New York City
First Appearance:

Professor X is one of the most powerful mutants on the face of the earth. He can read minds, project an astral form of himself, communicate telepathically with others, can control and influence other's minds, and can also sense other mutants. Professor X is considered to be the most powerful telepath in the world. Although Professor X could undoubtedly use his powers for evil, he has chosen to use them for the betterment of mankind, both mutant and human.
Charles Xavier also has a superior intellect. He is a world renown scientist, with extensive knowledge in genetics, psionics, and mutations. One of his creations is the device known as, "Cerebro." Xavier uses his own telepathic abilities to boost the power of the Cerebro machine and can pinpoint mutants around the world.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Currently Seen In:
Various X-Men Titles
Interesting Fact::

Xavier's greatest enemy is also his greatest friend, Magneto.
Origin:

Charles Xavier knew he was different. His powers emerged early in his life as a boy, even to the effect of feeling his half brother's pain from beatings from his father. He learned to control his powers later in life. Xavier discovered his calling in life while traveling the world. He encountered a telepath by the name of Amahl Farouk - The Shadow King. Charles Xavier defeated him and decided to protect the world from evil mutants. His path of action would be cut short very soon however.
In Tibet, Xavier discovered a group of people enslaved by the mysterious Lucifer, who turned out to be an alien working to help plan an invasion of earth. Charles helped to lead the people to revolt against Lucifer, but in the battle, was crippled when a large stone was thrown upon him by Lucifer.
Now, as a paraplegic, Charles knew he couldn't fight evil mutants head on, so he decided to start a school where he could train and direct young mutants to help protect humanity from those evil mutants that would try to oppress humanity and therefore set back his cause for equality with humans and mutants. Those that have graduated from his school and show true talent become a part of an elite strike-force known as The X-Men.

Real Name:
Scott Summers

Location:
New York City

First Appearance:
The Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Created By:
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

Powers:
Cyclops powers emanate from his eyes. Although many may thing they are laser blasts, they are actually blasts of pure force, capable of killing a human being and even blasting through walls, steel, and more.

Scott’s energy comes from the sun. He is constantly soaking in solar energy and converting it into the energy that comes out of his eyes.
Scott uses a pair of ruby quartz sunglasses to prevent the force blasts from randomly shooting out as he lost the ability to control his optic blasts in a plane crash long ago. In combat, Cyclops uses a visor to control his blasts. He must push a button on the left or right sides to rotate the ruby quartz plates and allow the energy to come out.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men

Currently Seen In:
Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Interesting Fact:

Scott’s father did not die in the plane crash in his youth. Instead, Scott’s father Major Christopher Summers was captured by Shi’ar aliens and later became Corsair of the Starjammers.
Origin:

As a boy, Scott Summers lost his parents in a tragic plane crash. His mother pushed Scott and his brother Alex (Havok) out of the plane with the only parachute. Unfortunately, the parachute caught on fire and Scott hit his head, putting him into a coma and caused brain damage. Alex was adopted and Scott spent months in a coma, only to be sent to an orphanage when he awoke.
Later, Scott’s mutant powers awoke to devastating effect. It would seem that the brain damage he suffered from the plane crash affected his ability to control his mutant powers. Scott unleashed a torrent of energy and blasted a crane apart and onto a crowd. A subsequent blast from Scott saved the crowd, but instead of praise, Scott suffered their anger and fear as they tried to pursue him. Scott fled and was eventually approached by Charles Xavier.
Charles asked Scott to become the first in his new school for gifted youngsters. Scott accepted and as Xavier has said, “You will be the nucleus—around which I shall build the group!” Since that time, Scott has proven himself to be that nucleus and leader for the X-Men.

Real Name:
Robert “Bobby” Drake
Location:
New York City
First Appearance:
The Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Created By:
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Powers:

As Iceman, Bobby Drake has gone through a slow evolution with his powers. Often, when he was first with the X-Men, Bobby spent more of his time honing his comedic skills rather than his mutant abilities. At first, Bobby could only cover his body in snow. Early on in the X-Men comic book, he learned how to encase his body in a hard ice shell. Now, Bobby Drake can turn his entire body into living ice.
In this form, he is nearly indestructible. If he were to shatter or break apart, he can quickly reform himself with the help of a water source, or even using the moisture in the air. It has only been in recent years that he has been able to do this.
Iceman can also lower the temperature around him to extreme degrees, can fire ice missiles, and can use water and moisture to form just many different objects such as shields, walls, and an ice slide he uses for transportation. He can also create detailed items like ice sculptures, and other snow items like snowballs. Lately, he has learned how to add mass to his body to increase his size and strength.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, X-Factor(1st Series)
Currently Seen In:
Various X-Men Titles
Interesting Fact:

Many consider Iceman to be one of the most powerful mutants in the world. The problem is that due to Bobby’s poor self image, he holds himself back from his true potential.
Origin:

Robert “Bobby” Drake was raised by his parents to be a fun-loving and caring son. They lived a quiet life in Long Island, but that soon changed. His mutant powers developed early, and Bobby’s parents had him keep his powers secret to avoid retaliation from the many people who fear and hate mutants.

He was unable to do so when he was forced to use his powers and show himself as a mutant. A mob formed and Bobby was rescued by Cyclops and Professor X. Bobby joined the X-Men and became the youngest member of the original team.

Bobby has always been known as a jokester and is a very loved and enjoyed member of the team. His joking, however, has often been a mask for his poor self image. He even left the X-Men for a short time to pursue a normal life as an accountant, but that was not to be.

Lately, Bobby has truly come into his own, expanding his powers and growing as a member of the X-Men. After the recent House of M events, it appeared that Bobby’s days as Iceman were over, as his powers seemed to have disappeared. It came out though, that Bobby had deactivated them subconsciously. Another indicator of what Bobby truly feels about himself. However, he remains a vital part of The X-Men and continues to fight for Xavier’s dream of peace between mutant and human.

