Completely at ease in the grey of the early morning, Whispering Mist was in his element. Aside from the occasional croak of a bullfrog, followed shortly by a soft splash, the marsh was almost peculiarly silent. Even his foxbun was still asleep, a soft, fluffy mass curled between his shoulder blades.

He was more solitary than most of his kind--he'd been alone since birth, and until he'd stumbled across the grey-and-white foxbun, he'd never actively sought out the company of another (truthfully, he'd not even really sought out to adopt the pet...the foxbun had simply decided that he was a perfect sleeping perch, and Mist had found himself unwilling to bring himself to object).

But, as he had reached adulthood, he'd begun to wonder just what he was missing. There was a sultry sort of temptation to the marshlands themselves--he found it easy to while away the hours just listening, at one with the ins and outs of his own little section of swamp...but lately he'd begun to question if there wasn't something vital that he was missing in his own private absorption.

Stopping for a moment, the water settled easily around his hooves, barely dampening his fetlocks as he rubbed his pearly-white horn against a nearby vine-covered tree trunk. With a small, satisfied grunt, Mist raised his head a moment later. As he did so, Smoke (he'd named his foxbun Screaming Smoke, since the little creature seemed to see no problem with chittering quite loudly when he wished for the kimeti's attention) made a soft noise, roused from his slumber.

Bracing his small paws against the hard, scaley knobs that decorated the kimeti's back, the foxbun seemed content to stay put, and avoid getting his own feet wet. Chuckling, Mist shook his head, continuing on his way. His hooves made a soft squelching noise in the sticky mud, and he adroitly avoided the deeper, more ominous pools that could easily hide a lurking crocodile.

Marshlight stood still as a treetrunk beside a pool of water, watching the sandy bottom with intent concentration. He had awoken hungry; today he chose to forgo an easy bland meal of leaves for the challenge of catching a fish. Little moved in the bare dawn light. The nocturnal creatures had settled, the diurnal only beginning to stir.

Half-buried in the sand, False Dawn waited with equal patience. The watersnake knew that his companion would share fish. If False Dawn couldn't catch a fish himself, he could scare it towards Marshlight, and the clever kimeti would likely succeed at the catch.

The morning quiet was beginning to come alive with birdcalls, chatter and creaking and chirps, as the sun crept slowly up towards the horizon. Marshlight flicked an absently respectful ear towards the dawn. Soon the day would warm. He intended to have a full belly by full daylight.

Hesitating, one golden hoof held steady in mid-air, Whispering Mist caught a glimpse of the other kimeti, his pale coat standing out starkly against the dark, shadowed surface of the water. The sudden halt was, in fact, enough to cause Smoke to bump up against the back of his neck, prompting a displeased grunt from the bi-colored creature.

However, taking note of Mist's still posture, after giving an agitated n** to the kimeti's ear, Smoke contented himself with peering in the direction of the other's gaze, ears cocked forward curiously.

Watching the ghostly-white Kimeti as he stared down into the pool, Mist waited patiently for the other to finish, not one to rush, or abruptly disturb another. He did, however, make his way a bit closer, hooves now near-silent in the squishy marsh, as he took care to step only on patches where there were clumps of grass, giving the muddy earth less chance to squelch loudly, curious as to just what the other was up to. Was he caught up in thought, or actually peering into the water with a task in mind?

Abruptly, there was a flurry of motion. False Dawn surged up from his place on the bottom; a panicky fish leaped up from the surface of the water, and with a swift, carefully-timed lunge, Marshlight snapped the fish up, feeling the satisfying crunch of its fragile bones. He backed up onto the slightly higher ground of a tussock of grass and dropped the dying fish between his forehooves.

False Dawn wriggled up out of the water to join Marshlight. "Good boy," the kimeti told his pet softly, and bent his neck to bump his nose against the pale snake's head. The fish, while not huge, was large enough that feeding False Dawn would not deprive Marshlight of any significant portion of his own meal.

