It was impossible to tell; Nettle had gone so horrendously off-topic at this point that it had turned into more rant than stern lecture, the sharp edge to his voice flattening the poor youngster's ears and making his head go down.

"...was young we didn't pull that kind of stunt. I mean, really, just because someone issues a perceived insult doesn't mean..." And on and on; Red's eyes kept twitching to the side like he was planning on retreat, but every time he took a single step, Nettle eased in to block his path. It was remarkable. It seemed unintentional.

"...and kept their homes tidy!"

The dark kimeti had slowly and quietly made his way toward the sound of a ranting kimeti at a cornered coat. His steps were light, unintentionally hiding his pretense from the first warning: sound. He was behind the grey kimeti who was exceptionally lighter than himself and much more noisy. He stood there listening for a moment, casually looking over the other buck from behind and then to the coat who seemed, without literal use of the word, stuck.

His head tilted, his chipped ear scratching against his abnormal and broken horns, as his soft voice erupted behind the grey buck. "I may ponder," he begun. If the kimeti had anything else to say, it was gone now, whisked away with the light breeze as his bright eyes fixed on the two in front of him.

Red's eyes may have shifted from Nettle, slowly, onto the newcomer -- more interesting to look at, anyway, equally intimidating but in a much more fascinating sort of way. Stargarden intimidated because he was so unusual, and for a troublemaker like Red that was someone to be followed. And hassled. And imitated...

"...just leaving thing--" The words changed in Nettle's throat, halfway swallowed, going from 'lecture' to 'undignified yelp' in a matter of seconds. As his head whipped around to study the interloper, Red leaped up and, in a practiced sort of way, bounded off into the swamp. He knew when to beat it.

Stargarden curiously pondered on the grey buck's sudden change in demeanor but that only lasted for a few seconds before his eyes shone on the colt to watch him bound off and flee.

And then they were alone...

"So you are not--" once again he forgot to finish his sentence. This time, however, it was merely interrupted with the realization, "--your friend just left you." He casually rubbed his leg against his other, scratching against it for relief, his small tail flicking at something behind him.

Nettle's head went back around almost fast enough to get whiplash, just catching sight of the red-and-orange tailtip as Red hopped around a corner and behind a tree, disappearing entirely. He made a softly grumpy noise but most certainly didn't give chase. Too much effort. He'd see the colt around again [or one who looked similar to him; he had a hard time telling the youngsters apart] and corner him for a lecture.

"Never learn." Grumpy, with a little shiver to settle raised fur, to put himself all at rights again. He looked sideways, out of the corner of his eye, to Stargarden again.

Stargarden chucked to himself, thinking that this kimeti in front of him was going to rip his head off with all the twisting it did. That'd be an interesting sight, wouldn't it? Although, no one would believe him when he'd tell them that he's spun his head right off his neck, not after the incident with the crocodile, right? They'd automatically assume he'd tried to put this grey kimeti's head into a crocodile's jaw...

"It is going to come off at this rate," he said, not clarifying just what it was. His eyes stared at the other kimeti, unwavering. He noticed the other kimeti eying him, barely from the corner of his eye so he tilted his head the other way before stepping a few feet towards the grey kimeti. Face to face. Almost nose to nose, Stargarden didn't even notice as he stared at him.

"You should make chase." He murmured softly at him.

Maybe Nettle gave. Just a little -- a sideways prance, two quick steps to the left and then one back to the right. Prickly, perhaps a little annoyed, he frowned across at Stargarden. "Not likely!"

But his eyes strayed after the colt, narrowed and thoughtful, considering. After a moment he shook his head, giving it up. "He got the idea, anyway. Well, no, he didn't, they never do, but he will."

The buck pondered on the idea that this creature did not care if its friend ran away from him, maybe he seemed to miss the idea entirely that Nettle had been lecturing him and not just having a friendly conversation. Maybe just a little. Idling, in consideration, Stargarden took a step forward and then left -- matching that of the grey buck.

"--seems tense," he half way thought out loud.

Curiosity maybe?

"--what did he do," he said while half in thought, "--you hate him so."

"Hate him?" Another startled moment -- and then finally, finally, Nettle came back into himself. Shoulders squared his head tipped to the side and chin raised so that he looked down his nose at Stargarden [gaze lingering], Nettle made a sharp snort of sound, disagreeing.

"If I hated him, I wouldn't waste my time." His tone was shifting again into that comfortable edge of lecture, no longer dancing back and forth. Nettle in his element. "I wouldn't spend my breath trying to save him from his own mistakes and teach him the way the world works and how to fit comfortably within..."

He had more. Oh, he had more. Stargarden needed to stop him before he really got going again.

Stargarden nodded at the other buck, his gaze finally jolting from Nettle slightly right and then back. His ears twitched lightly at the sound of him, or maybe something else, as Nettle begun to talk in the same way that first drew his attention. He figured this other buck enjoyed the sound of his voice much more than himself. Thoughtful for a moment and then he took a step forward to stand just aside from Nettle, near to his ear and just looking past him.

"Then you," he begun, "do not hate me."

"Well -- " A pause. Stargarden had successfully managed something that no one else really good -- rendering Nettle thoroughly speechless. He just got a wide sort of blink, a perplexed shift of brow, another of those skitterish steps to the side with hoof scraping against the ground, and Nettle...shrugged.

"...I don't know you yet."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:04 pm

Stargarden watched him, intentionally taking in his actions. They did not appear all that strange to him but they were actually quite the sight to witness. There was no way you could hate someone you didn't know, so there was the winning situation for him and then it hit him. Yet. Yet. Yet. Yet?! Ah ha.

"Yet?" He finally managed to say out loud. "You are interested," he questioned, although it didn't seem like one. He paused. And waited for a moment as he seemed to ponder on this thought.

"Then my name," he thought for a moment. What was it? Oh yes. "A garden of stars," he thought out loud, "Stargarden -- and you."

The ending was awkward in its phrase, he was asking him his name, but it seemed like it was a statement as well. Stargarden and Nettle.

His phrasing was awkward but -- well, Nettle's whole posture was awkward, and that was so much worse. He cleared his throat, made an awkward sort of noise, eyes narrowed suspiciously. Not many people really took an interest in Nettle, and when they did, it generally meant trouble. Trouble of the 'leaving unpleasant presents on his front stoop' type.

"...Nettle." Appropriate. And he could, at least, remember what his name was. He tipped his head just a little, still watching Stargarden narrowly.

Stargarden nodded his head, sincerely interested in what was coming out of Nettle's mouth as he watched the other kimeti's, inapparently awkward to Stargarden, movements. He caught Nettle's eyes watching him rather narrowly and he blinked those star-shining eyes in confusion or maybe consideration.

"Sounds delicious," he took a gander, "is pleasure to meet you, grey kimeti with a name to match now."

Delicious? Once again Stargarden was rewarded with silence, a wide sort of blink, Nettle's ears flattening just a little as he tried to figure out what the hell that meant. Eating something that would sting the inside of your mouth, your lips, all the way down your throat...? Well, Stargarden was certainly daring, if nothing else.

"...ah. Yes. That."