Real Name:
Jean Grey
Location:
New York City
First Appearance:
The Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Created By:
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Powers:

Jean Grey is a powerful picnic with the powers of telepathy and telekinesis. In her earlier years, she could only lift as much with her mind as she could lift physically, but she would blossom to become a key member of the X-Men with the development of her powers. She could lift great amounts of weight, project telekinetic Shields to protect her and her friends, and also influence other's minds.
Later, with the arrival of the Phoenix, Jean's powers would increase dramatically. At first, the Phoenix took the form of Jean Grey and absorbed part of her personality, while the real Jean Grey was in suspended animation. After the Phoenix was destroyed, it appeared to, "rebirth," itself into Jean Grey.
As the Phoenix, Jean's powers are greatly amplified. She can fly, even in space, and even sense and change things at a molecular level. Even though it appears that Jean has died many times, she always seems to rise again as the Phoenix. The unfortunate side effect is that the Phoenix is very unstable and only until recently has Jean been able to fully control the Phoenix.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Currently Seen In:
Various X-Men Titles
Interesting Fact:

Jean Grey was the first student of Professor Charles Xavier.
Origin:

Jean Grey first discovered her abilities when she saw a childhood friend die in a car crash. Jean linked telepathically with her friend as she died and the shock sent her into a coma. For years, her family tried to find a way to help her and it was only until Professor Charles Xavier blocked her mutant powers was she able to awaken.
It seemed her body and mind was unable to compensate with her newborn telepathic powers. Xavier helped to allow Jean to develop at a natural rate and met with her to help her develop and control her powers. She later joined Xavier's Institute and became the first female member of The X-Men.
Her fate was ultimately changed forever by the Phoenix force, made up of the sum of all life force in the universe. The Phoenix has merged with Jean Grey, giving her extraordinary abilities, far beyond that of any human or mutant. Even though the Phoenix has been destroyed, like the fable of history, it rises again and again. The two seem to be linked on a level far above host and parasite. As Jean has said herself, "I'm always Jean and I'm always Phoenix."

Real Name:
Hank McCoy
Location:
New York City
First Appearance:
Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Created By:
Len Wein and Dave Cockrum
Powers:

The Beast, like his namesake, has many animalistic qualities. He has superhuman strength and agility and can perform amazing acrobatic feats. His feet are as agile as his hands and can be used to perform any action his hands are able to. He is also able to rapidly heal himself from injuries.
The Beast is also extremely intelligent, and is considered to have an intellect that rivals many of the elite thinkers in the Marvel universe. He has a doctorate from the Xavier Institute and is well versed in the areas of genetics and biochemistry.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Currently Seen In:
Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Interesting Fact:

The Beast’s blue fur and animalistic features are because Hank McCoy tested an unknown chemical on himself.
Origin:

Hank McCoy grew up with over-sized hands and feet that were early proof that he was a mutant. He made up for these deformities by becoming a star athlete, but as his mutant powers emerged and became known, he was asked to leave his school. Even his parents were cold to him and regarded him with suspicion and fear since his father worked at a local nuclear power plant and it was assumed that Hank’s mutations were because of this.

Professor X approached Hank and asked him to come as a student to the Xavier Institute where he would be free from prejudice, have an advanced education, and could work out in a highly advanced danger room. Hank quickly agreed. He became one of the first to graduate the school.

Later, Hank worked for the Brand Corporation and there discovered a chemical that induced mutations. He found that his invention was going to be stolen and used it on himself to prevent this. The results truly make Hank McCoy a beast, with gray fur that later became blue, fangs, claws, and pointed ears. Despite this setback, Hank kept a happy-go-lucky outlook on life. He even worked with the Avengers, led the super hero team The Defenders, and helped to start X-Factor. Hank eventually returned to The X-Men.

It wasn’t until later that a second mutation brought about a more catlike appearance, and completely shook Hank’s belief in himself. Hank could feel his feral instincts wanting to come forth and he worries that he is becoming more beast than man. Even through all of this Hank McCoy continues to be easygoing and joyful around his teammates, often using his rapier wit to mask his fears.

Hanks is the current scientist in residence at the Xavier Institute. No matter what the future holds for him, Hank knows that he will always have an accepting home with The X-Men as they continue to fight to make the world a safe place for both mutants and humans.

Real Name:
Warren Worthington III
Location:
New York City
First Appearance:
The Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963)
Created By:
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Powers:

When Warren’s mutant powers first emerged, he had feathered wings that came out of his back, allowing him to fly at great speeds and attain great heights. He can also carry other people with him when he flies. His skin is still blue, and his blood seems to have healing properties.
Team Affiliations:
X-Men, Ultimate X-Men
Currently Seen In:
Various X-Men Titles
Interesting Fact:

Although Archangel's blood can be used to heal, it had the exact opposite effect on teammate Nightcrawler. Instead of healing him, it actually hurt him. Some think that since perhaps Nightcrawler's origin is linked to a demon, Archangel is linked to an angelic background.
Origin:

Warren Worthington III was born to an affluent family in New York. During his stay at private school, his wings sprouted. Warren hated them at first, but soon learned he could fly with them. After saving fellow dormmates from a fire, he went to New York City and started a life of crimefighting. This is where Professor X recruited Warren to become part of the X-Men. During this time, he was known as Angel.
During the storyline, “Mutant Massacre,” Warren had his wings severely damaged and later amputated. He regained new metallic wings and blue skin by the help of the mutant Apocalypse. Angel took the name of Death as one of Apocalypse’s four horsemen and fought against the X-Men, but later left Apocalypse to rejoin The X-Men. It was then that he took the name of Archangel.
Warren’s wings eventually reverted back to normal, when the feathers grew inside the metallic ones and eventually burst out, leaving Archangel with his original feathered wings. He continues to fight alongside The X-Men as Archangel.

History

Calvin Rankin was raised by his father Ronald Rankin, who was experimenting with genetics. Once when Calvin was left alone and caused a lab accident which gave him his copying powers. His father, afraid that others would despise him went into hiding with Calvin in a cave, where his father was building a machine that would take away his powers. The villagers found this out and attacked the Rankins' causing a cave-in, killing Ronald.

Years later while in college Calvin met Hank McCoy and Bobby Drake. He realized after using thier powers that they were Iceman and Beast of the X-Men. He then later was in a shop were Jean Grey was. He developed telekinetic powers and realized that she was Marvel Girl. He then proceeded to follow her back to the Mansion, where he introduced himself and asked to join the X-Men. After revealing his plan to them they tussled until Calvin was able to capture Jean and hold her hostage. Calvin then took her to the cave where his father had died and planned on using the machine his father created to make the powers he copies permanent. Not realizing that it would instead take away his powers he used the machine and became powerless. Xavier then removed his memories of the X-men and Calvin returned to college.