Blinking, Mist had to admit, even if only to himself, that the pair's teamwork was...impressive. As he watched the pair dig in, his own stomach knotted uncomfortably, a reminder that he'd yet to seek out his own repast this morning.

And yet he continued waiting patiently, keeping what he considered a polite distance from the pair.

Screaming Smoke, on the other hand, had no qualms about making their presence known. Nose twitching, the foxbun burst into action, scrabbling easily down Mist's foreleg, before darting off toward the watersnake and kimeti, chittering all the while. He didn't stop until he was only a few feet away from them, settling back onto his haunches and looking back at Mist expectantly, as if to ask what was taking him so long.

Gold eyes lighting up slightly with ire, after shooting a veiled glare at the foxbun, Mist cleared his throat, bobbing his head briefly in greeting at the other pair, not quite sure what he should say.

After a moment's hesitation, he spoke, his voice low. "Hello. I apologize if we're intruding...I'm Whispering Mist, and my loud companion is Screaming Smoke." tilting his head ever-so-slightly to the side, Mist waited to see how the other two would react.

Marshlight's head snapped up at the chittering intrusion, and he studied the foxbun with sharp-edged amusement. He looked up at Mist, staring a moment longer than was polite; then he answered, "Marshlight, and False Dawn. I see your ball of fur is hungry." His ears twitched up in a smile. The minor rudeness had been less a product of offense than of a solitary nature; Marshlight didn't often see other kimeti.

False Dawn reared up and drew his head back, hissing. But at his master's more laid-back reaction to the intrusion, the watersnake relaxed and went back to pulling bits from the bitten fish.

Mist chuckled, inclining his head. "It's a pleaure. And that one is always hungry." he said with a wry smile, shaking his head slightly in the foxbun's direction. Not quite sure what to say (this was the first time he'd -spoken- to another kimeti, and he had no idea what to say beyond the basic greeting), Whispering Mist stood still, and a semi-awkward silence fell, broken only by Smoke's snuffling in the dead fish's direction.

Paying absolutely no attention to the kimeti that so kindly carted him around, most of the time, Smoke crept closer to the feeding pair, the action almost unconscious as his nose quivered, the scent of the fresh fish teasing at his nostrils.

"I suppose we can catch another," Marshlight said after a moment, unconcerned, and backed up a step. "Dawn, don't bite," he instructed his pet fondly. "He may eat if he likes."

The snake eyed the foxbun and hissed uncertainly; but his master's tone was calm and affectionate, and therefore everything must be Okay.

Whispering Mist blinked, grateful for the other's generosity--at the very least, it would ensure that Smoke would be less likely to be scratching insistently at him. Slowly, he grinned, inclining his head politely once again. "He's going to get spoiled, with offers like that." he observed, humor lightening the words, although his voice remained softly pitched, barely distinguishable over the usual marsh noises.

Smoke, who had been observing Marshlight's posture carefully as he'd approached, scurried forward when the kimeti made room for him to draw closer. He hesitated briefly at the hissing snake, before creeping forward to pick daintily at the other side of the fish, eyes not leaving Dawn for more than a few seconds at a time, as if he remained uncertain as to just how tolerant the scaly creature would be willing to be.

Shaking his head, Mist turned his gaze from Smoke once again, eyeing Marshlight with interest. After letting silence lapse for a moment, then two, he had a thought. "Do you two often come here to fish?" He himself didn't have regular places he visited, at least not for food, and so was curious as to whether that was unusual, or the norm.

"That is what one does with pets, yes?" Marshlight inquired, his ears coming forward to angle towards Whispering Mist and hear him more easily. He looked down at False Dawn fondly. He cherished the snake and took great care to keep his pet happy. "He has been with me some time," he added, unasked.

Dawn watched Smoke intently, but offered him no challenge. As long as the foxbun remained on the other side of the fish, he was all right with this arrangement.

"It's a good fishing place," Marshlight answered Mist. "We fish here when we are around here. We are not always in this area." He ducked his head to scratch an itch on his cheek against his shoulder. "I haven't seen you here," he observed.
