Celerity was leaping from root to root, hooves striking wood with more force than strictly necessary. Serenity was such a drag. Always hinting about how nice it would be to stay somewhere for a while, settle down. As if she didn't even know how much her sister loved to travel, as if she thought staying in one place wouldn't just make her restless. Well! Serenity could see how much she liked staying in one spot alone for a while. Celerity was bent on enjoying herself for a while.

Resting in the cool dark water beneath a tangled mangrove, Rockface was enjoying a hard-won meal. Generally sticking to easier-to-acquire fare, today he had decided on a whim to eat a few fish. It hadn't taken him long to remember why he didn't eat fish often, but the first bite also reminded him why he kept on doing it.
He was partway though the second of three fish he caught that day when he heard a strange sound approaching through the usual white noise of the swamp.Clonk-click whump patta-clonk.Half-masked by the sound of his own chewing, he almost thought the sound wasn't real.Clatta-whump clack thump. He blinked and shook his head. Cocking an ear, he listened more carefully. Definitely real, and getting closer...?Takka-pat whop tumpa-tock.Belatedly, he realized the sounds were headed in his direction. However, as soon as the thought crossed his mind, they were overhead, resonating deafeningly between the tree and the water. He cried out, startled, and quickly ducked out from under the roots, fur that wasn't sodden down raised in agitation. He must've been quite a sight, fish scales still on his face and all.

Celerity had not been paying enough attention to her surroundings. The sudden yelp and flash of dark blue made her shriek, and she stumbled on her jump, toppling into the water instead. It weighed down her heavy curls, and when she scrambled upright, she had to shake her head to get them out of her eyes, bracing for a fight against some monster that lurked in the dark places of the Sw--
Oh. It was a buck. "Well. Hello there," she said after a moment, trying to gather the bits of her dignity back together.

"H-hello, ma'am," Rockface stammered out over the hammering of his heart. He attempted a chuckle, but it came out more like a wheezy cough. "Gosh, you gave me a fright there. But, oh, I see I've frightened you, too," he added, wilting considerably. "Sorry about that. Are you alright?" He looked the sodden doe over from where he stood stiffly, checking for obvious injuries.
Maybe admiring her lustrous scales, too. And her long, curly hair. And her bright, pale eyes.
Alright, definitely checking her out a little, but c'mon, cut a buck some slack. And, he was genuinely concerned about her well-being, there was that!

Celerity shook herself all over, with a sharp shake of her head to get the water out -- though she was careful not to splash him. Once she felt a little drier, she peered curiously at him, noting the plates on his head and his particular, striking shade of dark blue.
"Oh, no. Not ma'am. Just call me Celerity." She didn't seem to be particularly annoyed, at least, though for the moment she was oblivious to him looking her over, too. She climbed back onto a root, out of the water, to dry off a little more. "I'm fine! It'd take a worse tumble than that to hurt me. Are you alright? I'm afraid I wasn't watching where I was going."

Rockface's coat settled back down. When she began studying him in turn, Rockface unconsciously avoided eye contact. "Doing fine, myself. Nothing but a bit of a startle, really. Not so much as a scrape," he rattled off.
His face changed expression suddenly as an idea took him, and he ducked back under the tree, rooting about noisily. The reason for this became obvious as he came back out holding a medium-sized fish by the tail, which he then proffered to the still-damp doe with a muffled, "W'chuh lhk uh ffch?"

Celerity blinked slowly at him, looking steadily more amused as he rambled a little, then suddenly vanished back under the roots. She half thought he'd decided to leave, when he reappeared so suddenly that she jumped a little in surprise. His offer, muffled as it was, was clearly understood -- she laughed and bobbed her head.
"Why, yes, I would. Thank you." She took it delicately, and set it down, pinning it with a hoof, to remove flesh without also taking bones. "Did I interrupt you while you were fishing?"

"No, ha ha, the fishing is done for now," he said. "Messy business that it is. I was eating, actually. Quite sated myself, had two already, so don't worry, ha."
By then he realized that he was prattling, panicked. Just because of a - an admittedly gorgeous - doe? What was he, some untried colt? He looked down into the water, forcing himself to breathe evenly. In the water, however, he saw his reflection - still covered in fishy bits! Oh, dear. That wouldn't do. As quickly and quietly as he could, he dipped his face in the water and shook the remainder of his dinner off, rather violently at that. And, even though he tried, he couldn't stop himself from making a sad, silly whubububub noise.
Damn it.

Celerity had been rather occupied with the fish -- at the noise, she peered up at him, and actually laughed. He seemed shy; she wanted to at least try to put him at ease. "Oh, my. You know, I used to do that all the time? And then all this hair grew out and now all I can manage is a little swoosh."
For all her curling hair and icy scales, Celerity was decidedly less elegant and more impulsive than she looked.

He laughed, a short, bitter bark. "I know what it's like, to be hindered by what makes me different," he said, looking again to the stilling waters at the reflection of his face. "My namesake's every bit as heavy as it looks." He stared in silence for a moment before he realized that he hadn't actually given the doe his name. He looked up again quickly to amend this - "My name's Rockface, by the way."