Later during a lab accident in college he regained his powers and memory of the X-Men. Seeking revenge he demanded that he become a member of X-Men. Xavier reluctantly accepted and made Calvin the deputy leader. During the next several missions Calvin faced off against Banshee, Ogre and the Factor Three. After that Calvin was offended by Cyclops and attacked him. Xavier finally fed up with Calvin's attitude kicked him off of the team. Calvin left the mansion later to find the Super-Adaptoid attacking the X-Men. Hoping to become even more powerful Calvin offered to join the Adaptoid in his plan to conquer the earth. But upon learning he would become a mindless pawn, he changed his mind and attacked the Adaptoid, losing his powers in the process.

Calvin then returned to school until his powers started to return. This time however his powers where drawing the life force of those around him. Frightened he fled to Canada were his girlfriend, Vera Cantor asked Hank McCoy to help him in finding a cure. Unfortunately the Hulk felt Calvin's power and sought to destroy the source. As the Hulk grew closer Calvin started to absorb the radiation which gave the Hulk his strength. While the Hulk and Beast fought Calvin absorbed too much radiation and died of poisoning. Calvin was then buried in an undisclosed location.

Years later somehow Calvin absorbed the healing factor and powers of Wolverine and was brought back to life, believing himself to be Wolverine. He again encountered the Hulk and later learned that his father was connected to Weapon X. Calvin then regained his memories and the real Wolverine arranged for Calvin to spend some time in Japan to help learn to control his powers.

Years later in Siberia, X-Force found him and tried to calm him down after they crashed into a station nearby. Sometime later Mimic formed an alliance with Onslaught, who upgraded his powers in exchange for his services. He also allied himself with a man known as Sledge who also upgraded his powers.

Sometime later Excalibur was searching for Xavier after the Operation: Zero Tolerance fiasco and instead found Mimic being held hostage by rogue Sentinels. Confused he attacked the members of Excalibur and ultimately lost. They then took him to their headquarters where he recuperated and attended the wedding of Captain Britain and Meggan.

Weeks later he for some unknown reason joined the new Brotherhood Of Mutants and helped the X-Men defeat Cerebro. He then continued to work with the Brotherhood when they tried to capture X-51 a.k.a. Machine Man. They failed and Calvin was captured. Later while being held prisoner Valerie Cooper came and consoled him and offered him a way out of prison, which he took. He was then alongside the Brotherhood affected by a beam sent down by the High Evolutionary in order to de-power all of Earths mutants. The beam caused Calvin to lose his powers momentarily, but he quickly regained them moments after the beam was reversed.

Recently Calvin was seen as a captive of the Thunderbolts after recent developments as a captive alongside hundreds of other criminals in the Folding Castle Detention Quadrant. It is unknown if Calvin has joined the Thunderbolts or if he is still being held by them as a prisoner.

Powers & Abilities

Calvin Rankin has the ability to copy the powers, abilities, attributes, IQ, talents, fighting skills, and characteristics of anyone around him. Along with all those other things he can copy their physical appearance such as their skin color, bone structure, hair style and color, bone composition, voice, eye color, and other physical traits of those he mimics. When Calvin copies the abilities or powers of others he doesn't copy a persons flaws (Ex. When Cyclops was young he received a bump on the head which allowed him to not control his powers. However Calvin can control Cyclops' optic blasts). He has permanently retained the powers of Iceman, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Professor X, Beast, and Angel. The number of powers or people he can mimic are unknown or if he can keep the powers he copies indefinitely. He has been shown to be able to copy the abilities of over 10 people at once.

History

Little is known of the life of mutant shape-changer Kevin Sidney before he became second-in-command of the subversive organization Factor Three and adopted the alias Changeling. After discovering the true plot by Factor Three's leader, the Mutant Master, to wipe out both man- and mutantkind, Changeling freed Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder of the team of mutant heroes the X-Men, and the sonic-screaming mutant known as Banshee who had been captured by the organization. Banshee unmasked the Mutant Master as a member of the alien Siri race, and the X-Men and Factor Three's mutant agents joined forces to defeat him.

Shortly thereafter, Changeling discovered that he had terminal cancer. Seeking to make amends for his past, Changeling approached Xavier, who asked Changeling to impersonate him while he went into seclusion to prepare a means of repelling an approaching invasion by the alien Z'nox.

While using his shape-shifting powers to pose as Xavier, Changeling heroically died while thwarting an attempt by the subterranean menace Grotesk, lone survivor of a subterranean race who sought to destroy the Earth, when an oscillotron machine exploded, mortally wounding him. Changeling was impersonating Xavier at the time, and as such the X-Men believed their mentor dead until the real Professor X eventually returned.

Later, the voodoo practitioner known as the Black Talon resurrected Changeling as a zombie and forced him to serve in a team of other mutant zombies called the X-Humed. Using his powers to impersonate the great musician Elvis Presley, Changeling was able to draw attention to the X-Humed's activities. After the gamma-spawned adventurer She-Hulk defeated the Black Talon, Changeling once again became truly dead.

Changeling then seemingly returned as a malevolent ghost to haunt the British super-team Excalibur, however this was later revealed to be a hoax perpetrated by the sorcerer Merlyn.

Powers & Abilities

Changeling was a mutant metamorph who could alter his physical appearance and voice to mimic that of any other human being. His power could also transform the appearance of his costume as well to reflect the clothing worn by his chosen template. During Changeling’s time with the X-Men, Professor X endowed him with limited telepathic abilities. A side effect of this was the activation of Changeling’s own latent minor telekinetic abilities.

Changeling was a highly trained and efficient organizer of subversive activities, as well as an extraordinary actor.

Polaris

User Image

Mutant Profile

Real name: Lorna Dane (This is her legal name since her adoption. Her given name has not been revealed).
Former aliases: M-2, Magneto the Second, Malice IV
Identity: Secret
Occupation: (current) Adventurer, (former) Graduate student in geophysics at the University of California at Berkeley
Legal status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record
Place of birth: Unrevealed
Marital status: Single
Known relatives: Zaladane (alleged sister, possibly deceased), unnamed uncle and aunt (adoptive parents). Neither the names of Polaris' true parents nor those of her adoptive parents have yet been revealed.
Group affiliation: (current) X-Men, (former) Marauders
Base of operations: (current) Xavier Institute, Salem Center, Westchester County, New York State
First appearance: X-MEN (first series) #49

Physical description and mutant powers

Height: 5 ft. 7 in.
Weight: 115 lbs.
Eyes: Dark Green
Hair: Light Green

Strength: Polaris possesses the normal human strength of a woman of her age, height, and build who engages in moderate regular exercise.

