "Did everybody think I was?"

Weep, for whom the events playing out right now read like a wholly predictable scene from a bad sitcomedy, paused mid salamander-dunk to deliver her verdict.
"No."

He had collapsed into himself by now, crouching miserably in his corner, but raised his head just enough to weakly chime,
"No..."

"Oh my good Swampmother yes," Fade said, kicking up her heels. "But you've never ever shown any interest in m - us!" She frantically gestured to both Weep and herself. "Or - or any does at all!"

"No," He shook his head slowly. "No I'm not interested in most does," he added, then hastily noted "But don't take offense, mind, you and Weep are like the most adorable younger sisters to me!"

The colour - rather impressively - drained from Fade's face. "Well you know," she said listlessly, oh Swampmother little sister?! "if you're gay you don't have to worry about discrimination an' all that. That's what we're here for," she bleated, slowly sinking to her 'meti-knees, "justice and equality an' all that..."

"Fade," he crouched, taking pity on her, "Fade...look, it's really not that you -" he nodded towards Weep, "and Weep, aren't lovely girls, it's just that I really have no interest in most does." He straightened up, hesitated, and looked away, eyes distant. A slow intake of breath and he gradually started.
"There's a doe I always think of," he said, "when I have the time to, and she's a doe I saw when I was a colt, in the middle of the night. I remember everything about her it's crazy; silvery hair, dark eyes and a light icy coat - she glowed in the moonlight. She spoke to me and then she was gone."
He lowered his head and chuckled. "I don't know if she really existed in the first place. I think I might have imagined her, really, but all of this - " he flicked his tail, casting a sweeping look over the piles of dried, salty, tasty carcasses and strung-up skins, "all of this was because of what she said. So - she's my dream - dreamed doe," Rise smiled. "And I don't think about other does much at all."

Rise could only be so much of a gentleman, and likely completely failed to notice the other stricken kimeti a distance behind him. But Fell was starting to rouse from his stupor, as his boss' most recent words replayed ominously in his mind...middle of the night...silvery hair...light icy coat...
"Was...was she very rude?" he said, faintly, pulling himself up onto his hooves.
