Going to see the Gynecologist.. Don't know what to expect

I am have refered my my GP to see a gynecologist soon due to my periods, I'm really quite nervous and I don't know what to expect at all. I only know it's for an 'internal examination'... and I have no idea what they have to do for that. So if anyone has visited the gynecologist or know what sort of things they do to test you please can you tell me to put my mind at ease.