Known superhuman powers: Polaris possesses the ability to manipulate magnetism. Although she has the potential to exercise all of the powers that Magento has, as yet she has only used powers involving the manipulation of magnetic, electrical, and gravitic fields. Moreover, she cannot summon as great an amount of energy as Magneto can. The exact limits on the amount weight that she can magnetically lift at present have not been measured, but they are considerably below those of Magneto. Since she has preferred not to use her powers in combat situations, she has not worked nearly as hard to develop them as Magneto has. As with Magneto, it is unknown whether Polaris's powers are purely psionic or whether they derive from her physically.

Polaris has been observed levitating metallic objects and creating force fields in which she can suspend persons or objects in the air and in which she can protect them from attacks from outside the fields. She can also overload or short-circuit electrical systems. By concentrating, Polaris can perceive the world around herself solely as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. She can perceive the natural magnetic auras surrounding living beings, as well.

History

Lorna Dane's parents are said to have died in a plane crash only weeks after her birth. She was then adopted by the Danes, who are said to be her mother's sister and brother-in-law. The Danes never told Lorna that they were not her true parents for fear that the truth might have a traumatic effect on her. Lorna did not learn the story about the plane crash and the fact that she had been adopted until she was nearly twenty years old.

Lorna Dane had been born with green hair, which at first her foster parents and then she herself always kept dyed brown so that she would not be thought of as being "different." Dane's hair color was the only outward sign of her unusual genetic structure. She had the latent genetic potential for magnetic powers, but certain genetic factors were absent which would have allowed her to exercise those powers. In the normal course of events, Dane would never have been able to use these powers. However, the intervention of Samuel "Starr" Saxon, the master roboticist whose brain patterns were later preserved in the Machinesmith, altered the normal course of events. Saxon had constructed an android duplicate of Magneto, the mutant with great magnetic powers who was then believed to be dead, and a small army of androids with strange powers called the Demi-Men. Saxon's plans were to use these androids as his means of accumulating vast wealth and power, while deceiving the world into believing them to be examples of evil mutants, who had become objects of widespread fear.

Saxon decided that he needed some actual mutants to help lead the android army while he himself remained behind the scenes, giving directions through the Magneto robot. First, Saxon had the robot Magneto recruit Mesmero to serve as second in command. Then, Saxon decided that a mutant who was a natural source of vast magnetic power would be useful in dealing with his metal robot army. From sources still unrevealed, Saxon acquired a "psyche-generator," which has some features in common with Charles Xavier's Cerebro machine. Mesmero used the psyche-generator to summon mutants in North America with latent powers. The nearest such mutant with latent magnetic powers, Lorna Dane, found herself compelled to travel to San Francisco, the city where Mesmero was. Mesmero and his androids captured her and brought her to their desert headquarters, where they placed her inside a "genetic stimulator," which altered her genetic structure so as to allow her to exercise her previously latent powers. Meanwhile Mesmero used his hypnotic powers upon her to alter her personality so that she would sympathize with the bogus Magneto and his cause. She was told that she was the daughter of Magneto and that she had inherited her powers from him.

Shortly afterwards, however, Mesmero dropped his control over Dane, overconfidently assuming that she would obey her supposed father no matter what happened. On the contrary, after the X-Man named Iceman revealed to her that Magneto was not her father, and told her about the plane crash and her adoption, Lorna Dane joined the X-Men in battling "Magneto". Mesmero and the Magneto robot escaped, the Demi-Men were destroyed, and Saxon, his plans ruined, had to fall back on hiring himself out as an assassin who used androids to kill.

For a time Dane was romantically inclined toward Robert Drake, the Iceman, but eventually she fell in love with Alexander Summers, who is also known as Havok. Neither Dane nor Summers wished to lead lives as adventurers, but they discovered that they had a mutual interest in geophysics. Hence, they both began doing doctoral research in that subject in the Diablo mountain range in California. Since they spent most of their time away from public view, Dane did not bother to dye her hair. Neither Dane (who eventually took the code-name Polaris) nor Summers have ever been full-time X-Men, but they were always willing to help the X-Men in emergency situations, and have done so in the past.

Lorna received her current costume, which is of Shi'ar design, when her mind came under the domination of the Shi'ar Intelligence agent Davan Shakari, who served D'ken, the now deposed emperor of the Shi'ar Galaxy. Charles Xavier finally freed her from Shakari's control.

For a time Polaris was mentally possessed by Malice, one of the members of the team of assassins called the Marauders. Later, after she regained her free will, Polaris encountered her alleged sister Zaladane, a sorceress based in the prehistoric Savage Land. Zaladane temporarily stole Polaris's magnetic powers. Strangely, as a result, Polaris developed alternate powers, including superhuman strength and durability, and also grew considerably in height and mass.

Eventually Polaris regained her normal size and powers. She resumed her romantic relationship with Havok, and they both joined the United States government's new version of X-Factor. She has remained a member of X-Factor for years.

History

Alexander Summers is the younger of the two sons of Christopher Summers, a United States Air Force Major and test pilot, and his wife Katherine Anne. The family were flying back from a vacation in their vintage airplane when they crashed into a scout ship of the intergalactic Shi'ar Empire, setting the wooden plane ablaze. Their mother pushed the brothers out of the burning plane with the only available parachute, allowing them to escape capture by the aliens. The two boys were hospitalized for injuries they sustained during their landing. Alex left the hospital after two weeks and was placed in an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska that was secretly run by the master geneticist Mister Sinister. Alex was soon adopted by the Blanding family, who had lost their son Todd. However, the family were still traumatized by their loss, and treated Alex as if he were Todd. (Unknown to Alex, his brother Scott would become the hero Cyclops and join the X-Men.)

Sinister continued to monitor Alex whilst he lived with his foster family. When he noticed the first stirrings of Alex's mutant powers, Sinister incited the local school bully Vincent, who had caused Todd's accident, to attack Alex. The subsequent stress caused Alex's mutant powers to manifest and he incinerated Vincent. Sinister then placed a genetic lock upon Alex to curtail the development of his powers.

