Something had been eating away at her insides for a few days, and eventhough she had managed to keep it hidden from her mate, it was getting harder and harder.

Her sister Nurisha was missing. She was known to be a daydreamer and wanderer, but this didn't feel right. Had it been too long? Was it just a sixth sense? Was she alright?

It was beginning to bother the rest of the family too, but Ihlo felt burdened by it. She felt like she was somehow a horrible sister for letting Nuri wander off. And it showed. She looked tired, she looked paler than usual, a sort of sickly pale. By the river where she'd first met Njozi, she curled up in the roots of a tree for a brief moment of rest.

The pale, adult male came trotting slowly along the river bed, his head high and a little hum on his maw. As usual, he was making the rounds that he would never be able to avoid, but he actually seemed to be quite happy despite the duty this morning. He'd been having a good few days, all the better for the fact that he was finally with the one he loved. Asking her to be his mate hadn't been half as hard as he had imagined it to be and now that he had, the pair of them were as happy as they could be. However, living in two separate dens was something that mates didn't do, and Njozi had finally found a place that he felt was suitable for them to live in together. That was why he was out here, looking for her, to tell her!

"Ihlo," he exclaimed with a grin as he spotted her at a distance, his pace quickening as he got to the tree. With his head in the clouds as it was, and the excitement in his thoughts, he didn't even notice her melancholy appearance at first. "I found the perfect place to make a den, do you want to go-" around this time, his eyes had finally started to actually see her and the problems written all over her face and posture. His ears drooped, and a frown immediately creased his maw.

"Are you ok, love?" he asked quietly, moving closer and nosing her maw with his own. He sat slowly, worried eyes glancing her over once. He didn't like to see her this way.

Ihlo was startled as her mate greeted her, and she felt shameful that it actually took a few moments to realise who she was talking to. She managed to smile for him, and it was an honest smile. She was thoroughly glad to see his face, those handsome features, that reassuring size and strength that he just exuded.

She got up slowly and practically flopped back down again onto Njozi, falling into his form and sighing heavily. Her mind tried to process the two very different things he had said, and wondered which to react to first.

"I'm...worried about my sister. I think she's missing," the words struggled to form.

Njozi didn't mind that she flopped onto him, considering the difference in their sizes now. He was a large lion, and she was still just as small and beautiful as she had ever been. Delicate, like an angel, at least in the eyes of such a big lion. Instead of groaning at her weight on him, he simply adjusted until he had her cuddled up against him, leaning his head against hers as he shifted a paw across her back. He would be her support whenever she needed it - and right now, it seemed like she needed him more than ever.

"Oh," he said finally, his brows furrowed and a frown etched across his mug. He would have been in a fit if one of his little brothers or sister had gone missing, and no doubt that was why she looked so distressed. "Do you know where she went?" he asked finally, shifting his ruby-toned eyes up to look at her as best he could. She must have been suffering terribly over this. Of course, to think of a little girl out there all by herself wasn't very comforting either.

She kept closing her eyes and falling into a brief moment of sleep nestled against her mate, feeling totally cut off from the world. Nothing mattered for a few moments. It was just him and her.

"I don't know...she has a friend she sometimes visits...at the other end of the lands...I think," she began, sighing and lamenting being woken from her little piece of peace. "Something doesn't feel right...she does wander but she's normally back by now."

Njozi didn't mind that Ihlo kept falling asleep, though the restless manner in which it was happening did seem to worry him quite a bit. If she had been able to stay asleep, perhaps he would have left her, but he felt as if she were too worked up to rest for very long. The worry creased his brow as he stared at her beautiful face, watching her semi-peaceful slumber.

He listened to her words as she spoke, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper until a 'v' had formed between his eyes. His tail thumped lightly against the ground as his mind whirled in thought. He hadn't seen the girl, or heard anything about her. She must have gone rather unnoticed when she left. With a soft sigh, he glanced back up at her, "do you want to see if we can go find her?"

Ihlo didn't reply straight away, her head resting against Njozi's strong form. She wasn't asleep though. She was very much awake, trying to weigh up what to do. If they went to look for, what were the chances of finding her? And what if they somehow missed paths or something? And what if she returned whilst they were looking for her? Or, does she just sit here and get ill with worry?

She knew she could trust Njozi to lead her anywhere and then lead her back safely. That was never an issue in her mind.

"Yes, I want to know she's safe."

“Alright then,” he said with a weak smile on his maw. He knew that there was a million things that could happen, a million reasons why they might never find the little girl – but at least they wouldn’t be sitting here idly. Going out and doing something was better than sitting around and hoping against hope that everything turned out to be alright. Actively looking for her would always lead to a better chance of finding her, no matter which way they looked at it. Goddess help them, but they would need luck on their side today.

