No, no, no. It was all wrong. Strange Land huffed to himself, twitching a tail in annoyance. He was standing on some relatively firm ground, pacing gingerly, and telling snatches of story to no audience but the still water and his songbird. There were so many stories to tell, such strange places to speak of, and the only thing stopping him was a crippling fear of failure. The only remedy he could think of was to practice, and practice, until he could tell his stories automatically. So he paced, occasionally lowering his voice to a suspenseful whisper, occasionally singing, and Echo remained silent, except to accompany his songs. He was utterly absorbed in his rehearsing, trusting Echo to keep watch for danger.

Exploring the deepest bowels of the earth, echoing empty chambers rent in the living rock, Double-Stripe wandered silently. Or she had, until very recently; her eternal meanderings among the strange formations and eerie fungus had only just been interrupted by strange echoes of a voice; familiar in its language, but not is specific tones, and the words are garbled by the indefinable distance they must travel to reach the doe's ears. Slowly at first and with plodding foot, then quickly and flowing like water, she climbs and climbs to the surface, the voice growing clearer and clearer all the time -
Stirring from a strange dream, Double-Stripe shook her head to dispel the lingering images and sounds. The sights of deep-earth caverns left her eyes, but the voice she had heard was persistent. It changed occasionally from bold spoken rhythms to soft whispers to lilting verse and back again, round and round, indecisive. Peering down from her small nest on the roots of a Mangrove, Double-Stripe saw that the voice she had heard was not, in fact, part of her dream, but a real Kimeti, a very bright blue and yellow buck singing stories with a songbird. Unaware that he wished for privacy, she giggled at his strangeness, stretching her neck and legs and beginning to stand. She thought to introduce herself to this buck who had invaded her dreams.

Strange Land was working out a song about a great flood of water, testing different rhymes and melodies to pick one that fit. "The pouring r-r--" The giggle made him stutter, startled, and Echo flitted up to investigate, swooping around Double-Stripe's head, then going back down to where his partner was standing.
Nothing to be afraid of, then, but no matter how he craned his neck, he couldn't quite see what it was.
Then a doe, as brightly colored as he was, came into view, and he blinked slowly. "Ah, have I disturbed your rest? Many apologies."

The antics of the bird brought another giggle. How sweet he was to keep an eye out for his friend!
Peering down from her perch, Double-Stripe responded to the buck's surprisingly formal politeness, "Oh, no! I have slept quite long enough, I think." She began hopping down, root to root, and was soon on land again. "It was a fun way to wake up. You sound very interesting in a cave."

The buck and the songbird matched, if only in how very bright they were. "Why, thank you. A cave?" He glanced up at where she'd come from -- on top of a mangrove root, not deep underground. "Do you walk in caves?"
The far-off places, above, below, and beyond what was usually seen, always interested him. Perhaps he could make a song from it.

"I was just now, in a dream. I haven't really found many caves around here," she thought aloud as she walked closer, "though there are at least two within a day's walk." She suddenly turned a critical eye on the strange buck, sizing him up. "It gets very dark not far in. Are you brave enough? I do not know your character..." She paused, considering, then spoke with a much lighter tone. "Come to think of it, I do not know you at all! What's your name?"

Such an odd doe -- though odd very seldom meant bad. He circled her curiously. As she sized him up, he raised one brow ridge, amused. "My name is Strange Land. Curiosity may compensate for pure bravery, I think, and I would very much like to see these caves."

As he circled, she spun, more out of curiosity and playfulness than wariness or caution. She laughed - "The stranger stays Strange, I suppose!" Stifling her good humor, she completed the exchange - "I'm Double-Stripe... Your curiosity should serve you well, Strange Land. Caves can be very curious places." She spun about suddenly and bounded a few lengths away. Turning back, she said, "We had best start off, the morning's wasting. We might have some light left when we get there if we leave now!"

He tilted his head in acknowledgment, blue eyes twinkling with humor. Her cheerfulness was contagious. "Well met, Double-Stripe." When she bounded, he hesitated, thinking she would be off, but her words clarified perfectly. "Let's be off, then."
He could follow at a good pace, and he'd walked often and long enough that he wouldn't tire quickly. "How did you find these caves?"

Setting an easy but brisk pace, Double-Stripe led the way. She talked amiably with her new companion. "I've spent a lot of my time exploring," she opened. "I settled down in this area not too recently, really, and keep a pretty big piece of it. I decided the best way to keep it mine was to know it from boughs to roots," gesturing appropriately with a nod of her head. "The caves are a part of my territory."

Strange Land listened with interest, recording it in some corner of his mind. "How fascinating. I had no idea that there were caves in some portions of the swamp." He flicked an ear, looking up at the trees. "Do you climb, as well?" All his life, the restless itch in his bones had pushed him to wander in search of new worlds. He'd never imagined that some might be under his very nose.

"There aren't a lot of caves in the swamp. Other than the two I mentioned, the nearest is a couple weeks' hard walk." Stripe laughed again when Strange Land asked about climbing. She laughed very frequently, it seemed, light, airy and infectious. "Not much! Climbing is difficult business. The best I've done really is that nest in the Mangrove you found me in. The good, thick branches are too high up, usually."

Strange Land liked her laughter. It called to mind a brief fragment of song -- "Laughing wind and singing water," he mused under his breath, keeping one ear cocked to listen. Then, louder, he added, "Echo travels up into the branches sometimes, but what he finds there, he will not tell me." The songbird, perhaps hearing his name, came swooping out from behind a trunk to hitch a ride on Strange Land's shoulder.
"How did you find these caves?" he asked, keeping alongside her.

She tilted her head thoughtfully. "Just kind of stumbled on 'em - literally, once. I fell into it. Had to find an entrance at ground level." With a swish of her tail, she added, "That's the one we're going to now, actually! If the hole's still there, there'll be some light in that chamber. You'll be able to get a good look at the rock-stumps."

"That sounds like quite an adventure." He smiled, the black-on-white of his face markings shifting in merriment. "What is it like in the caves?" Most of his songs were full of description of places he'd seen or imagined. Perhaps he would find another by visiting this cave, with Double-Stripe as his guide.