As a result, Alex did not become aware of his mutant abilities until after graduating college. A professor of archaeology named Ahmet Abdol had discovered a psychic link between himself and Alex. While both of them had the latent mutant power to absorb and transform cosmic radiation, Abdol's ability to exercise the power was blocked in an unknown manner by Alex. Abdol captured Alex and took him to his laboratory in Egypt. There, Abdol found a way to screen Alex's body from ambient cosmic radiation, permitting his own body to attain its latent potential. Abdol was transformed into the Living Monolith, a gigantic mutant with vast cosmic power, but was defeated when his brother and the X-Men came to the rescue. Incapable of controlling the power his body emanated, Alex fled into the Egyptian desert.

Alex was soon captured by one of the mutant-hunting robotic Sentinels and brought to the headquarters of Larry Trask, son of the Sentinels' inventor Bolivar Trask. Larry gave Alex the codename Havok and a costume whose chest display monitored the build-up of cosmic energy within him. The X-Men came to Alex's rescue; however, he was injured in the ensuing battle with the Sentinels and was taken to Doctor Karl Lykos for treatment. Lykos was himself a mutant who fed off the life energies of other mutants, and when he siphoned energy from Alex he transformed for the first time into the flying reptilian creature named Sauron.

After Sauron was defeated, Alex returned to New York with his brother and his teammates where he joined the X-Men and began training to control his powers. Eventually, Alex gained enough mastery over his power that he would release it only when he wished to do so and could wield his power with enough skill to become a formidable opponent in battle.

During his time with the X-Men, Alex fell in love with his teammate Lorna Dane, the magnetism-manipulating mutant now known as Polaris. They both served for a time in the X-Men helping to repel the invasion by the alien Z'nox; however, neither Alex nor Lorna wished to lead a life as an adventurer. They discovered a mutual interest in geophysics and left the X-Men to begin doctoral research in the Diablo mountain range in Arizona.

Their idyllic lifestyle was eventually interrupted when the pair found themselves hunted by the team of superhuman assassins known as the Marauders. Lorna was possessed by the psionic entity known as Malice, who forced her to attack the X-Men as the Marauders leader. Alex, who had rejoined the X-Men, had no choice but to fight his lover.

Later, Alex traveled through the Siege Perilous, a mystic gateway that granted those who passed through it a new lease on life, free of their past baggage. When he reappeared, it was as a member of the Magistrates of the mutant-enslaving island nation of Genosha. After the X-Men overthrew the Genoshan government, Alex remained behind for a time to ensure the new government wouldn't repeat the mistakes of the former administration. He later accepted an offer to lead the second version of X-Factor, a government-funded mutant agency, of which Lorna was a member.

Alex continued to serve with X-Factor until the apparent death of his teammate Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man, at the hands of the prophetic mutant named Haven. Disillusioned, Alex teamed up with the Dark Beast, an evil doppelganger of the X-Men's Beast from another timeline, and together they founded a team of mutant terrorists called the Brotherhood of Mutants. However, Alex had not truly become a villain and had only joined the Brotherhood in order to stop the Dark Beast's sinister plans. After he was aided by the time-traveling Xavier Underground Enforcers in stopping the Dark Beast, Alex joined them in their quest to stop their apocalyptic future from occurring. Alex was seemingly killed when a time machine created by X.U.E. member Greystone exploded, but he was actually shunted into an alternate universe, trading bodies with the Havok of that reality. However, Alex's family and friends all believed him dead.

After adventuring with a team of twisted versions of the heroes he once knew, Alex again seemingly died, but was left floating in a Limbo-like void. On Alex's Earth, a catatonic "John Doe" patient at the Rosy Manor Convalescent Hospital in upstate New York was identified as being Alex Summers by his attending nurse, Annie Ghazikanian. After she contacted the X-Men, Cyclops came to collect his brother, and Annie sought to accompany Alex as she had come to care for him and sought to continue his rehabilitation.

Alex was eventually saved by Annie's young son Carter, who used his fledgling mutant powers to reconnect Alex's consciousness to his body. Seizing the day, Alex's long-time love Lorna asked him to marry her. Somewhat shocked at such a life-altering question so soon after his return, Alex faltered over a reply but his assembled friends and family made the decision for him. However, Alex had fallen in love with Annie, and called off his wedding as Lorna was walking up the aisle. Lorna snapped and attempted to kill both Alex and his newfound love, but she was stopped by Alex's teammate the Juggernaut.

Soon after, the alternate reality Havok's personality resurfaced within Alex, having followed Alex's consciousness back from within the void in which he had been trapped. The team of dimension-hopping mutants known as the Exiles were charged with the task of stopping the evil Havok, and they teamed up with the X-Men to prevent him from killing Carter. The evil consciousness was eventually forced out of Alex's body and sent back into the void where it was destroyed by the Exiles' taskmaster, the enigmatic being known as the Timebroker.

Recently, following the Scarlet Witch's alteration of reality, many mutants were left powerless, including Polaris. She chose to leave the X-Men, and Havok decided to accompany her. During an encounter with the creature called Daap, Polaris was abducted and Havok returned to the X-Men.

Powers & Abilities

Havok is a mutant with the superhuman ability to absorb ambient cosmic energy into the cells of his body, convert it in an unknown manner, and release it as concentric waves of energy that heat the air in their path enough to turn it into plasma. (Plasma is a super-heated state of matter consisting of charged subatomic particles.) These waves will emanate from his body in all directions unless he purposefully tries to channel them in a single directions, usually along the length of his arms. Havok is himself immune to the intense heat he creates.

History

Somewhere in the depths of space, a United States space shuttle collided with a mysterious rock and the reminant energy created by the Scarlet Witch's recent alteration of reality. When the shuttle crashed to earth, a powerful mutant emerged and was subsequently detected by Emma Frost and Cerebro, in the process overloading Emma with psychic feedback. A team of X-Men were dispatched to the crash site, and the mutant attacked them upon arrival. After incapacitating Wolverine, the mutant absconded with Cyclops and Marvel Girl (Rachel Summers) to an old research facility used by Moira MacTaggart. The mutant seemed to have some knowledge of past X-Men and their history,in that he was able to recognize Cyclops but did not know later members such as Wolverine and mistook Marvel Girl for her mother, Jean Grey.