“Where was the last time anyone saw her?” he asked quietly, beginning to stir. He was ready to leave, to get up and start this journey. He had no idea how long it would take them and getting as quick a start as possible might help them in the end. He knew it was worrying Ihlo, he could tell by everything about her. The quicker they found the little girl, the sooner she would be safe and the sooner Ihlo could stop being so worried about it. It distressed him to see his mate in such a manner.

Ihlo felt like such a burden, asking her knight to help with a family matter. But it meant more to her inside than anyone else would know. If she was like this with her sisters...how would she be with her own children one day? If she could find her sister, and make things right with war inside her, then maybe she had a hope of being a good mother.

Ihlo got up almost faster than Njozi did, despite her weak mental and physical state. She was running on pure determination and willpower. She started to walk in the direction of the place Nuri played about most, before his question even got processed in her tired mind.

"This way, there's a place she likes to play with her friend across the lands, that'll be the best place to start."

Njozi didn’t see Ihlo as any form of a burden. In fact, he felt as if it was his place to be doing this. He was her mate and that made this little girl part of the family to him. As much as Ihlo was a part of his family now, he was also a part of hers, and he had always held the belief that family came first. He would have done anything to help his sisters, especially little Tapanga who would inevitably need more help than the other two. If this little girl needed him, he would try his hardest to treat her the same way he would treat little Tappy.

“Alright, then we’ll go that way,” he said, although she was already walking that way. He took a few quick strides to catch up to her, a little smile on his face as he tried to seem reassuring. “Don’t worry, love, we’ll find her no matter what.”

Ihlo cast him a sincere smile, and although not wanting to stop for a second for fear she'd topple over in sleepiness, she sort of leaned into him as they walked to show how much he meant to her. It was so important for him to know that her heart belonged to him, and that should the chance arise, she would do the same for his family too.

---

The sun had blazed across the sky all day, and Ihlo's search was so far fruitless. It was a very warm day, and although both their belts were light, it was still so easy to get hot and bothered. It was very fortunate that their path took them in and out of shade frequently, a godsend on their search. They'd reached the vague area that Ihlo knew was Nuri's playground sometimes, and her disappointment at not seeing her sister there was evident on her face.

"Uuhhh, I should have known it wasn't THAT easy..."

Njozi looked around slowly once they reached the area that Ihlo had said her sister often frequented. His eyes narrowed on the horizon, turning in place to examine the lands that lay out around them. A soft sigh rippled from his mug, though he turned his attention back upon Ihlo with the best smile he could muster. “We won’t give up here, Ihlo, we’ll keep on looking,” he said reassuringly, moving over to give her cheek a gentle lick. His tail wavered behind him as he took another glance out towards the area around them.

“Maybe she just went a little farther than she usually does? Cubs do that when they’re getting older, you know,” he shrugged lightly, although he was really just trying to cheer Ihlo up. “If this is where she goes usually, then she probably came in this direction. We’ll keep on going until we find her.” He nodded, offering her another weak, reassuring smile. He really did want to find the little girl – it was his job to protect pride members, after all, and she was a part of the pride.

Ihlo sighed and smiled for him. She'd manage anything for him. It seemed as though his determination to help her, to help her sister, renewed her own willpower and she pressed on, forcing already aching muscles to carry on.

"I know we'll find her. And she'll be alright. I know she will. I almost wish I had a way to see her though, to know exactly where she is," she began, talking whimsically of what some lions might call the Sight.

He knew the smile that Ihlo wore was only for him, and he could still see the distress that ate at her eyes and ruined the light that her smiles usually radiated. He frowned, chewing at the inside of his cheek as he tried to puzzle out a way to make this situation better. Wasn't there a way he could just make it all go away for her? It would have been nice. He was helpless to do anything, really, and it was the first time he was ever in this situation. It was frustrating to say the least.

"If I knew anyone that could do that," he muttered, moving over to nuzzle her softly, his eyes shutting as he tried to give her some form of comfort, "then I would find them in a heartbeat."

"I know you would," she smiled for him, and she meant it. As tired as she was, she always wanted to be strong for her knight. Ihlo took a breath, forced a steely expression on her maw and ploughed on, relying on Njozi beside her to guide her away from the wrong turns and mis-steps of these outskirts, of which she'd never seen before.

Tree, grass, river, rocks, birds. They passed more and more until...

Nestled atop a sun-baked boulder was a bleached-looking Nurisha. Ihlo nearly burst with relief, and just charged right over to her sister. She lay asleep, peacefully. Ihlo almost wanted to wake her up to give her a verbal bashing, to tell her how much she was missed and how she had been so worried for her sister. To ask where she'd been, what she'd done. Everything and nothing popped into Ihlo's mind, making her even more tired.

She remembered herself and looked over to Njozi, asking him to come over.
