This review will contain Minor spoilers about Gameplay, and Names. Names will be shown, but the actual storyline spoilers will not be in this reviewThe StoryAs far as the actual story is concerned. You are Nico Bellic, A West European who just arrived in Liberty City. Your Cousin, Roman, E-mailed you about him being a rich civilian in the streets of Liberty City, but you find out, of course, that he is a liar, and you are forced to start at the bottom of the food Chain. The Opening presents itself in a much better fashon than the previous GTA games, Grabbing the roots of gangs and how they start. However, you are in no gang, you are Nico Bellic, an Army of One.
PresentationGrand Theft Auto is not suitable for Children, Granted, but the road you take through the eyes Of Nico is totally under your control. You can do missions to progress through the storyline, Go totally postal and kill everyone you see on site, beat up a bunch of innocent Bums that roam the streets, Go on dates, or do a couple of things for fun like Bowling, Pool, and so on. You are in control on what happens, you can do anything, and go anywhere at the very beginning of the game, all the way to the end.
The Storyline makes it to where now you are more attached to your character. You want him to win, and succeed, as well as your friends around you.
GameplayAs mentioned in the Demonstration, you are free to do anything. Which does not actually change much from the Previous GTA games. But thanks to the new Emotion Engine that supports it. Everything has physics, Including the people. Run over a guy, he reacts how a person who is run over should. Shoot a guy in the arm, he will drop his weapon. His Leg? He will fall over, try to get up, and limp depending on how bad his condition is. The AI has been fine tuned, so pedestrians react to things alot better than the previous games. Making the user experience alot more enjoyable than the previous installments.
On the previous installments, gamers were left with a sour taste from the targeting system. That all has been redone, and made alot more confortable. But the newest system is sure to shock people: The Covering System. Somewhat similar to "Gears of War", players can react to anything on their surroundings.
Thanks to the Physics engine, the player seems more realistic when walking, or running. But Driving is alot more realistic now than it was before. Taking a turn on a minivan is not as easy as it was before. So users are sure to take things slow unless in an emergency, in which case, there is sure to be accidents. This is sure to be a "Turn Off" for now, but it makes it alot more comfortable, and of course more enjoyable to the player.
GraphicsYes, the graphics have been improved. Drastically. Some reviews has state that objects in a room almost look Photo Realistic, but to me that is not the case. Sure objects inside a home can be pushed over, in turn can shed a shadow from lights inside the building and all, but nothing like they put it. It has improved, but I would not call this the BEST looking game on the market.
OverallI am a pretty big Grand Theft Auto fan. You can tell by all the posters in my room and such. So granted, I had to pick up this game. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely, I have played for 20 hours so far and I have not even completed 30% of the game itself. Plus with Online Involved, there is unlimited replay value. Jump online with 10+ Buddies and you will NEVER know what happens next. Rockstar did not just have a Free Roaming option available to the players, there are over 13 gameplay types Online. Including, of course, Rocket Arena.
ProblemsThe Only Beef I have with this game is that it takes alot to getting used to the new Driving physics. At first its extremely hard to make sharp turns unlike the previous games, but now I understand that it is for the best for the user experience. Veteran players will see this, and get used to it.
PS3? Or Xbox360?Allow me to put this as simple as I can. I have played both the PS3 version, and the Xbox version. Both are very similar in terms of graphics, gameplay, and so on. Xbox has a slight higher percentage in what is known as "Pop In", but this does not kill the game in any form or fashion. The way the PS3 version solved this, is the 3.4GB Installation required to play. Everything else is similar. And if there was, I obviously did not see it.
So he is how im going to put this: Whatever console you own, buy it for that console. If you own Both, then choose which one is right for you: If you do not want future DLC for GTA4, Free Online, and a slightly less pop-in: Buy the PS3 version. If you want DLC and no installation: Buy the 360 version. It does not make that much of a difference. And it does not kill the gameplay what so ever.