Using Sway's powers in combination with Marvel Girl's, the mutant began taunting the captured X-Men with images of the past. Meanwhile, Banshee uncovered the location of a secret tape with information about the new mutant but was killed by the Blackbird while delivering the tape to the X-Men. The Beast was, however, able to retrieve the tape, and the X-Men which contained revelations that the mutant, under the codename "Kid Vulcan" was part of a forgotten team of MacTaggart's students conscripted to help rescue a group of X-Men trapped by Krakoa, some years ago. The mutant, now using the code name "Vulcan," also revealed to Cyclops that he is his youngest brother.

History

Kurt Wagner was born with certain unusual physical characteristics, but his power of self-teleportation did not emerge until puberty. Margali Szardos, a sorceress and gypsy queen, found Wagner an hour after his birth, in a small roadside shelter in the Bavarian Alps. She found his father, Eric Wagner, dead of a heart attack on the road outside. Margali is said to have found Wagner's mother lying next to the baby and dying, but this assertion has been called into question, and not even Kurt Wagner knows the truth. Margali took the baby to the small Bavarian circus where she worked as a fortuneteller as a 'cover' for her activities as a sorceress. Wagner was never legally adopted by anyone, but was raised by all the members of the circus, who had no prejudices against 'freaks.' Margali acted as Wagner's unofficial foster mother.

Wagner grew up happily in the circus, and his two closest friends were Margali's natural children Stefan and Jimaine. Long before his teleportation power emerged, Wagner had tremendous natural agility, and by his adolescence he had become the circus's star acrobat and aerial artist. Circus audiences assumed that he was a normal-looking human being wearing a demon-like costume.

Years later, the Texas millionaire Arnos Jardine, who ran a large circus based in Florida, heard of the circus Wagner worked for and bought it. Jardine intended to move its best acts into his American circus. However, he demanded that Wagner be placed in the circus's freak show. Appalled, Wagner quit and made his way towards Winzeldorf, Germany, where Stefan was. He discovered that Stefan had gone mad and had brutally slain several children. Two nights after leaving the circus, Wagner found Stefan and fought him, hoping to stop his rampage. In the course of the struggle, Wagner unintentionally broke Stefan's neck. Then the villagers of Winzeldorf, who assumed him to be a demon who was responsible for the child killings, discovered Wagner. They were about to kill him when they were all psionically paralyzed by Professor Charles Xavier, who had come to recruit Wagner into the X-Men. Wagner agreed to join the group, but before they left for America, he and Xavier went to the Bavarian circus so that Wagner could explain to Margali about Stefan's death. However, Margali was not there. She held Wagner responsible for murdering Stefan, but years later, she learned the truth and she and Wagner were reconciled. Wagner was also happily reunited with Jimaine, who now lives in the United States under the name of Amanda Sefton. Known as Nightcrawler, Wagner became a member of the X-Men.
Powers & Abilities

Nightcrawler is a mutant with the ability of Teleportation He teleports by displacing himself into another dimension (the nature of which is as yet unknown), travelling through it, and then returning to his own dimension at a certain distance from his point of departure. He consciously determines his point of return. The entire process occurs so quickly that Nightcrawler is unaware of being in another dimension at all. Nightcrawler guides himself through the other dimension by an unconscious, natural direction-finding sense. Although Nightcrawler controls his teleportational ability with his conscious mind, his power to teleport is not psionic. Rather it is the result of an unknown biochemical/biophysical reaction which he triggers mentally.

History

Born the second son of wealthy landowners John and Elizabeth Howlett in Alberta, Canada during the late 19th Century, James Howlett was a frail boy of poor health. James was largely neglected by his mother, who was institutionalized for a time following the death of her first son, John Jr., in 1897. He spent most of his early years on the estate grounds and had two playmates that lived on the Howlett estate with him: Rose, a red-headed girl who was brought in from town to be a companion to young James, and a boy nicknamed "Dog" who was the son of the groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. Thomas Logan was an alcoholic and was extremely abusive to his son. The children were close friends but as they reached young adulthood, the abuse inflicted upon Dog warped his mind. His actions would lead to a tragic chain of events. that started as the three neared their adolescent years when Dog made unwanted advances toward Rose and James reported it to his father. In retaliation Dog killed James's pet dog. This in turn resulted in the expulsion of Thomas Logan and Dog Logan from the estate.

Thomas Logan, in a drunken stupor, invaded the Howlett estate with his son and attempted to take Elizabeth Howlett (implied to be his former lover) with him. John attempted to stop him and Thomas Logan shot him down in cold blood. James Howlett had just entered the room when this occurred and for the first time his mutation manifested; his claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders with uncharacteristic ferocity, killing Thomas Logan, and scarring Dog's face with three claw marks. Elizabeth Howlett, who was already an emotionally disturbed woman, took her life immediately afterward with a blast from Thomas's gun. Fearing for their safety, Rose fled the estate with James, who appeared to have been deeply traumatized and had somehow repressed or forgotten most of the memories of life back at the estate. Dog falsely reported to the police and James's grandfather that Rose had murdered John Howlett II and Thomas Logan. The eldest Howlett, shunned James and with no family left, took Dog in as his ward. However, Dog was already a burgeoning psychopath and it was too late for his character to evolve down any other path.

In the years that followed, James and Rose took refuge in a British Colombia mining colony under the guise of being cousins. James also assumed the name of "Logan" in order to hide his identity. As the hard work of mining toughened his body, and his mutant powers developed, he grew to be unusually strong and ferocious. He was immune to the elements and even ran with the wolves in the forest, learning to hunt as an animal hunts. "Logan" became a valuable and admirable figure amongst the small community of miners due to his hard work and strong ethics, earning him the respect of his peers, including the foreman Smitty, who became a surrogate father figure to James. During this period, James developed strong feelings for Rose, but could not act on them for the sake of their guise as cousins. Smitty, who had been mentoring James all these years, had also grown close to Rose, and the two eventually fell in love and became engaged, much to the scorn and surprise of James, who later accepted the situation for the sake of Rose's happiness. Meanwhile, the elder John Howlett was in failing health and asked Dog to find Rose and his grandson so he could make peace with them before he died. Dog agreed. However, Dog (who has become a physically formidable man himself) decides to track them down so he can kill James.

