Simply a software..or a voice synthesizer..or however u spell it.. o3o Uhm..I'm not very good at explaining things.

The best way I can describe them is singing computer programs. Then they get more complicated because each program be a diffrent singer and fan Vocaloids made by changing the pitch of the programs singer. The program that makes the 3D dancees is called MikuMiku Dance or MMD and can be downloaded for free where as the singing programs must be bought. The first two Vocaloid released were english speeking but the newest and most popular are japanese speekig.

Ok ok so i have to admit i did a bit of "research" on what Vocaloid is xD. *still a teensy bit confused but gets the picture*

So technically, all those characters are like "products" [or so Wikipedia calls them], right?

And is Miku Hatsune like the most popular out of all of them? I see her everywhere...
