When the light hit her, all at once, Kipp thought she had died. If she had died, which of the afterlives was this? She was obviously sentient, so it had to be one of them. Was her consciousness doomed to wander in the grey veil between life and death, or had she been sent to a more final place?
Staggering to her feet, Kipp noticed the rows of pods, her eyes adjusting to the new light. She remembered bits: trials, death, a fight-- she remembered, distantly, the love of her family. The support of her cousin. The terrible fear of choosing to keep fighting. Kipp raised her chin up, as if in defiance of the fear, and kept one hand on her recent pod to brace herself.
Walking was difficult, and Kipp used each pod in turn to hold herself upright, taking quick, short steps with shaking legs like a newborn foal.
Eventually, the rows of pods led her to the sign: All new personnel should proceed to the Cove to retrieve their weapons. Kipp was not one to let the fear and loneliness defeat her, and so she left the room with the pods with purpose. As much purpose as she could have while her small hand pressed against each wall.