Dog hunted James and Rose down so easily that it seemed he had a preternatural skill for tracking. On then night that Smitty was due to leave the mining town with Rose, Dog (who bears an uncanny resemblance to Logan's future nemesis, Sabretooth) finally found and confronted James. Dog reminded James of his past, and that faithful night back on the estate that had changed all their lives so. The two fiercely fought in the middle of the street and despite being the physically stronger of the two Dog was eventually overpowered by the enraged James. As Dog laid unconscious, James unsheathed his claws for the first time in public, to the shock of everyone watching, and was about to deal the deathblow until Rose leapt in to stop him but was accidentally was impaled by his claws. Horrified, "Logan" held her in his arms as she died. He then fled into the woods where he lived in self-imposed exile with a pack of wolves, presumably for many years.

Logan possesses memories of being a Samurai in Japan, a mercenary operative for the Central Intelligence Agency, and a "wild man" in the Canadian wilderness. Due to extensive memory implants given to Logan through the Weapon X program, any or all of these memories are suspect. Logan has at least one memory of meeting Captain America (Steve Rogers) in World War II while he was in the Canadian Army which has been verified as true. Sometime after World War II, Logan was taken by a group of scientists led by Dr. Cornelius as part of the Weapon X program. Cornelius was hired to perfect and use a technique that would bond the indestructible element adamantium to human bone cells. Logan's skeleton was bonded to the adamantium, and he was indoctrinated into the Weapon X assassin program.

Wolverine was conscripted by Department H, and for his first mission was sent against the incredible Hulk. Wolverine was subsequently approached by Professor Charles Xavier, who was looking for mutants to help his students, the X-Men, escape from the island-being known as Krakoa, which had captured them. Wolverine left Alpha Flight to accompany Xavier and rescue the captured X-Men. After Krakoa was defeated, Wolverine decided to stay with the X-Men, for reasons which included that he had fallen for Marvel Girl (Jean Grey). Logan remained with the X-Men for quite some time, at one time being their field commander, and encountered adversaries such as Proteus (Kevin MacTaggart), Magneto (Magnus), the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Brood, the Reavers, demons from the dimension of Limbo, the Marauders, the Morlocks, and even Dracula on one occasion.

After his encounter with the mutant assassin Omega Red, Logan began to question the memories he possessed, but his searches to find his true identity and memories proved fruitless. During an encounter with the mutant Magneto on his space station called Avalon, Wolverine slashed Magneto with his claws. Magneto retaliated, using his powers of the magnetic field to tear the adamantium out of Wolverine's skeleton, causing extensive injuries. These injuries shorted out Wolverine's healing factor for a time, and Logan also discovered that the claws that he believed a result of the Weapon X project were in fact part of his actual bone structure due to his mutation. These bone claws became Wolverine's main weapons until his skeleton later became grafted to adamantium again.

As a result of his injuries, Logan left the X-Men for a time. He visited Muir Island at the request of Kitty Pryde, and was also attacked by Cyber. During the Phalanx invasion, Logan and Cable were asked by Charles Xavier to find and rescue the captured X-Men. They joined with Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Jean Grey returning from their honeymoon (and secretly the future) and freed their teammates in Tibet. Later, Logan was kidnapped by Tyler Dayspring, calling himself Genesis, who wanted to make Wolverine one of his new Horsemen. Genesis had acquired adamantium by destroying the body of the mercenary known as Cyber, and had planned to recreate the bonding process used on Logan years ago. This time, however, Logan's body rejected the adamantium, and he regressed for a time to a feral-like state.

Logan regained his lucidity and rejoined the X-Men. Logan was subsequently kidnapped by the would-be conqueror Apocalypse (En Sabah Nur) and forced to fight the savage assassin Sabretooth for the mantle of the Horseman Death. Knowing that he might be able to resist Apocalypse's programming and that Sabretooth would be a very dangerous villain with the support of Apocalypse, Logan fought and defeated his nemesis. As a result, his skeleton again was laced with Adamantium. Under the control of Apocalypse, Wolverine fought the X-Men ferociously in his Death persona. But with the help of his teammates, he eventually broke free from Apocalypse's control.

While on the Weapon Plus satellite, Logan was able to access detailed files on his past. However, it was a trap, and only Jean's manifestation of the Phoenix was able to save them. Wolverine greatly mourns Jean's loss, was not pleased with Cyclops and Emma Frost's relationship, but has remained a valued member of the X-Men, serving on as many missions as he can while also doing solo operations.

Wolverine was ambushed by the Hand and Hydra. Transformed into a killing machine and outfitted with several devices, he battled various other heroes and killed both Hornet and Northstar. S.H.I.E.L.D. was eventually able to deprogram Logan, and he was sent to oppose Northstar, who also had been resurrected by Hydra. While on a mission in the Savage Land, he met the recently reformed Avengers and eventually accepted membership. Recently, Wolverine unnerved many high level officials, including those of S.H.I.E.L.D., by his sporadic movements in and out of the grid, with the tensions mounting in what seemed to be Wolverine's attempted assassination of the prime minister of Japan. Eventually it was revealed that Wolverine's true target was not the prime minister, but his bodyguard, the Silver Samurai. During an interrogation that began during their battle, and ended shortly after Logan severed the samurai's arm, Wolverine received some more information that led him back to Department H. Despite what he had originally thought, it was not the carelessness of his captors that allowed him to escape; rather, the Winter Soldier seemingly interfered with the operation in such a way that allowed Logan's escape. Wolverine tracked down the Winter Soldier in Serbia for information, but was rendered unconscious after a struggle after which the Winter Soldier revealed that he had earlier murdered Logan's pregnant wife.

Powers & Abilities

Wolverine is a mutant who possesses the ability to regenerate damaged or destroyed areas of his cellular structure at a rate far greater than that of an ordinary human. The speed at which this healing factor works varies in direct proportion with the severity of the damage Wolverine suffers. For example, he can fully recover from an ordinary gunshot wound in a non-vital area of his body within minutes, but it took him almost two months to fully recover from injuries sustained in a duel with Lord Shingen, which included one from a sword that went all the way through his trunk.

Wolverine's natural healing also affords him virtual immunity to poisons and most drugs, as well as an enhanced resistance to diseases. For example, it is nearly impossible for him to become intoxicated from drinking alcohol. He also has a limited immunity to the fatigue poisons generated by bodily activity, and hence he has greater endurance than an ordinary human. His agility and reflexes are similarly enhanced.

In addition, Wolverine's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process. Although over a century old, Wolverine is as healthy and physically fit as a man in his prime.

Wolverine also possesses superhumanly acute senses, making him capable of seeing things at a maximum distance greater than a normal human's. His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, and he is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if that person or object is hidden. Wolverine can use these enhanced senses to track any creature with an impressive degree of success.

Wolverine'skeleton includes six retractable one-foot long bone claws, three in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of his forearms. Wolverine can, at will, release these slightly curved claws through his skin beneath the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but the blood loss is quickly halted by his healing factor. Wolverine can unsheathe any number of his claws at once, although he must keep his wrists straight at the moment his claws shoot from his forearms into his hands. When unsheathed, the claws are fully within his hands, and thus Wolverine can still bend his wrists. The claws are naturally sharp and tougher than that of normal human bone structure, allowing Wolverine to cut through most types of flesh and natural materials.

Despite the extent of his healing factor, Wolverine is not immortal. If the injuries are extensive enough, especially if they result in the loss of vital organs, large amounts of blood, and/or loss of physical form, such as having flesh burned away by fire or acid, Wolverine can die.

History

Sean Cassidy was born as the heir to the castle and estate of Cassidy Keep, Ireland, as well as a small fortune. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, with the degree of Bachelor of Science, Cassidy became a detective at Interpol, the international law enforcement organization. By the time he married Maeve Rourke, Cassidy had risen to the rank of Inspector at Interpol. Although Cassidy had discovered his mutant powers in his adolescence, he kept them secret, even from the rest of Interpol.

However, Cassidy's powers were known to his disreputable cousin Black Tom Cassidy, who had discovered that he himself was a superhumanly powerful mutant. Sean and Black Tom had long been rivals, especially over the love of Maeve Rourke, before she ultimately married Sean.
Sean Cassidy was assigned by Interpol to a top secret mission which required that he stay out of touch with his family for a considerable amount of time. When he left on the mission, Maeve was in her first month of pregnancy, although neither Tom nor Maeve knew it at the time. Their daughter, Theresa, was born during Sean's absence. Maeve took the infant Theresa with her on a visit to her relatives in Armagh in Northern Ireland. While she was there, Maeve, an innocent bystander, was killed by an explosion caused by terrorists. No trace of Theresa was found by the authorities, and they and Maeve's relatives assumed that Theresa had also been killed in the explosion. In fact, however, Black Tom Cassidy had been present at the scene of the explosion and had secretly carried Theresa off with him. Black Tom suspected that Theresa might develop superhuman mutant powers as she grew older, and therefore he intended to raise her secretly so that he might exploit her powers himself.

On returning from his mission, Sean Cassidy was informed that his wife was dead. Those who knew that Theresa had been born decided not to inform Sean Cassidy that Maeve had had a daughter in order to spare him further grief. At first Cassidy attempted to escape his despair over this news by throwing himself into his work at Interpol. Eventually, however, the still melancholy Cassidy left Interpol to become a freelance operative, and as time went on, he found himself engaged in criminal activities. The legal authorities never discovered that Cassidy was guilty of crimes, but the mutant known as the Changeling did, thanks to the technology of the subversive organization of superhumanly powerful mutants and their underlings known as Factor Three. The Changeling contacted Cassidy, whom Factor Three's technology had also identified as a superhumanly powerful mutant, and invited him to join the organization. Cassidy was appalled upon learning of Factor Three's goals and adamantly refused. However, the Changeling and his superior, the so-called Mutant Master, agreed that Cassidy's powers and knowledge of the workings of law enforcement agencies were too valuable for Factor Three to lose, and so they sent their agents to capture Cassidy. Factor Three had a headband containing explosives placed around Cassidy's head. If Cassidy defied their orders, the headband could be detonated by remote control; it would also detonate if Cassidy attempted to remove the headband himself. Furthermore, Factor Three put Cassidy, who went by the code name of Banshee, under the supervision of one of their trusted human agents, the Ogre. The Banshee thus felt forced to obey Factor Three's commands, and, accompanied by the Ogre, performed various criminal missions for the organization.

While in New York City on a mission for Factor Three, the Banshee clashed with the original X-Men, who captured both him and the Ogre. The X-Men's leader, Professor Charles Xavier, used a psionic 'mental bolt' on the Banshee's headband which prevented the detonation mechanism from functioning so that the Banshee could remove it. Once freed of the headband, the Banshee told the X-Men all that he knew about Factor Three. Later, the Banshee discovered Factor Three's secret European headquarters, only to be recaptured. But the Banshee participated in the X-Men's battle with the Mutant Master, and it was the Banshee's powers which exposed the Mutant Master as an extraterrestrial.

Banshee's superhumanly powerful lungs, throat and vocal cords could produce a sonic scream for various effects, in concert with limited, reflexive psionic powers which directed his sonic vibrations. He could hover or fly at the speed of sound, and could carry at least one passenger. He could overwhelm listeners with deafening noise, stun them with tight-focus low-frequency sonic blasts (effective even against shielded ears by penetrating the skull via bone conduction), plunge them into a hypnotic trance, disorient them, nauseate them, or simply render them unconscious. Using sonic waves, he could rapidly vibrate himself or other masses at will. He could generate sonic blasts which struck with tremendous concussive force, liquefying or outright disintegrating targets at his highest levels of power. By radiating sound waves outward and reading the feedback, he could locate and analyze unseen objects in a sonar-like fashion. By modulating his scream's harmonics, he could confuse most scanning equipment. He could instinctively analyze, replicate, and block sonic waves or vibrations from other sources.

Banshee generated a psionic field which protected him from the detrimental effects of his sonic vibrations, though his sonic powers could still injure him when pushed beyond safe limits. His physiology seemed fully vulnerable to conventional injury when his sonic powers were not engaged. Banshee had selective hearing, enabling him to focus upon, enhance, or totally block out any given sound in his environment; this shielded him from the deafening sound of his own screams, and made him a superhumanly acute eavesdropper in surveillance situations. Sean and his cousin Black Tom were immune to each other's natural mutant energy powers, though Sean's immunity did not extend to the new powers Tom later developed via artificial mutations.
